Yuri Talk: “From Outta Nowhere” Yuri Reveals (Spoiler Warning)

WARNING! This post will contain spoilers for several mainstream animated series, anime and one game.

In most of the following series there will be a common trend.

Mirai offers Riko her clover

These two will be brought up.

First of all let us begin by my explaining what do I mean by “From Outta Nowhere”. To the surprise of none of my longtime fans I got the term from pro wrestler Randy Orton’s finishing maneuver, the RKO, that he often hits opponents with when they least expect it, hence “from outta nowhere”. In the case of this post it will be used to reference yuri reveals that came:

  • At the last minute, meaning at the end of an episode or a series finale.
  • A sudden or blink and you missed it moment during an episode.
  • In comics.

Some of these pairings during the series’ runs already had fanbases shipping them but then had a moment that had fans’ jaws drop. The reveals often become clearer thanks to writer/director confirmation that are summed up with “Yes Patricia, they are gay”.

The following are examples of shows/games I am aware of that implemented “from outta nowhere” reveals.

Kitty and Bunny

Kitty and Bunny.

The first “from outta nowhere” reveal I am bringing up that was intentionally written to pass by the minds of younger and even older audiences was Kitty and Bunny from the Courage the Cowardly Dog episode, The Mask. This was about a masked woman who came to Courage’s house. She initially hid her face behind a mask and beat up Courage because he was a dog. Eventually the woman, a cat named Kitty explained the reason she hated dogs was because her friend Bunny was in an abusive relationship with a gangster dog named Mad Dog and she wanted to help Bunny get away from him, which with the help of Courage she does. The reveal in this episode was subtle because it was not until writer interviews that the yuri was revealed, though there were subtle hints from both Kitty and Bunny along with Mad Dog’s jealousy of Kitty.

Renee Montoya.png

Maggie and girlfriend.jpg

Above: Renee Montoya. Below: Maggie Sawyer and Toby Raines.

Some other Western examples include officer Renee Montoya and captain Maggie Sawyer who made their animated debuts in the 90’s Batman and Superman animated series respectively. While Renee’s yuri power was revealed in comics, Maggie’s was known to comic readers but in a surprise her then girlfriend Toby Raines got a surprise cameo in the Superman cartoon in the final arc of the show during Darkseid’s invasion of Metropolis. Again if viewers had not read comics they would not have been aware of Toby Raines’ true identity and relationship with Maggie. The writers later revealed that Toby’s cameo was to acknowledge Maggie’s yuri power.

Fun fact: Katie Kane, aka Batwoman, had been in romantic relationships with Renee and Maggie in different points of her crime fighting career.

Korra and Asami final scene.png

Korra and Asami last scene in The Legend of Korra show.

Now for more recent examples of a “from outta nowhere” reveal starting with Korra and Asami. What most non-yuri fans saw as two close friends going on cracker jack adventures…yuri fans knew the truth thanks to several moments throughout Books 3 and 4. Of course the writers had to give confirmation to put yuri fans’ minds at ease. It also helped that in the (at the time of this writing) upcoming comic sequel series “Turf Wars” something very big was planned for our heroines…very big indeed. Find out HERE.

Bubblegum and Marceline.png

Princess Bubblegum and Marceline.

The next recent example is one that follows the “sudden or blink and you missed it moment” where their yuri powers were revealed, Adventure Time’s Marceline and Princess Bubblegum. While the Bubbeline vibes KIND OF began in “Go With Me” with Marceline addressing Bubblegum in a casual manner (first name), the ship truly sailed in “What Was Missing”. Then there was “Sky Witch” and…hoo doggy. Readers know what is coming next. At a convention questions were asked regarding Bubbeline’s relationship and some hints in the Adventure Time comics. The writers then revealed that they used to date. As the show continued, every time Bubbeline had some alone time most of it was dedicated to them throwing hints about their past, dealing with whatever present situation they were in and even discussing a possible future. Long story short the one and only obstacle that is (at the time of this writing) stopping Bubbeline from getting a “from outta nowhere” reveal is Adventure Time’s global broadcast. What this means is for the time being the best fans can hope for is a last minute confirmation during the series finale or another comic book bombshell.

I am not 100% certain if Steven Universe also belongs in this post as an example so I will leave it up to the audience to decide. Jeff’s parents from Clarance on the other hand, do belong as a “blink and you missed it” reveal.

I am certain there are other examples but right now let us go to the land of the rising sun.

