New Game!! (Double Plus) Episode 9: Fashion Flashback

Insect Five.jpg

Insect Five. I wonder which Super Sentai team this one is parodying…if there’s even an insect-themed Sentai team.

Hyper Fangirl Hifumi.jpg

Hifumi praising the Insect Pink for her many performances.

We joined Hajime on a pseudo-date with Yun and her siblings at an Insect Five show. I should have expected to see Hifumi there as well but I still burst out laughing.

Hajime's old friend Akki.jpg

Hajime’s old friend Akki.

Anyway an old friend from high school, Akki came up to say hello. I don’t think anyone was surprised by how Yun reacted to Akki being all chummy with her. As for Hajime, it’s one of those “I don’t want to show this super cool friend of mine that I’m really a nerd/otaku and not a cool babe like her” scenarios.

High School Hajime, Akki and a third friend.jpg

Hajime, Akki and a third friend from high school.

Hajime got along well with Akki and the third friend as they were sexy fashion babes but she didn’t want to tell them about her “nerdy” hobbies. Sadly we live in an age where some people still didn’t get the memo that nerds are awesome too…as long as they are mentally sane of course.

High School Yun.jpg

Yun from high school.

As we all noticed throughout the show Yun’s not as social as Hajime so her looking like she did in high school isn’t too surprising. Anyway Yun decided to change herself and be true to herself, thus becoming the lolita dressing cutie we know and love.

Hajime reasuring Yun.jpg

Hajime reassuring Yun.

Yun talked about how hard she worked to change herself and was embarrassed by how much more fashionable Hajime was all this time. Hajime then said in her own way that she liked the way Yun dressed, getting her hopes up for a second. The Akki thing was resolved as one would expect from a lighthearted comedy with dramatic elements.

What could have been…

3D Rhythm Combat Game

Tsubame and Momo’s 3D Rhythm Combat Game.

After the commercial we joined the gang checking out Tsubame and Momo’s very impressive game. The others saw their talent and gave them legit assignments.

Umiko's first task for Tsubame and Nene.jpg

Umiko-kun’s assignment for Tsubame and Nene.

Tsubame and Nene had to make a 3D Maze mini-game though because Nene’s not as skilled as Tsubame hers was more a trial to work on her 3D programming skills while Tsubame’s was a legit mini-game for PECO. To the surprise of very few NeneUmi’s professional relationship is still as cute as their, shall we say, personal one.

Young Tsubame and Momo.jpg

Middle School Tsubame and Momo.

Umiko-kun went off to work on other stuff while Nene and Tsubame talked about their aspirations. Tsubame brought up her middle school years with Momo and her dream of wanting to work in the gaming industry together with her. Nene, as we all know, initially joined the team for the lulz but then it became so much more. This bothered Tsubame because while she’s putting her heart and soul into her dream Nene’s getting an easier road to the top because of her relationship with Umiko-kun. Though taken aback by Tsubame’s harshness she did understand the need to step up her game lest she wanted to be left behind…or worse.

Nene's dream.jpg

Nenecchi FIGHTO! Work hard for that praise! Oh and of course to make a name for yourself BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY PRAISING!

Momo's assignment.jpg

Momo’s assignment.

Momo’s assignment was to design the following characters. She accepted after 10 seconds or so.

Momo's Assets 1.jpg

Momo’s sweet booty.

Momo's Assets 2

Momo’s incredible assets.

At the dinner table we saw how careful Tsubame was cooking for Momo. Very meticulous.

The truth about Momo.jpg

A secret about Momo was revealed.

To sum up the Momo/Tsubame segment, Tsubame is Momo’s waifu and seems to be having the same troubles Hifumi, Yun and Rin are, furthering solidifying this as a show about cute and sexy lesbian office ladies having difficulty confessing their feelings to their crushes.

Just to clarify about Nene and Naru’s assignments: Nene is working on the maze game as part of her training for programming in 3d, while Naru is working on a genuine minigame that will be part of Peco. They aren’t working on the same thing.

I found myself thinking, “just date already!” for many parts of this episode. It was nice seeing more of Hajime and Yun’s one on one interactions(sans her siblings obviously) as we haven’t gotten to see that as much. Nene and Umiko are clearly as strong as ever, but I’m glad Nene has made a goal to earn her place there and really show her wife what she can do and get that praise. Aoba and Hifumi were cute with their shared glances of uncertainty over Momo’s thoughts on her assignment. As for Momo and Naru, they are clearly already married, as I suspected and they’re adorable. We didn’t get much of Rin x Kou this ep, but I’m sure they were off being cute somewhere as well.

Yun and Hajime, like the other Super Mega OTPs are progressing smoothly.

I freakin’ LOVE NeneUmi! Nenecchi FIGHTO!

Ah yes. That was a small but still cute moment.

MomoNaru are certainly on the right path to living the rest of their lives together as one.

