Yuri Talk: Comedy Lesbians

It has been a while since I personally brought up a Yuri Talk topic of discussion (Mainly I have been sharing interesting topics by other yuri fans). In this edition we will be taking a look at various comedic lesbian archetypes in animated/drawn/digital Japanese media. What I mean is not “lesbians to be laughed at” but “lesbians who are fun to watch”.

Note: Most of the archetypes discussed in the post can be found in the Yuru Yuri series but I will be referencing other delightful lesbians and ambiguously gay ladies out there who (usually) provide laughter to viewers.

Yuru Yuri Slumber Party

Let us begin with the most common comedy lesbian out there:

THE PERVERT, aka the naughty girl.

Sanae and her beloved Ika

Sanae cuddling with the Squid of Destiny.

There are several kinds of naughty girls who all have in common how openly they want to eat as many varieties of tacos as they can get their hands on.

Kanako Miyamae.jpg

Kanako from Maria Holic. I have not finished the show so I do not know if she falls under the “joke pervert” archetype. I am simple using her as an example…and even if I am wrong I do not care as the only way I will ever finish the Maria Holic anime is if someone LEGIT pays me $60 to do so.

The joke pervert is the thankfully rare nowadays lesbian character whose entire joke is her being gay…and getting humiliated for it. She is repeatedly humiliated despite getting some hope spots here and there with unsatisfying payoffs. Not a fan of this archetype at all.

The default pervert (See Sanae from Ika Musume above as an example) is the default naughty girl who openly expresses her lust for female flesh to an extreme for the girls she has her eyes on. More often than not her advances are met with beat downs but not because of her preference but how uncontrollably hungry and persistent she is. Most people around the extreme pervert know she means no harm but can get annoyed by her rambunctiousness.

Camera Girl at her best

Camera Girl from Girl Friend (beta).

Yuu's love power

Yuu from Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san.

Akechi Smile

Akechi from A Centaur’s Life.

The controlled pervert is similar to the extreme pervert but with more self-control. Like the extreme pervert they openly express their lust for delicious Cocoa Puffs but show enough self-restraint to not “pounce” on their “prey”.

Katsuragi and Asuka.jpg

Katsuragi from Senran Kagura

The warrior pervert varies. Some are able to show restraint while others are in default mode. The difference here is these perverts are skilled in combat. Fortunately they fight to defend the cuties they so dearly love to fawn over or “play” with in the name of naughty justice. If the warrior pervert is an anti-heroine however…no girl is safe despite their ultimately noble goal.

THE GENTLE LESBIAN

Hazuki fantasizing about Shizuka

Hazuki from Märchen Mädchen.

Mimi's yurirific mind

Mimi from Fate/Kalied liner Prisma Illya

Hotaru Ichijou

Hotaru “The Champ” from Non Non Biyori

The gentle lesbian is usually soft spoken or timid. Sometimes they are born gay or “see the light” at some point in the story. Their brand of humor often revolves around their “yurrific” imagination in how badly they want to caress the girl/girls whose nectar they so desperately wish to drink but for a long time are too scared to approach their beloved. Sometimes the gentle ones apply techniques more common with the pervert archetype but this is rare due to their purity/innocence/naivete. Sometimes the gentle lesbian does not have many fantasies but shows a growing desire to be with the one who loves them so.

Kan-U wants Ryuubi's melon

Kan-U from Ikkitousen.

A rare type of gentle lesbian is the gentle warrior. Similar the warrior pervert they use their combat skills to defend their friends and beloved but are much calmer. Yet like the default gentle lesbian their mind is a treasure trove of craving for the girl she loves.

THE TSUNDERE

Ayaya wants a Yoko hug

The Ayaya from Kiniro Mosaic.

Inoue being scared again

Inoue from Re-Kan.

Natsume rubbing her cold hands on Ren's back

Ren from Konohana Kitan.

The tsundere is another common comedy lesbian but not as frequent as the pervert. Like other tsundere the yuri variety hide their true feelings behind a wall of meanness or disrespect toward their loved one when in reality their desire for lily flavored ice cream is equal to that of perverts. The funny is obviously the lust behind the wall…and them having to deal with the obstacle that is an often oblivious love interest (sometimes not so much).

THE SUAVO

Mizuki inviting Yuko on a date

Mizuki from Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic.

