Princess Principal Amazon Cover

Genres: Action, Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Themes: Espionage/Spies, Politics, Steampunk

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: Five girls live in 19th century London, a city within the Albion Kingdom divided into east and west (Commonwealth and The Kingdom) by a large wall. The girls serve as undercover spies enrolled as students at the prestigious Queen’s Mayfair school. The girls make use of their individual abilities to remain active in the underground world of disguise, espionage, infiltration, and car chases.

Caped Spy

Leading lady Ange with the always wonderful top hat and cape combo.

Princess Principal can be best described as a kick ass spy flick with lots of dramatic moments, some sexiness and badass hotties and cuties blowing enemies and viewers away with their coolness.

An interesting about the narrative is that the episodes are presented out of order ala Haruhi Suzumiya’s arcs. What this means is the events of each episode are randomized. What helps make it less difficult to know what is going on and at what time is that each episode “Case” is numbered and viewers must pay attention to the case number to find out when the events of the episode took place. For example, episode 8 is “Case 20” whereas episode 9 is “Case 11”, clearly indicating ep9’s events took place long before ep8’s. The reason behind most of the episodes being out of order (until the last quarter of the season of course) is unknown to yours truly but it does not affect the show’s flow very much as several episodes contain their own story with a beginning and end while the ones that contribute to the storyline are carefully placed close together.

The show is set in a fictional 20th Century England that has its fair share of factual events thrown in here and there. History buffs can pick up on some of them if they pay close attention. Even without much historical knowledge some of the events have some good messages and the setting is explored in as much detail as possible in 12 episodes. While there are political disputes/struggles on the show they are not as important to follow in detail the narrative as in, say, Izetta: The Last Witch. Speaking of observation there are also hidden details in the background as the story progresses. Even the episode titles have hidden messages behind them. Also as this is a spy flick expect several alternate identities/code names, different allegiances, back door deals, swerves, cars, guns and other cool spy stuff.

Ange dodging bullets

Expect several crazy action scenes.

The animation is really good. It goes for the brown and gray aesthetic and while this may sound uninteresting, rest assured the show pulls it off spectacularly. Plus it is set in a gloomy slums where only the middle and upper class buildings have SOME additional colors besides brown and gray so it fits. The animation shines its brightest during action scenes from the simple school sword duel to the awesomeness of using Gravity Rush style combat with gun play while running on the side of a blimp high in the sky. The soundtrack fits the show but what the stand out themes are clearly one of the best OPs of 2017 in PriPri’s “The Other Side of the Wall” and its ED “A Page of My Story” (which like Flip Flappers‘ ED sequence has a similar style and some hidden messages in it too).

Cute spies on wheel

Leading ladies from left to right: Dorothy, Chise, Ange, Princess and Beatrice

Now on to our leading ladies and their roles.

  • Dorothy: The team leader and the oldest. She is the designated driver, skilled with submission and bone breaking techniques and is fully aware of her beauty, which comes in handy many times on missions.
  • Chise: While short she is actually the muscle of the team thanks to her nearly unmatched swordsmanship. She is also, personally speaking, the cutest.
  • Ange: The main protagonist of the show and the most skilled of the five in espionage. An “alien from the Black Lizard Planet” she is good at almost everything spy related and her weapon of choice is a “Gravite” powered orb that allows her to defy gravity.
  • Princess: As her name suggests she is the princess of the Albion Kingdom and future heir to the throne. However, there is a secret connection between Ange and her along with a personal agenda that led to her joining the team. While not skilled in combat her royal connections and personal traits are a valuable asset to the team.
  • Beatrice: Princess’ aide and initially reluctant member of the team. Because of her…past she has some skills with gadgets though her most useful is one in particular whose origin is…ehhhhhhhh.

Each of the girls contributes something on missions whether participating or on the sidelines and, of course, this being a drama, have dark secrets that are eventually revealed. While action-packed the show is not devoid of emotionally moving and heart wrenching scenes. What the show does exceptionally well is that by the end of it viewers will find all five members likable both as spies and characters. Should a viewer feel one of them is not fleshed out enough or there is not much to them, worry not for all ladies get their time in the spotlight. None are left underdeveloped or feel like they are just “there”.

Ange X Princess 3.jpg

The top couple on the show.

As for the yuri. There is one side-pairing but the most prominent couple is Ange X Princess. Now this is one of those couples who do not utter the “L” word often or use it in romantic moments…BUT that does not mean the message of their true feelings for each other is not loud and clear. Their love is true and becomes clearer as the show progresses. They just do not say “I love you”…because they do not need to.

