340th G-View: Girls’ Last Tour

This anime is an interesting one because for 90% of its 12 episode it is about the two leading ladies driving around a seemingly empty post-apocalyptic city. Question is whether the two could carry a show all by themselves. Let us find out as we take a look at Girls’ Last Tour.

girls-last-tour.jpg

Alternate Title: Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou (Japanese)

Genres: Adventure, Sci-Fi, Drama, Iyashikei

Theme: Post-Apocalyptic

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: Civilization is dead, but Chito and Yuuri are still alive. So they hop aboard their beloved Kettenkrad motorbike and aimlessly wander the ruins of the world they once knew. Day after hopeless day, they look for their next meal and fuel for their ride. But as long as the two are together, even an existence as bleak as theirs has a ray or two of sunshine in it, whether they’re sucking down their fill of soup or hunting for machine parts to tinker with. For two girls in a world full of nothing, the experiences and feelings the two share give them something to live for.

Chiito and Yuuri

Leading ladies Chito and Yuuri.

So GLT is a show about two girls driving around a seemingly empty city after an apocalyptic war. Let us get right to it. The answer to the above question on whether a show where a majority it follows two characters and nobody else can work is “YES!”. The reason being because to Chito and Yuuri the titular “tour” of the city is an all-new experience for them. The following is a VERY MINOR spoiler but is heavily hinted in the first episode that the two were taken away at a very young age to a bomb shelter for safety. What that means is the girls’ knowledge of what we take for granted nowadays is very limited, leading to, for example, the acquiring of a camera to become something amazing for them as they learn how to use it. The show has the following going for it:

Exploring a new and mysterious world. As the plot summary indicates the girls make the best of their situation. Despite driving through an apparently barren city devoid of any other life but their own there are plenty of secrets and mysteries to uncover in the city. So many questions run through our heroines’ minds like “Why does the city infrastructure look like it does?” “How did the people live?” “What is the meaning behind all these weird looking statues?” “What is up with this facility?” among many others asked throughout their journey. Just because the place is deserted does not mean there is nothing to do there. Far from it.

Profound discussions. Throughout their journey the girls have many deep, profound discussions revolving around topics like existentialism, religion, life and death, historical records, evolution and many more interesting topics. Why? What else was there to do to pass the time.

Rainy melody shelter

This was a great scene.

Adventure. The adventure element of the show lies in the fact that, again, the show is set in city ruins, meaning several edifices are not in the best of shape. Expect our heroines to run into some perils like falling debris and even greater hazards.

To enhance the experience the animation and soundtrack are both beautiful with excellent shots of the girls’ surroundings and sound. The soundtrack compliments the aforementioned combination of melancholy and serenity. The OST is a must have for any anime soundtrack collector. It is THAT GOOD! Same goes for the catchy OP and ED.

Drunk Chito playing with Yuuri

Chito the calm and collected one and Yuuri the goofball.

Chito and Yuuri’s relationship can be best described as a “comedy duo” with Chito being the “straight man” to Yuuri’s goofball nature. Generally Chito is the more book smart of the two while Yuuri is more of a “go with the flow” who on several occasions can rile up her pal. Think of it as two people who intentionally or otherwise know what buttons to push to upset the other. Something like that. Even so the two make an incredible team with Chito’s intelligence and ability to calm Yuuri down when it may look like she is getting out of hand and Yuuri being the more physically capable melon head than her lollipop head sweetie. As far as yuri goes…no question these two were made for each other. None whatsoever.

Overall Girls’ Last Tour surprised me much, MUCH more than I thought it would. After the premiere that some called “boring” I personally saw it as “interesting”. As the show progressed “interesting” became “amazing”. While an iyashikei show in a post-apocalyptic setting is nothing new, the way it was handled in this show certainly felt fresh and something I will not soon forget. Again it is a great combination of melancholy and serenity with many calm and fun scenes along with some heart-pounding and gloomy ones to balance it out. The animation and soundtrack are beautiful, Chito and Yuuri are great leads who do an excellent job carrying the show by themselves and…of course, are destined to wed…as soon as they figure out what eternal vows are I imagine. Keep in mind that this is still an iyashikei show so it is not recommended for the impatient or thrill seekers despite it having occasionally thrilling scenes. For peeps who are pros at Slice of Life shows starring cool ladies this is a no-brainer.

This needs a season two so it can be AOTS again.

I really loved it. Most of it was bittersweet. That ending though, I loved it – Chi-chan’s honesty đŸ™‚
That post-apocalyptic world was really sad but they managed to keep going and just be happy. And that flashback…they know what’s happening and didn’t really make a fuss when they were being sent off by their grandpa T_T Somehow that made me sad but I’m glad they survived the war while travelling. They have the world all for themselves I hope they’ll be able to reach the top level and happily settle down somewhere.

