Yuri Quickie: RE;Creators

This show is not heavy on yuri. HOWEVER, it is most certainly there.

RE;Creators

Briefly discussing what the show is about…think grounded shows that take a closer look at the behind the scenes of making an anime or game. Think something like SHIROBAKO but with a strong dose of the fantastical. It is the story of one being who somehow gained the power to travel from the “fictional” world to the human world in an effort to wreak havoc with her army of other “fictional” characters to accomplish her ultimate goal. Opposing her is another group of “fictional” characters along with their “Creators” (Animators, mangaka and game developers) and other allies in a battle to save the multi-verse…while also being a show exploring the relationship between creators and their creations. Basically “What would an animator say if they ever got to meet their creation face to face?” A lot…A HECK OF A LOT! Add in a dash of dark themes and hard hitting action spanning several genres from Gothic, fantasy to mecha and magical girl and you have some kick ass fight scenes. I brought up SHIROBAKO because, as my good friend OtakugamergirlT said in her review of the show this is a worthwhile anime to check out if one is interested in becoming a creator (anime/manga/video games/etc.). As I mentioned it deeply explores the relationships between a creator and their creations.

Oh and there is also a chaotic neutral who is pretty much a female Joker (I know DC already had a female Joker in their history).

Mamika X Alicetaria.jpg

The most prominent couple, Mamika X Alicetaria.

As I said above the yuri pairings do not get much time to snuggle but they are most certainly there and when they do get their time it is certainly worth the wait. The one couple that gets the most time is Mamika the Magical Girl and Alicetaria the defending knight of a dying world. Think a cheerful heroine who gets a reality check and a brooding heroine who learns to smile again thanks to the pink upstart. Do keep in mind this show is not all sugar and gumdrops before approaching it…Anyway, besides this pairing there are two more. The second takes a long while before it becomes clear. A hint is dropped once a huge bombshell is dropped. As for the third one…it is subtle to the max. The material for the third is so small it might be seen as a crack ship…but like the other two it is most certainly there. The hint to the pairing I am referring to is “minds“.

Had I finished the show on time it could have ended up on my Top 15 fav anime of 2017 list.

PS: Please do not spoil the identity of the 2nd pairing. It needs to be seen blind. You can share your thoughts on what transpired between the two but not what happened in detail or who they are.

  1. Ah, the series that broke my heart when Mamika’s big event happened. Had a gut feeling what had happened after the cliffhanger, but as I was in the hospital healing from a necessary operation at the time, put the show on hold for like a month before getting back to as I knew I would need tissues and a lot of mental strength to watch the next episode…and I was right.

But they did get their moment later on, if short. I hope they actually make what the poster was marketing, so we can see more of these two.

The other two couples were also good. I think I know which ones you may mean. Pretty sure about the first one, slightly less sure of the other, more subtle one. But Yuri is most certainly present here, and based on these two and the final episode poster, the creators certainly are aware of it too.

Definitely one of my favorite shows of 2017, if one of the ones that ripped my heart out the most, only really losing to YuYuYu S2…

That was an intense scene for sure.

Had to edit the paragraph because I made it look like the 2nd pairing wasn’t as important as Alicetaria X Mamika, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

The hint for the third pairing is “minds”.

Well damn, based on that description of Magical Girl/Knight I’m SOLD. That was beautiful, OG.

Go for it when able dood. Like I said though it’s not all sugar and gumdrops. Also I had to edit the paragraph because I misused the word “prominent” for Alictaria and Mamika. The second pairing is also very important. You’ll find out what I mean when you check out the show.

Tbh, I’ve been eyeing this anime ever since I randomly happened upon its OPs and OST on youtube (composed by the mighty SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]), but put it off after reading into the story (or more precisely, who lives who does not) and realizing that it’s not really my kind of drama. Though now that it has your seal of approval, I might add it to my to-watch(-eventually) list. 🙂

I have the wrong expectation watching it (wishing to have FATE style anime instead of Shirobako one) so for a good 60% of the anime I am disappointed. But, I am sure if you comes in knowing that this anime going to explore Creator’s intention and burden, you’ll be satisfied.

And while Alice x Mamika is the one with more screentime (and 70% of Alice’s motivation is for Mamika), personally my favorite couple is the second one.

There are several other options for third couple, (from most likely to least based on how much they interact: SelesiaxMeteora, MeteoraxKikuchihara, MarinexSuruga), thought because you say ‘they are definitively there’, I am going to assume the two main Creation.

In the end, while I can’t say Re:CREATORS satisfied my itch, because the whole show is driven by yuri, the best episode is the yuri one, there have more than one yuri couple in the end, and that it has good production value, I think this is a show to watch.

Had to remove the spoiler tag because the interested need to go in blind. I edited the paragraph to emphasize that the second pairing is very important. I misused the word “prominent” when I actually meant Alicetaria and Mamika got the most screen time together.

Personally if I wanted FATE I would have watched Apocrypha so this being different was why I liked it more. HOWEVER, I get where you’re coming from that it not being as action focsued and half of it focusing on the exploration of the life and struggles of creators did drop the hype for you.

You almost got the third pair right. The hint is “minds”.

        Okay, I understand.

Though I just want to comment that I believe the episode that focus in second pairing is so good and concise, it can be its own OVA and be seen separately (maybe as anniversary watching or as part OVA only viewing along with the like of Candy Boys and Kuttsukiboshi or to be shown to friend that starved for yuri content).

I just love the second pairing so much.

      • Based on your hints, that “almost right guess” and interaction I remember from when I watched the show in the summer, I’m guessing the third one is Meteora x Kikuchihara.

(The other one I could almost guess is Meteora x Marine.)

My yuri googles must be getting dirty cause I don’t remember seeing anything between Meteora x Kikuchihara, and when OG give me a hint “minds” I still had no idea what he was talking about. And Meteora was my favorite character in this Anime so I don’t think I would forget about it if I saw something.

Well I will make sure to pay more attention to two of them when one day I decide to re-watch this anime.

It’s alright. Again it’s very subtle and not everyone immediately notices the potential between them.

Yes. The 2nd couple’s tale is one that must be shared by as many fans who see this show as possible.

Coming into the show I had expected to see a shounen show revolving around basic boy A saving the world with the female characters falling for him left and right… And boy was I glad to be proven wrong. The second pairing has the most official arts and one of them is even pinned on recreators_tv’s twitter dashboard. Gotta love my puppy couple.

I enjoyed Kakegurui a lot, which placed last in your Top 15. If this series is good enough to crack into your 2017 list I’ll have to check it out.
