Frosty Ramen Episode 1: Girls on a Journey

Here’s another one of those “OG tries discussing more than one show per post”. Let’s see how long this will last. I guess that will depend on how much both shows have to discuss and how long they can keep my interest. First up we will be talking about the premieres of the Antarctica Club show and Miss Koizumi Loves Ramen.

Messy room.jpg

Messy Room.

First up let’s talk about the Antarctica show. We kick things off with the leading lady Mari woken up in an amusing way by her mom. After stumbling out of bed she found an old notebook containing three life goals she wrote. She then had one of those “What have I been doing with my life?” existential crises many teenagers have probably gone through.

Mari’s homie Megumi. Dunno if she’ll be a recurring character once the journey begins.

Later at school Mari told her homie Megumi her wanting to do something exciting. Megumi suggested ditching school and going to Tokyo for the day. Unfortunately Mari’s been afraid of taking risks since she was a child so she didn’t go through with it.

Fateful meeting.jpg

Fateful encounter/meeting.

On her way home Mari had one of those “fateful meetings/encounters” fictional characters have that forever change their lives. In her case it was a beautiful girl dropping a “HUGE WAD OF CASH” on her way home. Luckily for Mari the girl went to the same school so she could look for her the next day.

Mari realizing she found the right girl.jpg

Mari’s “Yup. That’s the right girl.” reaction.

Next day Mari and Megu set out to find the mystery babe. While Megumi was off sniffing around Mari’s “spider senses” tingled when the mystery babe passed by.

Relieved beauty.

There was a scary couple of seconds followed by hilarious relieving.

A Place Further Than the Universe Book.jpg

Book written by Shirase’s mom.

The babe introduced herself as Shirase Kobuchizawa and told Mari she worked every day after school to save enough money so she could go to Antarctica and find her mom who’s last seen there many years ago. Her mom also wrote the book the show is named after.

Waiting for the movie to get subbed. Also looking forward to seeing how this girl joins the team later.

The next day on her way to work Shirase was halted by bullies who mocked her for her goal and threatened to tell teachers about her job money. Mari being nearby made up an excuse to get the bullies off her hair. Afterwards she told her how inspired she was by her devotion to her mission no matter how much everyone she knew discouraged her. She wanted to help any way she could. Shirase told her that if she was serious to join her on the weekend to check out a ship that would take them to Antarctica.

The journey begins.

Mari thought long and hard until finally deciding to take a risk once in her life and join Shirase on her journey to Antarctica.

Good start. The animation kinda reminds me of Wandering Son’s though that was done by a different studio. Anyway the best parts of the show so far are the character facials. Good stuff.

Koizumi after eating a big bowl ramen.jpg

Koizumi-san after eating a big bowl of ramen.

Next up is Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san’s premiere and this one I don’t have as much to talk about. Koizumi is a cutie with a single facial expression when not in “Ramen God Mode”. She has no interest in socializing with others and goes about her business. When she’s in “RGM” though…think Koufuku Graffiti but less erotic.

Yuu gushing over Koizumi-san.jpg

Yuu gushing over Koizumi-san.

Next up we have the deuteragonist Yuu, who likes cute girls and instantly fell for Koizumi-san. She tried repeatedly and failed repeatedly to befriend her but because she’s a protagonist she refuses to give up. At least she hasn’t got punched in the face…yet.

Yuu and Misa.jpg

Yuu and Misa.

Next up is Misa. She enjoys being the center of attention and is annoyed by Koizumi-san hogging her spotlight. I’d like to think that deep down she likes Yuu and is annoyed whenever she gushes over Koizumi-san. We’ll see if I’m right. The green haired girl for the time being is just there so I don’t have much to say about her.

Koizumi-san educating Yuu.jpg

Koizumi-san educating Yuu.

When not gobbling down ramen Koizumi-san pretends to not listen to Yuu…but when she notices her getting a fact wrong…IT’S LECTURE TIME! Being a hardcore ramen eater it’s unsurprising she’s well versed on every single ingredient that goes into making them.

Fun stuff so far. Looking forward to seeing how Yuu’s friends will get dragged into joining Koizumi-san on her ramen escapades, much to her annoyance.

I’d call Koizumi the “Deurtagonist” personally, as it’s pretty clearly being told from Yuu’s perspective.

    Really surprisingly fun first ep~

And Antartica was also very surprisingly enjoyable! Though, not as surprising, as I surmised it would be quite fun before it aired. One of the ones I was more hyped for.

