303rd G-View: Izetta: The Last Witch

An anime that initially grabbed the Nation’s attention thanks mainly to its poster and the first sentences of its summary. The story being set in a fictional World War 2 Question is whether it delivered something magical and captivating or was false advertising? Let us find out as we take a look at Shuumatsu no Izetta, or Izetta: The Last Witch.

Shuumatsu no Izetta

Genres: Drama, Action, Magic

Themes: Historical, Military, Witches, Politics, Yuri

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: In 1939, the imperialist nation of Germania launched a sudden invasion of its neighboring countries. This conflagration engulfed all of Europe in one fell swoop, and the era was dragged into the maelstrom of war. Then in 1940, Germania set its sights on Elystadt, a tiny principality blessed with breathtaking greenery and water in the Alps. Izetta is a descendant of a clan of witches who had passed down mysterious powers for generations. Since she was little, she and her grandmother lived their lives on the road, traveling between European countries in order to hide these powers. Fiine is the sole daughter in line to succeed Rudolph III, the ruler of the Principality of Elystadt. Since her father has been stricken by illness, she has been busy preparing for Germania’s invasion in his stead.

izetta-vs-basler-2

To put it simply this is a story of two beautiful and badass women leading a small army to war against (a more than obvious) Nazi Germany and doing all they can to fight back against the ever growing superpower that is after world domination. It is story filled with politics, WWII references and weapons up the wazoo (some fictional but many factual), espionage and of course the horrors of war. Basically what one would expect from a WWII inspired story. War historians/history buffs will have a good time recognizing weapons, vehicles and even some historical events during WWII. Oh and the two leading ladies have a very touching romance but more on that later.

fine-and-izetta-at-a-meeting

While the action scenes featuring Izetta riding on her magic boomsticks combating enemy is always awesome to see whenever it is time for an action scene, as mentioned above it is not all about fighting. There are also negotiations, board meeting discussions and behind the scenes shady stuff that is both for the betterment of one’s country or selfishness. When it comes to most negotiations and political/social meetings, this is where Princess Ortfiné Fredericka von Eylstadt, or Finé for short, comes in. While not a skilled soldier (as far as we know) she more than makes up for it with her bravery, unrivaled charisma and never say die attitude. She is an inspirational leader to the people of Eylstadt and its soldiers on the front lines rallying her troops as best as she can and helping them not lose control. During meetings she usually shows that she could hold her own against middle-aged ambassadors and the like who may think little of her due to her not seeming as exerienced because of her age. In short Finé is a sexy badass who may not throw a lot of punches on screen but is also not afraid to get her hands dirty if necessary. Oh and she wears the pants in the show’s main couple.

Next up is the horrors of war part. While the story is fictional that does not mean it has a “good guys are safe but bad guys get axed” narrative. No. No one is safe and can get axed as early as two episodes after their introduction…or less. The reality of war is that no one is safe and this show is no exception. Expect deaths on both sides. Little to no mercy is shown.

The animation is really good. It is a nice blend of colorful goodness, delightful sexiness and brown and gray somberness. As the above image shows there are “male gaze” drawing moments but for anime veterans this is not surprising. It is what it is. It annoys, pleases or is just there. As for the soundtrack, I would argue it is one of, if not my favorite anime soundtracks of 2016 with a kickass OP, delightfully melancholic ED and wicked background tunes. Great stuff all around in regards to presentation.

The majority of the supporting cast do a great job filling their roles as either likable, sympathetic or downright despicable. Some of the heroes even pull off some underhanded tactics yet still have enough empathy to not suck.

fine-x-izetta-in-bed

Last but not least we have the biggest surprise of the show, FineZetta or FinEtta. Not surprising in them making a good couple but rather how GLORIOUS of a couple they ended up becoming. Let me put it this way, one would have to be in denial to not acknowledge Finé and Izetta’s ever growing bond to be anything but romantic. The classic yuri moments are all there ramped up to astronomical proportions. The one thing that is not ramped up much is the sexuality (though it is quite sensual) but what we do get is incredibly heartwarming. I have not talked much about Izetta herself because I was waitinng for this moment. Besides being a badass witch who gives 200% of herself on the battlefield to protect the people she cares about the the princess she loves, when it comes to her interactions with Finé she practically melts in her hands, like an innocent puppy yearning for her mistress’ affections. Luckily for her, next to her people and country Izetta is the  most person in Finé‘s life. Not one day passes when Izetta goes to war that Finé is not worried about her crimson haired beloved. Suffice to say when she returns safely the first to welcome Izetta back most of the time is the princess.