Alisha X Rose.png

Alisha and Rose from Tales of Zestiria The X.

This is a somewhat incomplete entry because (again as of this writing) I want to finish the Tales of Zestiria game before checking out the anime. What I can say in regards to the pairing in question, Alisha X Rose, in the game (from the 30 hours I have played so far) there are definitely some moments that legitimize this pairing. I imagine there will be more as I continue. I do not know if there were many moments in the anime but I imagine there were more than a few before the end. For readers wondering about the male protagonist Sorey and how Alisha and Rose feel about him. From what I have played their relationship is more of friendship and respect as a noble hardworking Shepherd than a love interest for either one. Besides, fans of this Tales entry know that there is only one true love for the honorable lad. Hint: Aqua-blue. Anyway back to the anime there was a scene during the end credits where Alisha and Rose were sitting together and a bombshell was dropped worthy of making it into this post.

kumiko-confesses-to-asuka

One of my favorite moments of 2017.

Next up is one that I will not soon forget, the last scene in the second season of Hibike! Euphonium. While I imagine a certain fanbase is writhing in pain I for one had been gifted with a wonderful “from outta nowhere” reveal between Kumiko and Asuka. While it is not yet 100% official the finale gave us hope that it could happen one day should there be a continuation…as long as KyoAni does not go down the dark path and announce “Kumiko Love Story”.

Official art.

Now we come to the main reason I brought the “from outta nowhere” topic up. While there have been several strong pairings in past Pretty Cure installments such as the legendary Hibiki X Kanade from Suite! PreCure and the polarizing Mana, aka Mana The Conqueror’s stealth harem from Doki Doki PreCure, one couple went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to yuri power in the franchise filled to the brim with strong shipping material. I am of course referring to Mirai X Liko (the correct spelling of her name was revealed in episode 40) from Mahou Tsukai PreCure. MTP was chock full of ship worthy moments between the two from hand holding, snuggling, mesmerized stares, longing for one another and a PreCure staple of raising magic infants. However, what got these two to the top of the mountain were two things:

mirai-and-liko-in-the-sky

The first would be this scene in episode 49 which was an amazing moment in and of itself. Then there was the “from outta nowhere” reveal in the bonus chapter of the official MTP manga.

Mirai X Liko Canon Kiss.jpg

This is not from a fan doujin.

So what was the point of this entire Yuri Talk segment? To bring up that a last minute or sudden reveal of two girls/women having romantic feelings for one another instead of early on in the show is not so bad. Sometimes we need the head honchos to say the magic words “Yes Patricia, they are gay” to pump up the joy of a magical moment but hey, it is very much appreciated when we do get confirmation. That or just I wanted to share my joy whenever pairings I shipped HARD get confirmed canon and welcome yuri surprises from the past.

fine-and-izetta-longing-for-one-another

Of course I would not forget these two.

PS: Did you all think I would forget the GLORY that was Fine X Izetta’s Magic Broom Ride and that the show’s seiyuu confirmed in a convention that the two are indeed a couple? Come now, it was my favorite anime of 2016.

Here’s some evidence for someone who asked about it:

So, any other “From Outta Nowhere” reveals readers feel worthy of mentioning? By all means share them in the comments.

  2. I’m not sure about Steven Universe either, since 2/3 of the main gems, because one of them is a relationship and other is heartbroken and it’s pretty big part of both of those characters
    spoilers
    Garnet and Pearl
So I think I would not say it’s out of nowhere :X

    In comics.
There are bunch of lesbian characters in marvel and DC comics, though I’m pretty sure Marvel has more.
Welp, can’t think of anything more to say now :X

Precisely why I said I don’t think it belongs on this list. Like you said it’s part of their character development.

I mentioned those characters in particular because they got screen time and got away with their established or eventual gayness in a time where it was looked down upon a lot more than it is now.

Alisha and Rose is a decent ship, and then you play the DLC and you can’t imagine how they couldn’t be together.

  4. Well, tired right now, so might think of more later, but two couples/relationships/people that sort of come to mind in this way would be KyoSaya and HomuMado, both from Madoka Magica. While the series/first two movies that tell the same story have a lot of moments between the two pairs, each in their own parts and ways, in Rebellion, we got a whole lot more than that, especially with two very specific moments that pretty much confirmed even to non-Yuri shippers that there was something more going on there…for KyoSaya, more obviously mutual feelings, while for HomuMado, at least Homura’s feelings pretty much slapped the audience in the face with their intensity and a certain word choice from Homura.