This really was an amazing show and far exceeded my expectations going in. I was hoping it’d be at least a good watch, but it became one of my top of the season! Yuuri and Chito are definitely perfect for each other and I see a happy future ahead for them. A bit grim that they might be the last two humans alive, but like they said, as long as they have each other, it’s ok.

One of the strongest shows of the season in a season with a bunch of really strong shows. It’s sort of tough to recommend just because of the subject matter and genre but at the same time it’s easy to love if you just give it a chance.

I already posted a multi part tweet with my thoughts on this show, but honestly it was amazing. All those people who dropped it claiming it was too boring missed out on a hidden gem here. Wow this is one of these shows that stays with you for a while after it’s over. I personally had such a great time watching it and it was probably getting obvious in recent weeks, but Girls Last Tour is my AOTS by far.

The closest OTHER anime girls this season that I can compare with Chito and Yuuri are Hanamaru and Yoshiko of LL!S!! Hanamaru, like Chito are acting like disciplinarians to Yoshiko and Yuuri respectively. Yuuri and Yoshiko are well known for their wackiness.

It’s sad to imagine their world is going to end. But atleast they’re together living to the fullest. Chito love confession was so cute. And don’t underestimate the power of holding hands.

I recommended it to my mainstream anime lover friends. And theyre all loved it. Its good to change pace once in awhile.

As a soundtrack lover, the music is really good. The song by the rain was beautiful. The harmony was top notch they have a great voice of course. So yeah I wouldn’t mind a second season.

      They’re destined to wed, period.

So you’re a fan of both Yuuri and Aqours’ You. Is that what you’re trying to tell us?

Yup. It was one of the best of the Fall season for sure

AOTS for me, definitely happy about it on very many levels, also my ship of the season, ChiYuu is just great and I love everything about it, not to mention that it’s basically canon by the end, all that great mushy “together forever” stuff made me squeal like a schoolgirl.

The world is absolutely beautiful, despite being a decrepit wasteland void of almost any life excepting the white blobs of death that STILL FUCKING CREEP ME OUT WHY WERE THEY GIVEN SUCH WEIRD ANIMATION AAAAAAAAAAAA

    also late merry jesus day

Anime Strike finally had subtitles for the last episode today. Took them long enough. đŸ˜¦

I was quickly hooked on this series when I first read volume 1, and made sure to get volume 2 when it came out. Then I heard there was an anime, and knew I had to watch.

I think the biggest “flaw” in the anime was the first half was stuff I had already read. The animation definitely improved some scenes, but it didn’t contain the same sense of wonder.

This was another easy contender for best of the season for me, but once again had a lot of competition.

That was quite the excellent ChiYuu moment at the end. When Chi finally opens up fully, she’ll be ready to finish the “and together we are” dance.

I like how your choice of “Chito the calm and collected one” was from the scene where Chi said “Yuu, your face is stretchy.”

And that’s why I don’t read manga of shows that get anime adaptations. At least not until a year or two later.

Chito X Yuu are adorable dorks who were made for each other.

I started the series before I heard of an anime, and usually it’s not as bad. Girls’ Last Tour is just has an extra sense of wow the first time around. I don’t think it could ever work quite as well on a rewatch/reread, while some other shows can benefit.

They most certainly are. Future introduction scene:

Chi, flatly: I’m Chito, she’s Yuuri.
Yuu, energetically: And together we are…
        Both, posing: MARRIED!!!

While this anime quite depressing at times, I enjoyed it’s deep thinking and willingness to ask hard questions that none other dare say. I wonder how many college thesus papers this anime will spawn, delving into its themes and metaphors, unearthing secret meanings noone noticed before…. Okay that’s enough of me being series. I’m going to back to writing silly crossover pieces.

  13. Over the course of the past 3 years, i (pre)ordered the R2J Blu-Ray boxes of only four Anime TV series. And this is the fifth!

Absolutely loved it. I think it was right at that last transition into the final ending song that I knew I had to get that series on disc! Beautiful!!

9/10. Only minus point comes from “too much CGI” for some of the scenes where the Kettenkrad was moving around, and Chito & Yuuri were also rendered in 3D. Should’ve been doable with keyframes, but ok…

I’m a bit afraid of the Manga though. I’d like to buy/read it, but Ann Sears above said that it turns into something very, very sad, and I’m pretty sure I don’t want that…

This is a post-apocalyptic series so it’s not surprising it gets more intense as it progresses. It’s up to you whether you choose to buy and read ahead or wait and hope for a second season. I choose the latter option myself.

Didn’t share your other comment because there’s enough spoilers as is from the above one alone. Let others who want to pick up the manga see for themselves.

This show was fantastic! That’s all.

I thought of something funny. See, I watched this and Kino this season and there is a manga I’ve read called “Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro”. There are two things they have in common; Girls as mains and the fact that they’re traveling somewhere. Therefore, girls make good travelers ;).