Overall Izetta: The Last Witch to me is almost perfect and one of my favorite fictional World War II stories ever told…for obvious reasons. The presentation, supporting cast, battles, narrative, mercilessness and especially main protagonists are all GLORIOUS! While it is missing a few things to reach near perfection it is good enough to recommend to almost all yuri fans and readers who do not mind occasional fanserive and shows that take some liberties with history. Easily one of my top favorite shows of 2016.

One of my favorite shows this season, specially loved the soundtrack and of course the greatness that is Fine x Izetta.

    Episode 12:

Besides it being a really nice episode with lots of feels and good action between Izetta and Sophie. I was so relieved that in the end, Fine and Izetta got the secret love nest they deserve.

      Great stuff.

      It was an intense finale.

There was no close-up kiss (We did get the magic broom one if we squinted) but hey, the love was as clear as day so it’s all good.

Currently probably #2 best of the season for me, mostly due to Flip Flappers being even more amazing on a consistant level (and only getting better each episode). Not to say Shuumatsu no Izetta isn’t amazing, because it is…but Flip Flappers has been on another level entirely for me…at least depending on what the next episode of that delivers.

Anyway, onto what I thought of Ep12:

I literally dug my (recently cut, thankfully) nails into the palm of my left hand so hard that I could’ve drawn blood, I swear. Especially in the last part of the episode, when it was completely up in the air whether Izetta would survive…

So, ending #3 of the ones I speculated was the one we eventually got. Basically the 2nd best ending out of them. Literally the only thing in my mind during the ending scenes was “is she alive?! IS SHE ALIVE?!” And she was. And I breathed a very large sigh of relief and unclenched my nails from my palm. Though they could’ve done a bit…more with the very final “after 3 years” bit, as it felt a little bit less awesome than the other parts of the episode, but…I can accept it, nevertheless, even if there was no epic kiss at the end.

The pilot & Berkman surviving makes me wonder if we actually could get some kind of a season 2, though with Izetta removing magic (at least from Europe) and the way things ended, it seems unlikely. Would be interesting to see how they’d do it if they did end up going for it, though. Maybe some time years and years (over a decade?) into the future (giving Izetta time to heal somewhat, though there’s also the question of whether her draining all of Europe’s magic reduced her lifespan permanently as well), where another war breaks out somewhere and FinéZetta help to stop it, perhaps in America/Atlanta where there’s still pockets of magic or something. Also could show us a more grown up FinéZetta being all lovey-dovey, if it did happen.

Headcanon for that last part of the mountaintop scene that was shown this episode: After Finé embraces Izetta and gives her her order to fight, she draws back just slightly from Izetta, her face hovering right in front of Izetta’s, and tearfully continues:

    “Just promise me one thing…”
    Finé kisses Izetta
    “…Come back alive.”
Izetta nods, now in tears herself, wanting to make sure that promise holds, but knowing she can’t guarantee it

After the final battle with Sophie-clone: Izetta left a small amount of magical energy stored in her gem, just enough to get her back to Eylstadt to an out-of-the-way location near the capital before collapsing there. From there Finé’s maid finds her and takes her to the out-of-the-way cabin to heal, or to somewhere Finé can find her, from where Finé has the Royal guards/Bianca move her to safety to heal.

Really good show it was. We didn’t get a close-up kiss but at least we got lots of tender loving, badassery and heartwarming/heartpounding moments.

Would be nice to have seen how Izetta’s relocation went down as they made sure to hide her from the good ol’ US of A and Berkman to name a few troublemakers. Your simulation is good too.

Well, I don’t think I can say all the things I’m thinking here, but you already know, so I’ll just keep things brief. This show was amazing, especially considering it was an original anime by an unknown studio. It was nicely animated, colorful, vibrant, the soundtrack was epic and the military aspect was quite enjoyable, as you know how I feel about that theme (I love it). The story overall was just really great and well executed and despite minor flaws, I was thoroughly satisfied.

Last but not least, we have FineZetta, and what’s left to say that hasn’t already been said? They’re amazing, and gay and precious and I love them very much. I foresee them taking a spot in the yuri hall of fame for sure. I’ll admit, I was a bit uncertain towards the end there, but I’m very happy that they were able to have a happy ending, even though Izetta still ended up suffering a bit. However, I know she wouldn’t want us to feel too bad for her, as she did it willingly for her beloved and her precious country. Although they didn’t mention it in the finale, I’m fairly certain she went down in history as a great savior of Eylstadt, as Izetta the Last Witch, hence the name of the show. Definitely in my top 3 of the season, just under I’m sure you know what. =)

So much awesomeness in this show. Not perfect but doesn’t need to be to be one of the yuri nation’s best.

