Citrus Episode 3: Eye of the Lily Storm

I really think the anime is the best thing that could have happened for this series.

Harumin Smile.jpg

So beautiful.

Happy Yuzu.jpg

Happy Yuzu.

Yuzu, having realized her true feelings for Mei-Tron was in shock. Thankfully our savior’s support helped her get back on track. Having a clearer direction in her head Yuzu marched to Principal Grandpa’s office to have a serious talk…only to find him collapsed. Yuzu did her best to help him to the hospital off-screen. Mei-Tron was informed of the emergency and quickly rushed to the hospital. The nurse told her about some funky blonde and all she did to help the old man. Later that night the two had a talk and it looked like Mei-Tron’s humanity took control for a brief moment. Long conversation short the imouto-bot told her human stepsister to call her by her name so they could start over as true sisters…at least that’s how Yuzu interpreted her words. She happily called Mei-Tron by her human name as requested, prompting a reaction from the robot.

Symbollic stop.jpg

SYMBOLISM!

Been a while since I used this reference.

Yuzu was so overjoyed by the news that when she told Mama about it she realized…”Oh crap. She said ‘sisters’…not lovers”.

Yuzu and Mei have a talk with grandpa.jpg

The next day Yuzu hoped to have the talk she wanted the previous day with Principal Grandpa. Luckily for her Gramps was recovering and that near-death experience showed him he needed to lighten up a bit. You know, that subplot about a really angry person’s blood pressure skyrocketing to the point they either collapse or have a stroke and after recovering they realize life’s too important to be angry all the time. That’s what happened. So he reinstated Yuzu and also told his robot granddaughter to make her own choices. Mei-Tron was like “Supreme Patron. This unit is unable to process the command ‘choices’.” Gramps was like “Meiiii.” and she was like “Affirmative…”

Yuzu wanted to make things right with robo-sis so she pushed her to come back to their place and give Mama a hug. She even helped install an update patch for her kuma software program.

The next day Yuzu hung out with her bestest friend in the whole world gathering extremely valuable data. She asked our savior for more assistance…

…to which she happily obliged.

Back home Mama had a big surprise for the sisters, a double bed. Yuzu took this gift well…

Yuzu in the shower again.jpg

How glad I am to be a naughty boy.

Yuzu tried her hardest to overcome her hunger for fried robo-sis breasts with a sidedish of mecha-steak but it was too strong. She was allured by the sweet scent of Mei-Tron’s metallic pheromones.

Mei senses Yuzu.jpg

Yuzu took the opportunity to ask why Mei-Tron refused to address her by her name to which the robot responded “Female unit I am inclined to share a room with. Do not get the wrong idea. Our social status has not altered. This unit does not acknowledge you as a valuable asset.” and got her futon.

Mei teasing Yuzu again

Mei-Tron “shuts Yuzu up”.

Yuzu asked why she was being so cold to her to which her half metal sibling responded with an unfair tease and further irked her. With a “Stupid heartless piece of junk” remark Yuzu tried going to sleep.

The next day Yuzu and Harumin were punished for their usual dillydallying by cleaning the bathroom. While doing their routine classroom checks Mei-Tron and and her most devoted cybernetic assistant spotted one table messier than others. It was Yuzu’s. Mei-Tron told her lackey that she would handle it. She then found her “research material”.

Harumin fanning herself.jpg

Did I tell everyone that Harumin is best girl yet? I did? Well I’m telling you all again. Harumin is best girl.

After a job well done Yuzu and Harumin were about to celebrate when Yuzu noticed a message under her bag to go meet Mei-Tron. In the office Mei-Tron scolded Yuzu for her research. She used the “s” word again. It was at that moment Yuzu’s hunger consumed her.

Yuzu kissing Mei.jpg

After getting her fill Yuzu told a surprised Mei-Tron that it’s her fault for being such a fine piece of metal and turning her on so very hard in episode 1. It was her fault for awakening these feelings she never knew she could have for a cyborg woman. She apologized for being a terrible onee-chan and ran off leaving the robot perplexed.

Angry Drill.jpg

Angry Drill.

I imagine this is the start of the Drill Arc…Alright then. The anime has given this story a breath of fresh air so let’s see how it’ll handle Drill-Sargeant Pecos’ involvement.