RinKo paid the ultimate price for letting the young-uns get more screen time together but their sacrifice was definitely not in vain. Hopefully we’ll see them flirting again soon.

Insect Five is based on the series that was adapted into Power Rangers Samurai. And I just noticed that the red helmet has been on Hajime’s desk for ages.

Aoba managed to work herself brilliantly into the payback chain.

I’m now officially onboard with Naru x Momo. I hope we get to see the twice cooked pork with pork scene in the future.

      Sweet! Thanks for clarifying that.

      Triple Chain!

Both ladies will work hard to make that happen.

Samurai used kanji for the helmet viewports. Finally my years of Power Rangers knowledge pays off!

Most of my Power Rangers (Not Sentai) knowledge comes from watching Linkara’s History of Power Rangers series.
I watched up till “In Space”. Other entries up till Dino Thunder I watched bits and pieces. If I remember correctly Ninja Storm is where I stopped watching regularly. Not because it sucked but I lost interest. Linkara helped refresh it though. I saw and enjoyed the 2017 movie after all.

      • Mauron says:

I’ve seen from Mighty Morphin to Dino Charge, but have slacked off thus far on Ninja Steel. I could at least talk to Hajime about the short lived Japanese version of Power Rangers, which started with Lost Galaxy.

So you’re definitely a longtime fan of the franchise. Very cool.

We are rapidly approaching the extent of the manga release (1 chapter in fact)… Which means soon we’ll be going into unseen territory!
Though the chapters have been getting released just quickly enough to keep ahead of the anime.

Momo/Tsubame is such a great pairing (and Momo is.. damn…) that they almost have me forgetting about Rin and Ko. Almost. I really miss Rin and Ko though and I hold out hope we’ll get a little more of them yet.

  6. ArcaJ says:

The Yun/Hajime “date” was a highlight of the episode. If they don’t start dating soon, I’M going to explode!

While I didn’t like Naru’s attitude towards Nene, I can understand it. Naru does everything for Momo. Getting into programming is just a part of that for her. If she can help her beloved Momo with her own talent, it would be all the validation she needs. I’m not surprised that Momo is a total slob at home. Naru’s been spoiling her into submission.

  7. LuzeriP says:

Hajime and Yun date was sweet. Talk about past life, relationship progress. Being a nerd is cool! A fun nerd of course, not a grumpy one.

I understand why Naru was so upset. It’s like you study all the time but someone who don’t study gets to be the first. But, it’s just some people born with natural talent. We just have to accept it. And I’m sure Nene never meant to hurt Naru’s feeling.

Naru and Momo was cute too. That cockroach (?) incident was funny. I don’t think Momo will use that bowl again. It was fun episode. I miss Ko x Rin tho.

    • OG-Man says:

      Right on.

Precisely. Nene didn’t mean to do any harm at all. Naru didn’t need to be so harsh.

      Definitely a roach.

Hopefully they have something special planned very soon.

  8. More great stuff, though…a super sentai team called the Insect Five has a spider in it? Eh. Glad one of the kids/people/conversations at the show actually adressed that bit. Spiders are vicious arachnids! Not cute little insects (except mosquitos)! (<–absolutely not an arachnophobe)

More relationship moments! Yay! I am pleased with this.

That Idol/dancing game was the best, I’d like to try it. I really like how Hajime looked with longer hair, but I only like long haired girls so that may be it. Nonetheless another excellent episode.

  10. K says:

Hearing about Yun and Hajime’s high school days was great. Hajime didn’t want Akki to know about her hobbies but it turned out that she didn’t have to hide her power level. If she only knew then. Well, that’s a weight off her shoulders. As for Yun, she’d be a trendy dresser if she had met Hajime in high school. Seriously, those two compliment each other.

Oh no, looks like there’s discord in the Programming Team now. The good times couldn’t last sadly. Nene will have to show Tsubame that she’s not joking around, hopefully reducing the hostilities in the process.

My, oh my, I thought Momiji had everything about herself in order but she’s actually quite, for lack of a better word, awkward. Good thing Tsubame’s there to help her…until that little illness stopped her. Momiji was so nonchalant about her appearance, which was amusing.

It’s nice to see Yun and Hajime go on another so-called date. It’s interesting to see that Hajime look different in high school. Too bad she didn’t keep her long hair. Yun on the other hand looked like an Otaku.

Narumi and Nene becoming rivals is bound to happen. Hopefully, Nene will work hard to win Umiko’s praise.

Wow, this series is sexier than I remember it. Perhaps I shouldn’t have dropped season one after a few episodes.

Hajime and Yun going on a date was really cute. Really liking those two and how well they play off each other. Nice to see the home like of Momo and Tsubame too. And of course sexy Momo cooling off in front of the fan. Easily among the top highlights of the ep. So, so so, sexy. Thank you Joe for making those gifs of that scene.