You best believe they are instant hall of fame inductees. Their legend will go down in yuri history as one of the best.

I thought for sure Izetta was gone but she somehow survived and their love continues on. Great show and FineIzetta were an amazing couple too. Gonna miss this show for sure. Still kinda wishing they’d kissed on screen at some point, but oh well. I’m sure they did that and a whole lot more off screen. Thanks for writing about this show, I look forward to reading your thoughts when the new shows start next season!

It will be missed and a close-up kiss would have been much appreciated. What we did get was wonderful though so it’s all good.
Oh yes. I’ll have several interesting shows to discuss weekly next season.

See, I told you that they would survive. Anime with tragic endings are a thing of the past.
Not that I am ever going to complain about that! I’ve already shed my fair share of tears in the 90s and in the early 2000s 🙂

The finale was great and its sad that many characters died but yeah both izetta and Fine loved each other but its really a shame that we never saw them either intertwine their fingers or an up close kiss which would have made the scene even more memorable. Damn the censors but the finale was amazing when compared to many yuri themed anime such as Valkyrie drive, Akuma no riddle and many more..

Such a harrowing episode. The part with the trains reminded me of Karas. Sophie was so broken. Who thought that Matthias was the one who betrayed her? She could take the Princess and the nobles hating her, but the man she loved driving the final nail. That’s why Izetta made it HER decision. If Fine had to order Izetta to her death it would have broken her. So Izetta took that pain on herself.

I’m only disappointed that we don’t get to see Fine and Izetta living happily ever after (with a houseful of corgis) While I’m sure they’re quite happy, I’d like to SEE that. Also, kudos to Fine for hiding Izetta away. Humans are still bastards and I’d imagine the USA (with Berkman) would want to get their hands on her.

Overall, Izetta The Last Witch gave us some fantastic, and fantastically Gay characters. Ortefine was so Gay,I expected rainbows to appear wherever she walked. I loved the fact that her romance with Izetta actually WAS romance. It wasn’t “It’s OK if it’s you. It was “It’s WONDERFUL because you are EVERYTHING to me!”

Izetta grew from the timid girl, who thought she didn’t deserve Fine’s love to the powerful girl who could risk it all BECAUSE of Fine’s love. Where Sophie gave in to despair, Izetta gave her everything to the hope that Fine nurtured in her heart.

I only hope that there are more shows that can give us positive Yuri relationships, along with the entertaining stories and action. (and rely less on pointless fanservice!)

Looking forward to the home video release. And re-animate the Magic Broomstick Ride to SHOW the kiss.

Intense stuff right there and it was awesome. Izetta going for broke and Fine begrudgingly accepting her decision for the greater good. Both women are instant Yuri Hall of Fame inductees.

They kinda went with the KnM ending where they briefly showed the two still being together but not bless us with a full view of them being together. Basically a “Yes Izetta’s still alive and together with Fine” end.

Exactly. It was one of those “You can see it right in front of you that they’re in love without them needing to kiss or say “I love you” to each other on screen”. Their love is as clear as a cloudless day.

Not sure about the “less fanservice” thing. Citrus and Netsuzou Trap for sure won’t be devoid of it.

Director’s Cut Blu-Ray with extra yuri goodness.

Waaaahhhh!!! T_T Izetta!!!! If she died I definitely would cry but seeing her alive made me cry too T_T I’m so happy!!!

They really did a good job in this. They really showed what wars are really made of [blood, pain, suffering, sorrow, and anything that’s not good]. The main couple was a great bonus, I would’ve still watched this show even if it’s just a normal World WarII thing since I like military and historical genres anyway but adding Fine and Izetta made it all even better ❤ . This is one of those shows that really made a mark on me, in a good way. I feel the suspense every time I watch a new episode because there’s a freaking war going on that means anything could happen; on times that seem peaceful and happy that’s usually the time when enemies would just come in and destroy everything. I literally feared for Fine and Izetta safety. I’m really glad I was wrong about Izetta dying in the end T_T.

This show is definitely my Top 1 this season 🙂 I really love it ❤

I’ve the end of this anime with bated breath, sighing in relief when they revealed Izetta is alive! While we didn’t get the picturesque ending I suggested (I hardly doubted that we would), but at least it was ten times better than what we could have gotten. A happy ending the none-the-less and I’m grateful. Now time to watch Magical Girl Killing Project and chase any aftertaste that leaves me with some mindless girls-on-bicycles nonsense!