If I can be serious for a minute once again. One of the main reasons this anime has so far been something I feel the series desperately needed is not just how great everything looks in motion…but that it did the impossible: It made Mei…human by simply giving her facial expressions. Hardcore Mei supporters and apologists can freely vouch for her but the fact remains that for the longest time in the manga Mei to me has been a block of wood with a brain. A BLOCK OF WOOD WITH A BRAIN I SAY! I was genuinely surprised to see Mei evoke more than two emotions in the anime, something I couldn’t see in her manga counterpart…AT…ALL! Kudos animators.

I can’t believe the fact I also couldn’t be more surprised when I saw so many different and new expressions on Mei’s face. Goddammit.

Agree 100% with all you’ve said. The justice the anime is doing to the manga is insane. The animators are amazing at capturing the various expressions of all the characters and getting their personalities to shine, but Mei is certainly their best subject. Also, not sure if you noticed, but the opening changed a bit to include two additional characters who’ll be joining the fray soon. =)

As always, I continue to be floored by the anime and can hardly wait for the next ep.

Oh yes. It’s helped tremendously with making the story more appealing. Hopefully that will continue being the case as we go through Drill-Sergeant Pecos’ mini-arc.

I know you’re obssessed with Harumin, and she is a great character..but Mei is my- It’s joke! Yuzu is actually my favorite~ She’s just really likable! Very forward and doesn’t hesitate. I look forward to more of her! And this show! Because it is amazing so far~

They included the ‘scissor’ scene! I was so worried they’d cut that. And even better, they had Yuzu’s heart beats being audible, although strangely in one scene and not in the adorable “Stop beating, Mei might hear you” scene. T_T

Mei’s development has always been subtle in my eyes. It’s there, but if you blink you’ll miss it. I see in the manga where her emotions come through, but I can see how it’s easily missed.

Still laughing at Mei-tron and the robot jokes, though.

Finally starting to understand the Mei side a bit? A “supporter” here, but the manga never relied on the “in your face” approach with her and her feelings as it did with Yuzu. It was more subtle, and yes, might be seen as somewhat wooden/robotic. There is a reason for that though. And if you had read the manga far enough, you’d know.

Mei might actually be more invested in the romance than Yuzu is.

I vaguely remember how she became more robotic as time passed but…no, even after that she’s still a block of wood with a brain to me. Like I said though the anime gets major brownie points for making her more human than the manga ever did.

The moral of the story is don’t bring your incest yuri manga to school. Or any other kind of incest manga, really.

Everyone needs a good research partner in their life. Or an explosion buddy.

  9. Good stuff. Harumin indeed just keeps getting points, and can (and does) do no wrong. While she hasn’t had enough appearances to make me think of her as best girl just yet, she is getting there.

Yuzu both gains points for being pro-active about her relationship and being honest with her feelings + expressing them to others + actually reading Yuri to educate herself, as well as being openly (subtly) gay, but loses some for ignoring consent.

Mei is Mei-Tron. Loses no points, but gains none either yet. As someone who hasn’t read the manga, I guess I can’t compare her facial expressions in that way, but…interesting. Shows that the animators and people working on the anime truly care about the series, if they’re going above and beyond to make it better than the original material/adding details where before they didn’t come across as well.

Asshole grandpa nearly dies to his assholiness and learns to be less of an asshole. Good.

Drill and downgraded eyebrows has her own arc too, huh? I guess I’ll be seeing soon where she falls on my point system/favorites list…

I get the idea that I wouldn’t have liked the manga. Much like Kannazuki no Miko, a talented team has elevated the source material.

The whole “rape is love” dynamic is a non-starter for me. I hope they drop that crutch sooner rather than later. Yuzu reading sister-love manga was a hoot. It feels like Mei just goes along with whatever people tell her to do. She let Trash-sensei grope her because that was what was required. She went all rapey on Yuzu because that was the only way she knew how to affect her behavior. It seems like everyone she knows uses physical affection as a weapon. I hate to see Yuzu moving toward this same behavior. ARE THERE NO THERAPISTS IN THIS WORLD?!?!

Why can’t we have normal, healthy, non-rape Yuri anime? Where is Girl Friends? Kase-san? First Love Sisters?

There are good stories out there.

Do not be ashamed if you cannot continue.

