OG’s Winter 2018 Anime Picks

As usual I announce my anime picks one month before the end of the previous season. Also as usual other shows can be included based on fans and Yuri Council members’ reactions. My coverage of shows can change based on how a show is progressing, my life schedule and my mood.

Winter 2018.jpg

Thanks to Dim-Chan for the compilation.

Picks based on the following charts:

Chart 1

Chart 2

MUST WATCH

Citrus: This first pick is an ironic choice because despite being a MUST WATCH I have stated on several occcassions that I consider Citrus an average series at best despite its top tier status among many Yuri Nation members. HOWEVER, I’m hoping the anime version will show me that maybe this is one of those series that is best enjoyed as an anime than a manga. As long as the show makes a profit and encourages more 100% yuri manga getting anime adaptations then I’m good.

Harumi anime

Harumi is all I’ll need to anticipate new episodes.

On a personal bright side, I’ll always have Harumin to look forward to.

Hakumei to Mikochi: A show about little people in the forest. My beloved is one of the lead seiyu and that’s good enough for me to give this my undivided attention…also it’s not a het-harem.

Mitsuboshi Colors: I saw the manga on Dynasty several times but never bothered reading it because I had a feeling it may get adapted into an anime someday. Lo and behold, that day has come. Anyway it looks like a solid Girls Club show.

Märchen Mädchen: This one looks like another Girls Magic Academy show like LWA and Mahou Tsukai PreCure and I enjoyed those. I’m very curious to see where this one is going. Heard from Dim-chan that it’s worth keeping a close eye on. We shall see. I noticed a dark skinned hottie among the cast so that has me really excited.

Toji no Miko: Samurai miko/priestesses/shrine maidens. Nuff said.

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san: Ramen themed Girls Club show. I’m sold. Will most likely be a “shorts” show but still interested.

Yuru Camp: An unofficial spinoff to Yama no Susume. That’s all I need. This will please us as we wait for the highly anticipated third season of YnS.

Slow Start: Most likely will become the #1 Girls Club show of the season. If not then it’s still another GC show to look forward to.

Bonus Additions

Takunomi. Cast.jpeg

Takunomi.: I have a feeling this will be a “shorts” show. Even so this is the “drinking” anime I was actually excited for. Don’t get me wrong. Fall 2017’s Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara is a pretty good “drinking” show but Takunomi.’s the one I got hyped for.

Uchuu Yorimo Poster

Uchuu Yorimo Tooi Basho: Girls Club about them going to the South Pole.

Nanatsu no Bitoku.jpg

Nanatsu no Bitoku/Seven Holy Virtues: This was announced recently as of the date of this post. This is technically the sequel to sin: Nanatsu no Taizai/Seven Mortal Sins. and the leading lady seems to be Lucifer’s ex Michael (The one in red). Reading the plot summary in Chart 2 made me ask myself “Wait…Are they going to do what I think they are with…? Really?” If so then it sounds very interesting indeed. Also here’s hoping Lucifer and her harem will make cameos here and there.

Hugtto! PreCure: Another year, another Pretty Cure. Will the yuri power level in this entry be reasonably high too? We’ll have to wait and see.

CURIOSITIES

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-Hen. I remember seeing the show back in the day. Of the couple of shows airing on Cartoon Network LA that started with a Portuguese dub but eventually got a Spanish dub, guess which one never got a Spanish dub. Still, I have a decent memory of who everyone is and the feuds Sakura had during her quest to collect the Clow Cards…twice if I’m not mistaken. Anyway I MIGHT talk about an episode centered around “The Living Legend” if it’s worth discussing. Otherwise I’ll be casually watching this one.

Gakuen Babysitters: Reminds of Hanamaru Kindergarten and I LOVED that one. Should be an interesting show to check out when I feel like it.

Pop Team Epic: A show that’s hyped as being the pinnacle of modern day “WTF!?” goodness. I’m intrigued to see how “WTF!?” the show is/can get.