Lastly, I mentioned in Battle Girl High School that a villain does not depth or layers to be entertaining. Just be interesting to watch. BGHS’ villain failed, whereas PriPri’s “Duke of Normandy” succeeded. Like BGHS’ big bad The Duke does not get a lot of screen time but he has a commanding presence, meaning whenever he is on screen, you pay attention. The same goes for his foxy right hand woman who has a more active role. There are other enemies either hired by The Duke is definitely the most notable threat despite preferring to work behind the scenes.

Overall Princess Principal is a show that has the best gripe a great show could ask for “I WANT/NEED MORE! NEW SEASON WHEN!?”. The animation is really good, the cast is stellar, the setting is really cool, the main plot is neat and the character stories are excellent. While the yuri is not “in your face” it is certainly far from unnoticeable. Subtle but not “soft” in the slightest. The show ended in a way that leaves room for many more future “Cases”. All we can do is hope we get to see more of them.

I have to respectfully disagree, despite not having any yuri, Made in Abyss has blown everything else out of the water in terms of sheer awe-inspiring presence, it’s by far the best anime this season out of the ones I’ve watched. That’s not to say the others are bad, mind you; MiA is just a modern masterpiece that, at least I think, deserves a good, 24, or even 48 episodes dedicated to it.

PriPri and MiA are top 2 by far. If you compare their least entertaining episodes, PriPri has the advantage (there were basically no bad episodes). MiA has an incredible setting and atmosphere. It is so difficult to compare though seeing as both the stories are only half-told right now (refuses to consider PriPri not getting a second season).

If you’re going to do a non-confirmation, this really is the way to do it. Make it plainly obvious what the situation really is and allow the characters the room to express their feelings clearly without words. No teasing or baiting, no “well, maybe if you look at it squinting with your head cocked,” just obvious without being obnoxious. That scene on the beach at the end was perfect with the girls teasing Ange about not being into romance and Ange almost saying out loud that she is actually already involved with someone before being interrupted. And then the hand holding.

Anyway, as to the show itself, pretty much excellent. Maybe not perfect as I would have liked a little more closure and a little more use of the “out of order episodes” gimmick but otherwise completely on point all the way through. An easy series to recommend to anyone and I really hope we do get another season.

Pretty much. That “letting the hair down” line hint to a “We’ll tell them the time is right” conversation.

Doesn’t always have to be perfect to be a MUST WATCH show. This is a MUST WATCH show.

sniffle that was sooooo beautiful, I loved this show!
Wish the yuri had been a bit more “in your face”. Welp, I’ll be patiently waiting for doujins now 😀
I’m so glad they all made it out alive, some pretty serious death flags were raised last week and I was pretty sure either Ange or Princess would sacrifice herself for the other, and when Princess got shot, I think I just flatlined for a moment…
Also I really want a season 2, if only to see that annoying cunt Zelda getting what she deserves! :p

It didn’t need to be. Twas still beautiful and obvious.

Princess was willing to do so for Ange and the world’s sake. Hopefully we will get to see Zelda pay for her crimes.

That ending was so yurific. I’m fairly sure Ange was 4 words from admitting she’s in love with Princess lol. The flying scene was a lot like the broom ride from Izetta actually (though, IMO, not quite as romantic, but then again that was probably the most blush-worthy scene in all of anime ever)

In any case, I liked that ending and I think it shows the creators are optimistic about a 2nd season? I would be very happy if that were the case as I think a 2nd season could be even stronger. I’ve heard it’s selling well but I’m not too sure. If I can get the Blu-Rays I definitely will!

So much I could say, but I think you already know how much I loved this show. I pray for another season, but like you said, Princess x Ange was clear and beautifully presented, so I’m content. Best anime of the season hands down, potential for the year, but that’s TBD.

My major complaint about this is show that if it had a second cour it wouldn’t feel so rushed at times. The ending, while good and all, did feel kinda rushed and personally I’d have liked some more closure to it as well. All in all though this show really stands out for me this season as it was just so different from anything I’ve seen recently and honestly it just felt refreshing to watch. Nothing against anime set in a school setting and all, but having something different like this, or a work life show, is always a welcome breath of fresh air. I just wish we got more of that, at least more good ones. Tally it all up though, I’ve gotta give this show a 9/10. Hit all the strides and while it’s not perfect, it delivered on pretty much everything else. Now give me another season!!

    • OG-Man says:

Clearly the show ending the way it did was a sign from the writers saying “We WANT to give the people more!” All we can do is hope we get more.

With how saturated the high school and even MMORPG settings are it feels refreshing whenever a show is NOT set in either of those two locations regardless of how good they may be.