Highly doubt we’re getting an FLS anime after all these years. Best we can hope for is SOMETHING by Milk Morinaga getting animated should this show be successful. As for Kase-san we need to do everything in our power to help the OVA succeed so animators can give a confirmation to a 12-13 episode anime series.

Specifically ones that don’t do hardcore drama.

I dunno if I’d go so far to say “rape is love” is what they’re going for. she was showing Mei what she had done to her. Not in a retaliatory way, but in a way to show her that she was serious and it was no joke. She also did not keep on pushing things. She could have easily just kept on going, but she didn’t. She didn’t last anywhere near as long as what Mei did to her before.

So, I think you’re taking this the wrong way. It’s definitely very aggressive, and an invasion of personal space, but Mei did this to her twice(thrice?) before (and much more aggressively), so it’s not really the same. The story is not glorifying these actions, but rather showing the effect acting like this can have.

They are having a bit of a messy relationship, but they’re teenagers, and Yuzu especially is getting a lot of pent up sexual frustration thanks to what Mei did to her. And they don’t have the “maturity” and experience that is expected from an adult relationship.

I am definitely enjoying the anime overall so far and I agree that the animators are doing an amazing job with Mei’s character. Since in the mange her emotions and development is very subtle, honestly too subtle for the effect that they are going for, its there but its not there enough. Mei seems to resign herself to whatever is expected of her and lives like she has no choice in anything, which makes it seem like being given the freedom to make her own choices is frightening because its like she doesn’t think that she can have what she wants even when given the option to go for it. So then it doesn’t take but one thing to throw her off of making progress and shes right back to putting her walls up instead of letting anyone in and that makes me see her as the more sensitive one of the two. Since while Yuzu is very open and up front about her emotions and desires, Mei on the other hand keeps everything inside until it just vaguely shows only for those, like Yuzu, who can see it; kind of like Kotoura from Kotoura-san if you will.

On a lighter note though I also agree that Harumin is best girl and love her dearly for her constant support of Yuzu and her crazy antics X3 and I’m loving the Mei-tron jokes and such they make the reviews so much fun to read :3

“Yuzu tried her hardest to overcome her hunger for fried robo-sis breasts with a sidedish of mecha-steak but it was too strong.” I’m literally crying here with laughter. You’re having way too much fun writing these reviews.

Yuzu and Harumin doing that “research” was a nice moment.

I feel like I’m enjoying seeing this animated more than reading the manga. Getting to see the facial expressions and those subtle cues from each character isn’t something that can’t be brought across in a drawing like it can when animated and moving. Good stuff.

After 3 I’m enjoying this show a lot and it’s now become something I really look forward to each weekend.

Oh and yeah, Harumin best girl. You’ve convinced me of that, buddy.

Why yes. It’s been more enjoyable narrating the show this way. Plus Mei-Tron’s playing the role of half-robot quite well as we’ve seen so far.

      Exactly.

Gotta say I totally I agree with you about Mei. The anime sure gave her a more “human” personality. Anyway, because of the anime I read again the whole manga, and considering the last 5 issues, you can say that Mei developed quite a lot, having more facial expressions and craving more physical contact with Yuzu, even initiating the contact multiple times, but still, I’m not satisfied. I wish for her to be more vocal about her feelings. Maybe at the end of the manga Mei will finally become a fully functional human.

I have to agree, Mei-tron is way more human on the anime, I a thrilled the art is as gorgeous as in the manga, but in the manga you wait 50 years for Mei to show some emotion, here she’s , I dare not say more human, but less of a brick, I love the whole Mei-robot thing you have going on tho ❤

It’s yet another enjoyable episode. I predicted that the expulsion is not going to stick and I am correct. Thankfully, the grandfather changed his mind and not control every aspect of Mei’s life. Still, it seems that Yuzu have a long way to go until she can get Mei to recognize her feelings. Still, it’s nice to see Yuzu kissing Mei this time.

I have to admit, it’s funny how Harumi tried to imitate things that are in the sister yuri manga, Momoiro Shimai. I guess given that Himeko (the girl with the twin drills) is shown being angry, she will probably start playing a big part next episode.

I figured if Citrus was adapted well It’d easily be my top how for it’s season. But I wasn’t expecting Katana Maidens, it has the potential to be Anime of the Year.

I suppose I’ll check out a dub episode for curiosity’s sake when able.

Katana Maidens has a lot of potential. Whether it successfully taps into said potential remains to be seen.