There you have it. My Winter 2018 picks.

Many unknowns with streaming licenses, sadly. That Yuri Camp show caught my eye, less so after I reread the title.

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san will feature Rin, right?

I’m all for more Cardcaptor Sakura, but probably won’t watch the new anime until I finish the original anime, just in case they build off that.

Hope for the best with shows you want to watch.

      I dunno.

Too swamped with other stuff to marathon the first series again myself.

I read the full CCS manga, but the anime added a lot of new content, and I haven’t finished that. Both that and Angelic Layer benefited from being longer – things were too short originally, but some of the new content wasn’t quite as good.

As tends to be the case, we’re looking forward to the same shows. My most anticipated shows here are probably Märchen Mädchen and Hakumei to Mikochi. Can’t forget about the next generation of PreCure, either – the franchise will be celebrating its 15th anniversary next year.
I’ll also be checking out Fate/Extra: Last Encore and Pop Team Epic.

  6. Nick says:

Was reading Citrus for a while but as with all the other ongoing manga, I stopped and have yet to start back up. So much drama in that manga, still excited to see it get an anime though. It’s on my list for sure. Another show I have my eye on is Märchen Mädchen as Kantoku did the original character designs for it, so hopefully that turns out better than that little sister show this season. Literally only checked it out because his name was attached to it.

As for other non-yuri shows I’m looking forward to, Voilet Evergarden is at the very top of the list. The PV for that was absolutely breathtaking and it’s hard to believe they actually are making a show that looks amazing. I just hope the actual story and such is good. I’d hate it to be all style and no substance.

Dagashi Kashi S2 is another I’m looking forward to, terrible new character designs aside. I’ll be reviewing it over on Anime Corps too.

There are a couple others I’m looking forward too but as I’m typing this on my phone I don’t have a bunch of pages open with all my charts and such. Anyways, should be a good season, yuri shows and other ones too.

You mean Imocho? The girls are hot…and that’s it. You’re doing good watching Blend S instead. Girls there are hot too and it’s less lame. Anyway Marchen looks and sounds pretty good.

It’s a het KyoAni show so I imagine it’ll at the very least be decent.

Let out your despair over the color and character design changes as soon as possible and then hope S2’s good as you watch it.

Look back on the chart as the Winter season approaches and see if you find other interesting shows.

Obviously Citrus is a must as far as yuri goes, but your other listings seems interesting, so I’ll probably check them out. Gaukken Babysitters was a cute manga, so I think the anime will be pretty good too. I never got super far in the manga, so I guess we’ll see where it goes. As for other shows, I’m with Nick on Violet Evergarden. It looks stunning and will probably be my favorite of the season beside Citrus. I think there are other shows too, but those two are the top anticipated ones atm.

I’m looking forward to Citrus… It could either be one of the best Yuri anime of all time, or the worst… And it all hinges on one condition… How long will they drag out the teacher story, will it be over in the first episode like it should be, or will they keep it in just to keep the non Yuri audience watching.

  9. Personally, most looking forward to seeing Citrus (haven’t read the manga myself), Violet Evergarden (as others, mostly due to it looking amazing and wanting to see what kind of story it is), and, maybe my most awaited/hyped show of the season, Fate/Extra: Last Encore. (not year, past or present, due to Nanoha movie 3 Reflection and Detonation maybe, maybe coming out next summer…maybe? Subs for Reflection, please, somebody…*desperate need to see NanoFate increases)

My favorite part of the Fate multiverse as a game (sorry Prillya!, you’re a close #2 right now!), though I do know they’re not following the storyline of Extra, but more like the backstory of Extella as Nasu told us happened, thus won’t be quite as great, and, at least starting with the male Hakuno and Nero (unless they actually do pull something and make female Hakuno, who does also appear in the story, into the main character instead (and make either Nero or Tamamo her servant! Yuri is justice!)…this is Shaft’s animation work and Akiyuki Shinbou is involved after all, so it is theoretically possible, though I am doubtful they would, because Nasu is evil to Yuri couples despite them being possiblities in the Extra/Extella and Grand Order parts of Fate, and won’t give us the female Fate Master we deserve, with all the Yuri that comes with it, despite having both Last Encore and the Grand Order OVA as opportunities to do such…/sigh (Kinoko pls, just give us one gay Master!)