You could be right. It’s like one of those shows where the titular character isn’t the lead but the one who reacts to all their actions like Chiyo from Nozaki-kun. I had a feeling I would enjoy the premiere but it was better than expected.

Yup. Antarctica Show shows a lot of promise. I’m sure it’ll be as good as we hope it is.

A Place Further Than Antarctica had a really strong first episode. I also really enjoyed the visual gags it had – for example, the background when Mari found the million yen. There’s quite a few throughout.

I was expecting Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles to simply be about Koizumi eating ramen, and it certainly delivered on that. I would have been fine with just that, but I’m glad to see that the characters can be pretty amusing as well.

So all in all, a pretty good start for this season.

Both enjoyable first episode. I don’t have anything to say for now except Antartica facial face is so funny. I laughed a lot. And Yuu’s determination to get closer to her crush was amazing. A bit creepy but amazing.
Just for fun, Yuu seiyuu is Kase-san seiyuu. And my Bort.

I enjoyed the reference to Wandering Son! The character designs and use of light is very reminiscent. For me, Farther than the Universe is one of the best opening episodes I’ve seen in a while. I fell instantly in love.

I haven’t decided to pick up the Ramen show… though if the gayometer rises or you push for it pretty hard I might go back. That said, it’s a busy season!

I haven’t seen the ramen anime, but I did see A Place Further than the Universe and I enjoyed it. I feel like I can relate to Mari. I know what it feels like to want to try something new, but being too scared or nervous to actually do it. I’m also curious as to how they’ll get to Antartica. As Megumi stated, you need to be a part of an expedition to go. Would anyone really allow some high school girls on an expedition to Antartica?

“While Megumi was off sniffing around” Quite literally! If anyone noticed, I hope they took it well.

I also ditched school at school a couple times. 😛

No Game No Life poster girl was checking out the bottom of a globe at one point, so I suspect she’d be excited to overhear a conversation about traveling there.

Mari and Shirase are off to a good start in their relationship.

Ramen is clearly a story about a girl in love… with ramen, and the girl who loves her. And the girl who loves the girl who loves the girl who loves ramen. And a girl who hasn’t done much yet.

    Yuu is quite the stalker.

So far it seems Ramen is more blatant about the girls’ feelings, but a Story That Leads to the Antarctica has more depth. We’ll see how things progress.

Just in case I wasn’t clear, that last sentence was specifically about depth of feelings in the relationship, since Mari and Shirase are actually showing mutual attraction, while Yuu is stalking Koizumi. Do we know Koizumi’s first name? Does Yuu?

Although “I want to find out what happened to my mom in Antarctica” does have a little more depth in general than “I like this girl who likes ramen.” Just a tad. Not much.

Hence why I didn’t put sniff in “quotes”.

I too ditched school a couple of times. I think many of us here have.

I don’t ship Shirase and Mari yet. I need more interactions.

That’s a great plot description for the Ramen show so far. We’ll see if Misa truly has romantic feelings for Yuu. Here’s hopin’.

      • Mauron says:

It was quite amusing, so I had to comment on it.

How many of those were at school, in class, like the expert ditcher Mari?

I’m willing to call it something for now, although it could easily lose me at this point.

While she claimed she just wanted to be the center of attention, it felt more like she was focused on Yuu’s attention to me.

I can relate to Mari. I also thought of going off on my own somewhere and yes it was really scary but unlike her I didn’t back out and took a step in to the train…no plans whatsoever. And somehow regretted it because I ended up spending a whole lot on food and so many other things I wouldn’t normally think of buying :P. Anyway…LOL that No Game No Life poster 😀 That Shirase’s challege/invitation to Mari though, their conversation, if you didn’t know what the heck’s going on, you can easily see that scene as they’re lovers and Shirase doesn’t really believe Mari’s feelings for her are serious so she suggested that they elope. Then seeing a picture of big ship going to Antartica where nobody knows you…yup eloping…and seems a good place too if they don’t mind the extreme cold.

It’s a really nice start. I’m excited to see how the others will join their adventure 😛

Koufuku Graffiti was what came to my mind too when I saw Koizumi-san in her RGM lol. And it’s funny how there’s a slow-mo when Koizumi-san’s in her normal self. Misa is totally into Yuu. And I think Yuu should just get her ramen facts wrong all the time so that Koizumi-san would keep talking to her. It’s really good to see Yuu so positive about Koizumi-san’s rejections LOL. Nice start!

We’ll have to wait and see how far that ship goes, if it will even become one. Besides that the show had a pretty good start.

I too hope Misa’s got a crush on Yuu.