But I can try and see tomorrow when I’m less tired if I can think of any others.

KyoSaya was more intense shipping material I imagine while Homura’s love for Madoka is her raison d’etre so, like with Garnet and Pearl it doesn’t really count as “from outta nowhere”.

      • Well, I did mention both ships had moments in the series, but I have for example one friend who absolutely refuses to see anything romantic/relationship-wise in the sense of Yuri in the series (hasn’t seen Rebellion). So while there were moments of great shipping in the series/first two movies, some people, at least, saw them as simply very close friendships, including with Homura’s feelings for Madoka. So while it may not have been out of nowhere entirely, those moments in Rebellion must certainly have been eye-openers for at least a few people who had thought of those relationships as non-romantic/platonic/non-Yuri.

    • Now that I had more time to think, did come up with one perfect example: Cheating Craft, interestingly for an anime of Chinese origin. It has a love pentagram, maybe(?), in which the main guy likes a certain girl, another guy like the main girl, another (mainish) guy possibly likes the main guy, or at least the main girl likes shipping the other mainish guy with main guy (is a fujoshi). And then, with the certain girl that the main guy likes…you’d expect her to like some guy in the group, right? Well, a later episode dropped a bombshell that while some of us crack-shippers had considered a possibility, pretty much nobody saw coming: The certain girl likes the main girl instead of any guy. And pretty much admits to out loud to another girl in the show. If that wasn’t outta nowhere, I don’t know what is.

I was skeptical when I first watch Mahou Tsukai.

I mean sure, I think it will be subtext heavy, but I wasn’t sure whether they can reach Doki Doki level and I was prepared to have Mirai or Liko take interest to a male character. But boy oh boy do I am pleasantly surprised by how gay it turns out.

Not only they have far more subtext than I thought they’ll go (the ending especially is very romantic), they have not one but two daughters, their character growth continue from being friend to lover (as they understand each other more) to married couple (as their daughters grow), and when their subtext moment is lower in the second half of the shows, it is only because they are busy accompany their now growing up kids (shown by when they have time to be alone like in Halloween episode, their interaction turns really intimate without a second)…

I am really, really glad that I can watch the show. Along with the kiss in the manga, it is easily my top and favorite Precure of all time (unless they somehow make an even gayer one).

As for Izetta, let’s just say that I’ve been watching “A Whole New World” AMV for several weeks after episode 11…

Oh, and a theory of mine. Regardless of the canonical status of KumiRei from Hibike, I think we need to give them a shout out for Season 1 Episode 8, because I think Izetta’s moment are inspired by the flirtation between Kumiko and Reina as they climb to the mountain. From how the MC invite their partner to “a walk”, to how the partner touch MC intimately in her face (Reina across the nose, Fine at the edge of Izetta’s left eye), to how the partner “force” the MC to call her partner by name, and finally how the scene end with both MC and her partner sit side by side on the top of hill/mountain. Not to mention Izetta’s and Fine’s pajama look suspiciously like Reina’s dress.

There’s a great “end of series” one in .hack//SIGN. Tsukasa is trapped in the online game and has amnesia, so she and everyone else think she’s male (because her player character is) when she and Subaru fall for each other. When Tsukasa learns that she’s a girl in real life and tells Subaru, they both agree it doesn’t make any difference to their relationship. Then they meet in real life at the end of the last episode, and supplemental material does confirm they started dating after that.

How could you forget about Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha? While there ware people shipping Nanoha X Fate I don’t think anyone expected what happened in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS SPOILER
Fate: “you know If Nanoha is your mama then I am your mama too.”

Also not sure if you can call it “from outta nowhere” since there was implications of it before but I definitely didn’t expect that we will get more then that in Flip Flappers so it surprised me when SPOILERS
Cocona pretty much says to fake Papika that she doesn’t want love as a friend but a different kind of love and then fake Papika invites her to have some fun in bed.

NanoFate is more of a “WE made it canon” scenario.

Maybe my yuri googles are just to much stuck to my face to take them off, but I don’t see how can anyone see that Fate’s line as anything other then her boldly stating to be together with Nanoha, even some of my friends that aren’t even into yuri say the same.

don’t know if that counts since they’re minor characters, but yayoi and shion from psycho pass! i screamed from joy when they explicitly showed them together, an actual canon confirmation like this in an anime is worth more to me than 20 yuri goggles shows.
