Brave Witches Episode 6: Hidden Memories

Oh so her first name is Sasha. It’s easier to remember and type than Ivanovna though if the latter were her first name it’d still be cool.

Sasha and Nipa.jpg

We learn Nipa and Sasha’s Witch abilities. Nipa can heal herself even after taking a severe beating though her weakness is she’s a klutz. Sasha’s ability is being able to remember everything though like any human being there’s a catch which we will get to when discussing her flashbacks.

Stealth Neuroi.jpg

This time the Neuroi’s plan was to use a stealth agent that could now cross lakes thanks to the previous episode’s Neuroi freezing them. The stealth agent would transform itself into objects and then signal another Neuroi to attack the Witch’s base, hitting the important areas one by one.

Hikari was paired up with Sasha and Nipa because the latter two were a bit familiar with the town their base is stationed at. Nipa had only visited the town once and Sasha supposedly had never been there though chasing a the stealth agent proved otherwise as she began remembering things about the town.

Something Nipa drew.jpgSasha upset at Nipa.jpg

The frustration of not being able to take down the stealth agent along with some friction between Nipa and Sasha due to the former’s clumsiness caused the latter to lash out at Nipa because she thought Nipa was spiting her for being too rough when that clearly wasn’t the case.

Scared younger Sasha.jpg

We then got a flashback from Sasha where she realized why she initially couldn’t remember the town. It was because in the past she used her powers to stop a car crash but back then witches weren’t as loved as they are presently and the town being really superstitious Sasha feared that she would be treated like a monster or outcast because of her powers, thus she instinctively stored away those painful memories deep in the back of her mind. Ironically those exact memories were what helped Sasha and friends defeat the stealth agent in the end.

Before being destroyed though the Neuroi got one last missile to launch. Sasha painfully chose to abandon the city (though it was empty so no there would be no civilian casualties). Nipa however, saw how much the city meant to her and used her power to absorb the missile impact.

Nipa told Sasha, after using her self-healing power of course, that she’d gladly use her power to protect everything and everyone she cared for. Sasha then remembered her mother and grandmother saying the exact same thing in the past. She then squeezed Nipa hard to show her relief and thanks.

Still too early to ship these two together but they’d make a cute couple. We’ll see how it goes.

far too late for me! It’s already a done and floating ship in my eyes!
They were really cute together ❤ And the way that Nipa risked her life for Sasha’s precious city, against orders and Sasha’s insistence herself, was just ❤ Plus, it’s because she pays such close attention to Sasha that she noticed Sasha’s slight change in mood about the situation. I don’t think much more than that is really needed.

To me they need some more time snuggling or Nipa teasing Sasha. It’s similar to that fav pair of yours in Euphonium (Not KumiRei. Maybe I’ll feel it during the 2nd half of the show.

Of course there are yuri ships that are set to sail because of far less so maybe I should just accept the ship right now.

      • They had a cameo in the OVA and movie together though (and its already been 4 years since the movie and a year and a half or so since the third Operation Victory Arrow episode, God it feels like its been longer), so make of that what you will.

To me regardless of whether we see them snuggling more, they’re pretty much set in stone. And Nipa is so whipped. XD

Welcome back OG-Man!! So glad that you are completely back in action!

As for the shippings in Brave Witches, including Nipa and Sasha, it would be too early to determine whether they are supposed to be explored further in future, just like you said.
After all, we are still in the middle of the character-introduction arc.

    • It’s pretty obvious that they’re together based on their interactions in the third Operation Victory Arrow OVA and their cameo in the movie, both of which take place after this series (and season 2).

So we know that they are endgame but we are just seeing their relationship while its in the process of forming.

I think you are right about that.
Now I remember they were together in that OVA, so they are supposed to be a pair.

      • I wouldn’t blame you if you forgot (its been over a year since I watched it myself), but I’ve been a big fan of them since I saw their first animated appearance so I was hyped for Brave Witches because I knew we would be getting 12 episodes of them (well not exactly that amount, but a lot more screentime for them than their first animated appearances provided).

And I’ve pretty much loved Nipa ever since I read the chapter of Sky that Connects Us she appeared in alongside Eila and Sanya, so yeah.

      Good to be back.

Exactly. Besides the Countess’ yearning for a harem the others still need to exude some more yuri vibes in my eyes. The hinted ones are currently Georgette X Sada and Sasha X Nipa but I need a bit more from both.

  4. I fucking loved this episode. Episode 6 is par for the course with this franchise as far as best episode of the season and usually involving some wonderful yuri antics between a Suomi/Finnish witch and an (O)russian one, and this was no different.

I love Sasha and Nipa so much, and knew I would right before the show started (their interactions in the OVA and movie certainly helped with that). That sentiment remains unchanged.

The Neuroi were absolutely terrifying too. That stealth drove me crazy, though they had such great designs.

Sasha’s character is so great, I’m totally sold on her. Though I bet her power has Homura and Togo absolutely seething with jealousy since their magic does the opposite, heh.

Hikari and Nipa are also total klutzes and they’re so much fun to watch.

Gundula is so fucking smug too, I got a kick out of her in this episode as well.

Think I covered everything, honestly. All in all that was just such a great episode, like goddamn. ❤

  6. Also I forgot to add that Sasha is short for Aleksandra, and her full name is Aleksandra Ivanovna Pokryshkin. And she has a polar bear familiar, gao gao. ❤

I TOLD you it isn’t halfway until episode 6, especially with any Strike Witches anime!

-Star of the episode has to be that disguised horse. https://i.imgur.com/p0Wkipb.jpg Cracked me up for some reason.
-Does anyone else think “Trace On” Sasha-chan is what censored is supposed to be, and would make a great Illya prisma cameo?

I think just like Brave Witches is supposed to be a more subtle, less fanservicey, more nuanced sequel to Strike Witches, so too is Sasha/Nipa compared to Sanya/Eila. And they’re going to be compared, like it or not. For what it is though, it definitely is a warm and fuzzy kinda-pairing where they use intuition and secret messages instead of declarations to the world.

    • Technically speaking, Brave Witches is an interquel. It takes place between season 1 and 2 of the original, its timeline pretty much matches up with the manga Sky that Connects Us (which has what I believe to be Nipa’s first canon appearance in the franchise, though I could be wrong about that, it was my introduction to her personally anyway).

And yeah I do agree that they’re a more chaste version of Sanya/Eila (the nationalities match up), and I actually am liking them more so far (even though Sanya/Eila’s episodes were objectively the best of each season). But they probably won’t get their own version of Sweet Duet though so who knows. XD

All I gotta say is, man Nipa is so WHIPPED. ❤

I don’t give two cups about comparisons. Don’t get how they’d go as far as compare the two couples after this episode but not my problem.

Not much to say about this episode except that Sasha and Nipa are a good combination. I recommend this shipping despite the facts that they’re actually an air unit, not ships. By the way OG, I can’t wait to read your Keijo!!! Blog. I’m telling ya I enjoy every episode of it. Dat Mio Kusakai character tho, she’s one hot lesbo.