But I will also likely at least take a look at the other ones you mentioned here and see if they catch my interest, at least. Except for Seven Holy Virtues…you may recall my opinions on Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai (or complete lack of my presence on anything talking about the series), so…definitely skipping that one.

Again I hope Evergarden pleases everyone hyped for it.

Unless it’s the Illya show I am in no hurry to watch other Fate shows. Haven’t bought Extella yet. Someday.

My comment seems to be too little too late. Everybody is talking about Citrus right now! After having fun watching Love Live! Sunshine!! S2, at least there’s a legit Yuri anime next to it waiting for us this coming January. I can’t wait!

Not too interested in Virtues since Maria isn’t in it (her being cute and sexy was the sole reason I continued showing). The plot wasn’t that good and the characters were pretty bland.

On the other hand I can’t wait for Citrus. This is the most hyped I’ve been for a yuri anime in a long time. I love Yuzu and Harumin.

lol OG may your love for Aoi Yuki never end

Ah Citrus 🙂 Actually I to enjoy the manga and I have yet to see if it’s also enjoyable as an anime so I’m really looking forward to this one ever since it was announced and the most out of all my “To watch” for winter. Next to that is Toji no Miko, Märchen Mädchen and Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san 😀 I have a feeling I’ll get hungry with Ramen Daisuki just like with Koufuku Graffiti especially since I like ramen too but not the extent that I’d eat one everyday of course 😛 And girls magic academy? Count me in! 😀 In your bonus additions, I’m actually most excited for Nanatsu no Bitoku 😛

Well, all of them are already in my list too so all I have to do now is wait 😀

    My “Must Watch”:
Hakumei to Mikochi – Read some of hte manga, seems promising
Ito Junji – Must get Horror Fix
Mitsuboshi Colors – The Manga is amazing, very much looking forward to it being animated and the adorably amusing adventures of the trio~
Marchen Madchen – Would rather have 9999 personally, but that’ only because I actaully read that one. but still, Yuri LN!!
Overlord 2 – Apprehensive as always of a season 2 of a show that’s not explicitly yuri, but it was a very enjoyable season 1, so very much looking forward to this!
Slow Start – I follow the creator on Pixiv, and what I’ve seen from them makes me VERY hyped for it
Toji no Miko – Looks very intriguing!
Yuru Camp – Cute girls, camping, bliss~
Kaijuu girls 2 – First season was enjoyable, second should be too
Saiki S2 – First season was absolutely hilarious, so I look forward to more!

Will watch but not as sure I’ll love:
Citrus – Everyone talkinga bout the huge amounts of drama is a bit offputting, but I’m sure I’ll like it
Nanatsu no Bitoku – Will give this another chance, maybe I’ll enjoy it more than the previous one. Should rpobably watch the second half of the original at some point….
Ramen Daisuki – Cute girls and food usually works together well
Uchuu Yorimo – I love cold places, so this seeeeeems like a shoe in, but you never know

    Minor Interest:
Cardcaptor Clear Card – Manga was pretty terrible as far as I got, and I’ll likely never finish the anime original, so yeah. Still, want to give this a go.
Grancrest Senki – Might be interesting
Kokoku – Could be a good srot of show
Pop Team Epic – The style of it is a bit of a turn off, and I’m not sure the comedy will jive with me, but it might be fun

    Continuing from before:
Black Clover – Started off meh, but has gotten much more enjoyable

9999 will hopefully get adapted later down the line. Still, Marchen looks really good.