  10. Got to say that the ending was rushed and underwhelming but at least it had the happy part where both Izetta and Fine survived in the end. The show as a whole was amazing. Izetta and Fine will go on as one of the most lovable yuri couples in recent history.

One of the best anime I’ve ever watched. The ending was kind of lacking, though. It was rushed and didn’t leave much of an impact on me.. But THANK GOD Izetta survived! I’m happy that our couple can now be happy after all the shit they went through. Here’s hoping for a second season.

Hummm really? wow you’ve yet convinced me to watch a show, I wasn’t sure about this one but badassery alone is very good to start with, heartwarming stuff is always welcome too. Thanks good sir. Also I wonder, did you altogether quit on reviewing Lostorage Incited? The last episode was interesting in the possible yuri field.

While it’s certainly in my top 5 favorites, the subtlety of this series made it extremely painful. Not cringy – Strawberry Panic takes the cake on cringy cliffhangers – but the weight of the subtext coupled with intense battle scenes and ulterior motives had me on the edge of my seat nearly every episode. Not to say that’s bad – I hadn’t felt that much adrenaline since Gurren Lagann, and that didn’t even have yuri!

But still….I’m one of those who wouldn’t mind a brief moment of obvious romance. I mean, it can be corny in the wrong situation and it certainly doesn’t fit in modern yuri series nowadays, but I think the last episode could have benefited from a confession or simple post-war date. Perhaps a return to the bakery with Fine’s favorite pie?

Of course, there’s always the chance we get OVAs like Valkyrie Drive did. And yes, they might re-do a scene or two for home releases……so, I’ll get my hopes up a bit. JUST a bit, though.

I have to agree, the display of their relationship was very VERY surprising. Who would have guessed that there might be more then some yuri subtext.

Well, okay, there is no straight up yuri, but this is heavy, heavy subtext they are dishing out here and it’s glorious!

Seriously one of the greatest couples of 2016~

It worked wonders for KorraSami. Also they said they loved each other at certain points, just to not to each other on screen so no I wouldn’t use “subtext” when talking about FineZetta.

One thing that baffled me in the finale was seeing Berckmann alive at the end. I’m just wondering why Basler didn’t just shoot him dead right where he stood. What’s even more messed up about that is, while Berckmann escaped certain death, Sieghard’s end was kinda cheap. I guess it was supposed to be some sort of karma but it just felt weak, to me.

It was also weird how Otto just shrugged off the end of magic like it was nothing and went back to using good old steel and iron. He really just thought of it as a pet project, didn’t he? One that must have costed Germania millions seeing as all the weapons created with magical use in mind became worthless in that instant. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining too much about that because you could say that his interest in magic resulted in the war ending earlier than it did in our reality.

Finézetta is a fine couple through and through. I was a bit surprised that Izetta survived that explosion because it looked like there was no possible way of surviving that. That theory Eerika Norja mentioned earlier in this thread seems plausible though.

Speaking of magic, it’s possible that there are other magical hotspots across the world. Also, I was thinking that magic was a renewable resource, seeing as it can be extracted from nature. As a result, over a period of time, the ley lines in Europe could be restored…but seeing that there would be no witches roaming the land in the future, that doesn’t really matter anymore.

Sophie was quite a tragic character. Her previous life ended painfully and she devoted her next life for the sake of revenge against the land that betrayed her. I think she could’ve been fleshed out more instead of being a generic doomsday villain at times.

Overall, Izetta was a good watch although I think it could’ve been better.

    • OG-Man says:

The Kaiser was meant to reflect the worldview of Hitler’s insanity so him brushing off the disappearance of magic like it was no big deal was something one would expect from a power hungry dictator.

Berkman is one of those villains who won’t go away no matter how hard you try to axe him.

FineZetta are canon, plain and simple.

It is possible for the mana to restore itself at some point but I don’t know if Izetta would have the power to use it anymore after trying to sacrifice herself.

Nah. It wasn’t necessary to flesh out Sophie’s character further than that. She felt betrayed by the man she loved and very few gave her a second chance at life, all because of a dying king’s fears. Also her role in the story was meant to show the difference between her failed romance with royalty and Izetta’s successful one.

In other time i’d say “This show is total GAY!”, but i just stop right here and say another thing, what more suits for “Izetta: The last wich” – Total sweet and romantic. Absolutely. In other yuri-manga/anime/visual novel’s, i try found more “actual gayness”, but here, i found more precios and marvelous state of love – IzettaFine relationship. Espesialy in 11 episode – this was not just awesome, but like “Miracle”. “Izetta” is total bless for us. I have no another words for expressing my emotions.