Eiko's smugness

Eiko from Slow Start.

Ren wanting to feed Hibiki

Ren from Anne-Happy.

The Suavo is a girl who has an Iono-Sama prodigy, meaning she was born with the gift to sweep girls (and sometimes women) off their feet with their irresistible charm or charisma. The humor is seeing how effortlessly they turn girls on, be mesmerized by their presence or faint after one sentence. The opposite is a suavo whose charms are ineffective. One thing both effective and ineffective suavos usually have in common is that their power is useless against the ONE GIRL/WOMAN they dream of spending the rest of their lives together with.

Class S media parodies/gags. These are usually  gags or parodies of the “onee-sama dynamic” in old-school themed yuri media such as Maria-Sama ga Miteru, Strawberry Panic, old yuri manga and other Class S media.

THE ONEE-CHAN, aka the big sister.

Mocha's ready for action pose

Mocha from Is the Order a Rabbit?

Shion happy to cook for Hana

Cousin Shion from Slow Start

The Onee-chan is a big sister like character who possesses a suavo’s magnetic charm and a controlled pervert’s self-restraint. She can woo any girl she wants but more often than not shows a deep desire to be in a romantic relationship with her younger sibling, even if they are blood relatives.

THE OJOU-SAMA, aka the rich girl.

Glorious Yayoi

Yayoi from Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic

Urara and the twins

Urara from Hidan no Aria AA.

Ojou-sama can possess any of the other comedy lesbian archetypes’ traits but the main difference is her prim and proper etiquette/mannerisms. Sometimes they are rich, other times they are simply well-behaved. She oozes with pride and politeness yet deep down develops or already possesses and insatiable craving for peasant meat. The humor lies in how she loses her cool whenever her beloved is nearby or when she thinks of her. Of course the combat equivalent is the Warrior Princess.

THE GENKI, aka the super cheerful girl.

Papika

Papika from Flip Flappers.

lulu yurigasaki

Lulu from Yuri Kuma Arashi.

Princess Lion

Lion from Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic.

Tama in a nudist pageant

Tama from Slow Start.

The genki is a ball of uncontrollable ball of happiness and wants to share her joy with everyone around her, especially the girl she likes. Some genki have a naughty side but most of are pure angels who wish nothing but glee for all. Laughs and chuckles are provided automatically…provided the viewer does not loathe genki characters.

THE CHEESE COUPLE

Forever

Mao and Hitomi from Two Car.

The Cheese Couple from what I can gather is a parody of Utena, more specifically a “Prince” and “Princess” duo who are so over the top with how they show their affections for each other that those around them are overwhelmed by their passion…but not in a good way. Think about a corny love poem. Now think about two people expressing their love like they were reciting poems to one another. That is the humor behind a Cheese Couple.

The Yuri Fan

Yosano turned on

Yosano from Go! Go! 575.

Yosano's yuri vision

One of Yosano’s fantasies.

The Yuri Fan (Blend S has a yuri fan boy. The humor is the same.) is a girl who, of course, is a huge fan of lesbian media, leading to her either talking about it with great passion and detail or primarily having romantic fantasies about two friends of hers who seem very close, leading to the fan having either a nosebleed or throbbing profusely.

THE PERFECT LESBIAN

Top Hat Togo

Mimori Togo from Yuki Yuna wa Yuusha de Aru

Quizmaster Dia 2

Dia Kurosawa from Love Live! Sunshine!!

Eruna's ultimate goal

Eruna Ichinomiya from Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku.

An extremely rare lesbian who does not fall under a single category. She possesses every single trait: She is horny, has self-control, is prim and proper, is skilled in combat, is full of energy, can be timid at times, is full of charisma, can be cheesy at times, is a natural born chick magnet, has onee-chan qualities to her and so much more.

The one thing about most (excluding MH) of these characters is, as I said before, they are not evil or to be ridiculed. Instead they want to make audiences laugh not at their expense but how funny they are trying hard to find love with their significant other(s). I am certain there are other comedy lesbian archetypes I forgot to mention but I think these are the more recognizable ones in Japanese media. It is also important to keep in mind that the comedy does not end up being perceived as insulting so it is not as simple as making the lesbian funny. She must also be written as a likable character. It is crucial to get her likability down, otherwise she will be perceived as annoying, which is not what the writer or yuri fans wants…at all.