Guess I’ll marathon Kaijuu Girls S1 and add S2 soon after.

Haven’t seen the first Overlord yet but I may check it out when able.

Hopefully the South Pole expedition won’t include boys. same goes for Ramen Girls.

Personally, I read Citrus for the art. The plot strikes me as too melodramatic, and I can’t relate to the vast majority of characters in the series. While I have high hopes for the anime, I worry that it might not do so well because without the manga art, the series is average at best. Hope I’m proven wrong.

  19. And now I’m actually hyped for Yama no Susume S3! 😉 Didn’t know there was another season coming!

I loved that show, can’t wait for more… And it seems we’ve got enough girls club shows coming out in winter, very good.

    My must watch list is:
Fate/Extra Last Encore – I’m almost as hyped for that as I am for Heaven’s Feel Lost Butterfly
    Overlord 2 – I loved season 1.
Ryuuou Oshigoto – I don’t really like Lolis but the novel is pretty fun to read, so I expect the same thing from the anime.
Killing Bites – Looks interesting and I love horror so I’ll definitely check it out.
Dagashi Kashi 2 – Season 1 was pretty good in my opinion, and while the change of studio worries me, I’ll give it a try.
Boku no Hero Academia season 3 – What can I say? I love BNHA, and the author does know how to develop his characters.
Arifureta – The novel is good, so I’m curious to see the adaptation, also Hajime is a pretty cool MC.
Caligula – It did catch my attention.
Made In Abbyss season 2 – I thank the gods for this, the show was awesome.
Index season 3 – Hell yeah! hope that it does well in sales so we can get a season 4,I need to see World War 3 animated.
Date a Live Season 3 – I love the light Novel so it’s nice to see a new season.
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari – Hyped as fuck for this.
Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya – While I’m a little scared of what Netflix might do to it,Saint Seya is one of my favorite anime/manga so it’s a must watch for sure.
A.I.C.O.: Incarnation – The sinopse left me intrigued.
Shingeki no Kyojin season 3 – It’s shingeki, nothing more to say lol
One Punch Man season 2 – It saddens me that it’s not going to be produced by Mad House but JC Staff is a good studio so I’ll watch it.
Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory – I’m a big fan of Fullmetal Panic so there’s no way that I’ll not watch this.
Grancrest Senki – I love action and fantasy and it seems that it’s not harem, which is a pleasant surpirse.
Cardcaptor Sakura – Nothing to say, it’s a classic.
Darling in the Frakxxx – Visuals are good and the story looks good(or at least decent)
Shinmai Maou OVA – Just because I want to see the ending animated, and Basara is cool, one of the few are MC’s that is not a dense whimp.

    Shows that I might check:
Citrus – To be honest, the manga became boring to me, but maybe this will change with the anime, afterall, it’s different when you see everything animated.
Fairy Tail 2018 – The last arc of the manga is atrocious but if they change and make it better than I’ll give it a try.
Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku – The light novel is enjoyable so I’ll give the anime a chance.
Dorei-ku: Boku to 23-nin no Dorei – The Animation – The psycological tag and the weird concept does look interesting(and bizarre)
Violet Evergarden – Stunning animation(as expected of Kyoani) and the story looks good.
Itou Junji: Collection – It’s Junji Ito, one of the best horror mangakas, I’ll watch it for sure.

Shows that I will not watch:
Tokyo Ghoul: RE – I would be hyped as fuck if it was an studio like Bones, Madhouse or even JC Staff doing it, but it’s Pierrot, they butchered such a great manga.
High School DxD season 4 Hero – I hate Issei, enough said.

Long ass list I know haha, but 2018 will be such a great year for anime!

  21. Takunomi was released. and well, the scenes it seems it would have a high yuri potential(since alchohol + beautiful/cute girls together is.. suspicious). And i liked the graphics and the characters so beautiful. Also michiru reminds me of Yuu of “Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san” in the appearance.