As I told some peeps here, a show doesn’t have to be perfect to be a MUST WATCH! This show is a MUST WATCH!

Also forgot to mention, but Studio 3Hz has really impressed me in recent times. Granted I’ve only seen a few of their shows but I’m impressed with what they’re doing, especially since out of the 4 shows they’ve done, 3 of them are originals. I’m really interested in checking out Flip Flappers now, especially since it was a talked about show when it aired.

They did Dimension W, although that was a joint project with Orange, but their other original show, which I believe is their debut show, is Sora no Method. I actually reviewed it but didn’t really like it.

Ah. Sora no Method was by them too. I thought it was average at best. Too melodramatic for me to get into. The dark blue haired girl was hot though.

I was expecting a FAR different ending to this, to be honest, lots of death and whatnot, all that stuff.

While I am glad that we got a “good end”, I feel like nothing really “concluded”, it desperately needs a second season tbh.

The yuri alone, however, is quite amazing, I like how they created a great backstory for Ange and Charlotte that gives them a far deeper connection than anyone else in the series, all in all, this is the best fresh ship of the summer season, and I’m more than satisfied with it.

The ending aside, the anime was great overall, as it succeeded at innovation, which not many things can accomplish, and I’m just a sucker for steampunk-style settings, although, I can’t help but think that something was missing, but I can’t put my finger on it, I’ll have to ponder on that later.

In conclusion, PriPri was definitely a qualified success that just didn’t go on long enough for a proper finale, and I can’t really fault it for that, since the anime industry can be a bit ruthless at times.

I’m so glad they made it to Casablanca! How often you see shows (anime and live-action alike) where 2 characters promise to go somewhere but never make it?

all in all a very good show. Great action and yuri aside, i like that it “pull no punches” when it comes to the gimmer side of the spy business. It would’ve been a lot less engaging if every enemy gets “befriended”, magical-girl style, if u know what I mean?

I love this show, you know I really do. But that ending was just okay for me, I was expecting for more. I was left saying, “That’s it?” But I guess things were left in such manner because there’s a huge possibility for it to have another season. This show is not only well-written but it has so much potential to be developed further on. I also love the show’s OP and ED. It’s something I can’t just skip and I often find myself playing it on repeat. All in all, I have nothing but praises for PriPri.

Oh, Ange x Princess is just amazing. Their chemistry and love for each other is off the charts. Well, there seems to be a trend of “love confession” scenes in the air lately (lzetta and LWA– yes, I’m counting LWA). I’m just so glad I watched this show. Definitely one of my top 10 this 2017.

Clearly it’s a setup for a second hopeful season, hence why it didn’t end in a grand fashion but still awesome. Like I told everyone here let’s hope we get it.

Lesbians flying in the air sharing a romantic moment should definitely be a thing from now on. I guess LWA’s also counts.

Ah. I wanted to make sure so I asked some fans who were at the Summer festival and got a more in-depth interview. To said interview, he said he was surprised by the large amount of Ange X Princess support but didn’t dismiss fans who interpreted their relationship as romantic. He simply didn’t want to go into full detail because of how homosexuality, especially lesbianism, is handled in Japan. Basically fans can interpret them as destined to marry no problem. For now it’s best to wait and see but don’t consider this baiting because it isn’t. He also said in a less public interview that the two are VERY CLOSE, meaning they’re much, much MUCH MORE than “best friends”. Just gotta wait for a 2nd season to be announced.

The same was said about NanoFate, aka Nanoha X Fate from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Eventually they embraced the fandom and rolled with it to the point that Nanoha and Fate’s relationship is so obvious that an on-screen “I love you” isn’t needed. Plus that way they can get away with it without upsetting Japan’s ethics and stuff. That’s NanoFate logic. If you think about it too hard it’ll come off as complicated but it isn’t really.

I’ve only just finished this show so I’m a little late to the party…but I feel like if they were against the idea of Ange and Princess in a romance, they would have stated it outright. That’s how these kinds of situations usually go, they deny it straight up. Saying they leave it to our imagination tells me they’re totally on board with it but, as others have said, they don’t want to make it too direct lest they draw ire from certain…difficult fans. It’s a clear wink wink nudge nudge to me.

And even if you don’t take it that way, it literally is saying that Ange and Princess can be considered a romantic couple. That’s just right there in the text.

Cool London steampunk yuri anime with an enjoyable cast.

Honestly, I don´t like the idea that S2 has 6 movies and they were announced for this year, but non of them was aired yet. There are only 4 months left, so I wonder, when they will.

    I prefer a S2 as a normal 12 or 13 episodes one.