So down below in the comments feel free to talk about your favorite archetype, character representing said archetype, moment, whatever else you feel like bringing up about comedy lesbians.

I have S1 of Yuru Yuri sitting around in some folder waiting to be watched, but I still haven’t gotten around to it. Does look really fun though.

This is a good breakdown of different lesbians in anime though. Thanks for putting it together!

  2. Ah, Mizuki. You may recall back to Hina Logi’s episodics of my opinion of her, and it hasn’t changed. Best. Girl.

Ren from Anne Happy is one of those exceptions to the Suavo rule of being ignored/ineffective against their beloved, I guess…if anything, it’s the other way around for her, and gradually (subtly) it begins to be mutual…

Mimi, the one who spoke the “words of truth”.

Pervert lesbians are generally the ones that end up annoying me after a while if they don’t get better at it…controlled perverts like Akechi are much easier, though.

But sometimes I start a show liking a character, and they are, or occasionally, maybe, turn into (can’t remember of any examples where a character turns into one though), a joke pervert during the course of a show, and then…well…yeah. Cthuko from Nyaruko-san (almost made it through the entire show now, only a bit left!) and Railgun’s Kuroko would be examples of such. Just..eh. They could be nice characters if handled differently, but then over the course of the show, the same kind of joke just gets re-used over and over again to the point it’s just not funny anymore. Also, start to feel bad for them for being eternally both handled badly so they never get the chance to actually get closer to their loved one, and for other such things…eh.

Other perverts than the joke pervert are indeed far better…even then, I’m not sure I like them as much as other types, but far more tolerable.

Aaah, Tsunderes. Tsunderes are generally good. As long as they mostly just get embarrassed about their true feelings, and not overly violent towards their loved one. That one is a bad line to cross.

With the amount of moments they have together, while not in the focus of the show, Kaleid Liner’s versions of Rin and Luvia could probably be classified as Tsundere and Ojou-sama on this list…they were influenced by their gay kouhais, and in that universe, are they themselves. Clearly. Not that Rin is exactly straight in other parts of Fate, though…

Sonoko from YuYuYu could probably also count as a Perfect Lesbian, considering she’s The Yuri Fan, The Ojou-sama and The Genki, with possibly a bit of the Pervert and the Gentle Lesbian hiding underneath the surface. Probably could become a Suavo with a little bit of effort, too. Also some of the other things you mentioned for The Perfect Lesbian can or do count for her, so…

Kuroko is not handled badly…her love life is. That’s the only issue with her character. She’s very capable, honest, always ready to help people in need, works herself to the bone for others, and will put her life on the line for others. She’s also very aware of things around her, and takes other’s feelings into consideration. her one flaw in that area is that she pushes Mikoto so hard to get rid of her “childishness”. But other than that, she’s very astute. I can’t get into manga spoilers, but just trust me on this. Even the various anime show this to an extent. But the one thing about her that is a problem is that she is foreveralone because she’s in love with a girl who won’t return her affections no matter what. She has her pervertedness, but she also has more than shown that she’s serious about it, and it isn’t just hormones speaking.

I really wish the author would finally give her a break…

Cthuko is a memory I don’t want to keep…season 1 was great, season 2 everything went down “terrible harem” hill…

      • Pretty much, yeah. Kuroko’s great when she gets her moments to shine and gets the spotlight…just often (in the animated parts so far especially) she just gets shown more with the “overly excited pervert” who gets punished for it “comedically” far too often. I’m well aware she’s a great character…the writers of the show just don’t use her for her better sides often enough, basically.

I have actually spoiled myself about some things in the not-yet-animated manga stuff, though I haven’t read the manga myself, and yeah, I do sorta know what you’re talking about…

Though I’ve also heard things (mostly just a specific thing) about future parts of the manga/LN’s, and based on what I’ve heard, the reason Misaka is so into “that one that shall not be named lest I punch someone”/completely oblivious to Kuroko is because of “that one’s” BS powers, which are even more BS than I initially thought…basically “that one’s” “powers” apparently mean that no one else around “that one” has a chance at a successful love life, and is the reason half of people become attracted to “that one”…ugh. I’ll stop talking about that series now, before I get annoyed.

Also, yeah…if only the anime had just stopped at S1…1 more episode of S2 + the OVA after it left…and just ugh. The only good thing about S2 really is Cthuko’s own ED song. If only she had had more actual “victories” with Nyaruko than that single cake/food scene in S1…/sigh.

Basically the exactly problem with both of them is not in the characters themselves, but rather in how the authors choose to portray them, and not give them real chances to get really closer to real respective loves…just give them their happiness, dammit!

(Even though, to be honest, due to the anime and Kuroko’s treatment in it, I stopped shipping Misaka x Kuroko a long while ago, already…)

if she were only after Mikoto’s body, that’d work, but she’s in love with more than just Mikoto’s body. Much more than that.

I think she could work with some characters, but the author refuses to let her have a break.

Tamao from Strawberry Panic is the funniest pervert, from the first second episode where she tricks Nagisa into giving her measurements for a dress fitting before blatantly ordering a standard sized one in front of her tosneaking up on her to scare just so she can record her screams for her listening lease, she’s so damn funny as well, Idunno’ if anyone remembers the Umbrella episode? Hilarious.

Perverts should be paired with a partner that enjoys the receiving end, not groping half the cast while ignoring the sexy blonde student council president at their side… Grr…

The Tsundere can be hit or miss with me, probably leaning towards miss.

The Suavo, done right, can definitely get to me and make me wish my name was in her daily planner.

The Onee-chan and Ojou-sama don’t particularly stand out to me.

The Cheese Couple… I can only think of one example at the moment, and it was kinda dull. It probably has some potential though.

I assume any lesbian with an interest in anime/manga/video games is a yuri fan. They’re usually fun.

The Genki are usually winners in my book. Three of the four pictured were quite noticeable to me.

The Gentle Lesbians are the other group of winners for me. They don’t always start out in the spotlight, but often take the top spot by the end.

I’d also like to mention the Tomato. The Tomato is a tomato, and is filled with tasty tomatoy goodness.

I doubt I will ever separate Genki and Monster Rancher in my mind.

  9. Umedyn says:

I love the Yuri “tropes” they are usually fun. I say usually, because we all know (outside of the shoujo-ai and yuri genres) how they are portrayed in the more “mainstream” anime. They are usually the “gay punchline”. This sort of treatment has made me sour a bit on “soft” shoujo-ai, the ones that try and push the envelope and subtext to hell, but always seem to either back off at the last minute, or worse: leave it completely open. I’ve noticed my patience for soft shoujo-ai has grown thin as of late, I’m starting to really dislike the anime and manga series that are too afraid to stick to their guns. It’s a breath of fresh air when we get an anime/manga that is willing to hold no punches when it comes to their leading lady-loving-ladies.
This being said, I don’t blame these tropes, I love each and every one in their own special way, and I know more will come in future ahead!

If I’m remember correctly Kanako from Maria Holic was indeed in joke pervert category. I finished it in the length of 2 years and my memory is foggy. As my favorite lesbian, well I like it when genki lesbian being paired with gentle lesbian. For example at the top of my head Kirari and Anzu (I dunno if Anzu is a gentle lesbian?) I like all kinds of lesbian but those two I like the most. Btw, this is an interesting reading. A lot of other archetype I didn’t know about.

    • OG-Man says:

Anzu does kind of fall under the gentle archetype though I think she exhibited some tsundere tendencies. Let’s go with gentle.

The archtype names aren’t exact, like suavo, but the personalities most definitely.

      • LuzeriP says:

Ah you’re right, Anzu does have a tiny bit of tsundere. It’s just when she’s being sweet to Kirari, I forgot that part of her. Anzu hates working but she loves Kirari very much.

Talking about Cinderella, Rin and Uzuki more becoming a real deal. They flirt a lot in the game. People are so happy about this, including me of course. Rin definitely a gentle lover, yeah?

I have a soft spot for tsunderes, whether they be straight or gay. Peverts can be a fun addition to shows too. I liked the blonde from Keiijo for example. She could kick arse and make opponents uncomfortable with her flirting.

    • OG-Man says:

As long as they don’t go overboard with their meanness then it’s all good.

True that. On the bright side Mio’s perversion wasn’t seen as evil. She loves the ladies and uses her seduction to her advantage in combat.
