293rd G-View: Hai-Furi

What was initially expected to another Girls Club anime that took place on ships ended up being something almost entirely different. This is Hai-Furi or High School Fleet in the West.

Hai-Furi Cover

Genres: Action, Sci-Fi

Themes: Battleships, Military, Navy

Number of episodes: 12+2 OVAs

G-Rating: 8/10

Plot Summary: Childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China want to become Blue Mermaids, a new female force established to protect the remaining coastal towns after many countries have sank into the sea. Together with others who shared their dream, they enrolled in Yokosuka’s Marine High School.

Mike's ship, the Harekaze

The Harekaze. The heroine team’s main ship.

I mentioned this when I covered the premiere episode and as the show progressed that statement remained true. Hai-Furi is Girls und Panzer: Navy Edition. Some even compared the show to Arpeggio of Blue Steel which is also valid. What many expected to be what I described in the introduction actually turned out to be more than that, a big time mystery with our heroine crew involuntarily facing one intense ship battle after another with very few short rest periods until much, much later when they become slightly longer. Without giving too much away let us just say that there are many heart pounding ship battles akin to Garupan’s epic tank battles…with less awesomely ridiculous stunts because there is only so much battleships are capable of.

For the majority of the first two quarters of the show the pacing has a kind of relaxed/tense first half and an intense second half in each episode. Things change a bit in the third quarter, and as is customary in 12 episode anime with a plot that has a goal, is heart pounding from the start in the last couple of episodes.

The Spee attacks

Very vague example of a ship attack. It is easier to watch the show than rely on images to see why they are awesome.

The ship battles play out exactly as a viewer would expect even if they had never seen a show or movie about battleships/the navy. So depending on how viewer feels about ships blasting one another with cannons, torpedoes etc. These will either be glorious or uninteresting. It all depends on tastes. To me they are as exciting as airship battles so it is all sweet, sweat inducing hard hitting action. Add the above mentioned mystery element and figuring out what is going on and we got ourselves something special that will surprise viewers who did not look anything up online.

Captain Mike to the rescue

More on the main protagonist and her badassitude in a bit.

Besides ship battles there are also times the Harekaze crew will have to brave Mother Nature’s wrath and some remnants of time. Also with some of the crew being trained to rescue people, since that is the mission statement of the Blue Marines, there will be some occasions where special ops go on rescue missions and these are as awesome as they sound.

This being an anime about battleships viewers will learn about the ins and outs of being part of a ship’s crew:

  • The numerous professions and their important roles including navigator, cook, the crow’s nest, flag girl and many more.
  • How the technology on board the ships work. Even though the show takes place in the future a lot of its terminology can still be applied to present day.
  • Different strategies and board meetings.
  • Ship classes
  • The ships’ history based on the model and historic ship they were named after. Basically like KanColle.

Etc.

Wilhelmina's chest

OG still approves after watching the show.

The cast consisting mainly of cute and sexy girls it is no surprise that there are instances where they show off their assets with there being figures both the “flat is justice” and the “meat lovers” can appreciate. Unless this is the first anime a reader has ever seen then it is nothing new. It is what it is.

The animation quality and soundtrack are both pretty good. The ocean being pleasant to look at, interesting variety of islands when they are shown and the girls being cute and/or sexy based on measurements/curves. The soundtrack has great tunes that fit the required mood excellently while the OP is rockin’ and the ED is nice.

Mike and her crew

Captain (far right down below) and the rest of the Harekaze crew.

The way the show handles its massive cast is the same way Mouretsu Pirates did. What I mean is that while a select few crew members get their time in the spotlight with character development and the like, the others who do not get as much are written well enough that they do not feel pointless. Like Mouretsu Pirates, it is all about how well they serve their role on the ship (Their appearance and personality are sweet bonuses). Every girl gets an opportunity to show that they belong on the crew (and show) and it would feel incomplete if one of them would be omitted. Not all the girls get as bright of a spotlight as the top players they all have their moment of glory be it adorable, comedic and/or badass. So even though it is a daunting identifying every single crew member after the first couple of viewings they all did a great job doing their part for the rest of the crew. The rest of the cast consist of higher ups in the navy with some super cool relatives from a particular family and veteran Blue Marines, the pros the Harekaze crew strive hard to become a part of, whose appearances are worth anticipating.

Captain Mike's back

Captain Mike. Mentored by the best.

Since there are so many girls to talk about I will briefly spotlight my favorites. First of all the good Captain Mike herself. Mentored by two great leaders before her in Captain Marika Kato and Commander Miho Nishizumi, Captain Mike used all their teachings in how to be a great leader and a badass when doing something awesomely reckless. She is also a simple character to understand, she made the best of a situation she was not prepared for and used all her mentor’s teachings as best as she could while learning new things along the way. She also worked her butt off to turn her crew into a yuri harem.

Rin and Mike ready for action

Rin. The Harekaze’s pilot.

Long story short Rin is the Ai Hoshimiya of the Harekaze except she does not wear a cute puppy cap.

.

Greatness

Kouko/Coco, aka Conspiracy Girl.

Second only to Captain Mike in terms of awesomeness. Coco’s reenactments are a thing of beauty and her secretary skills are not to be underestimated.

German girl awake

Wilhelmina. Token scene stealing foreigner.

Mi-chan. Foreigner girls in all/mostly female casts are usually guaranteed to be awesome. This Wunderkind is no different.

Navigation Personnel.png

These three. Why? Because they make me smile whenever they are on screen. No big reason, just their presence. They are not sexy, they just make me happy.

Macchi going for the kill

Surprise star.

Macchi. Initially she was that cool and sexy chick magnet who had Crow’s Nest duty because of her very sharp vision. As the show progressed she showed more of her mad skills and I was smitten.

Adorable trigger happy duo

The Cutastic Torpedoes.

As far as the yuri goes there are many ships on board the ship to ship. Readers who have seen the show can feel free to name their favorites.

Overall Hai-Furi/High School Fleet is a blast to watch with heart pounding excitement for the majority of it and some neat little breathers, as short as most of them are. The characters who are meant to be likable are (some take time to warm up to), the veterans are super cool, the animation is nice to look at and the soundtrack is great. The ship battles and rescue missions are exciting and the fanservice is acceptable but not overblown for the most part. Highly recommended for animeniacs who like seeing shows about cute and sexy girls kicking butt in military combat, aka “Milimoe”. As for other kinds of viewers, I dunno. Up to you.

So much anime of the season!~

The ride on this show was so intense. I still can’t stop smiling at how IGS handled the show. We were all set to watch cute girls go through ship training cutely, and probably there being character drama related to characters.

But we got heartpounding action, tearjerking drama, heartful laughter, and more!

I sitll htink comparing it to GuP feels a bit strange, but it’s true that GuP somehow made things feel as desparate at times. With High School Fleet (by the way, it’s still High School Fleet in Japan, Hai Furi is just the abbrev name, like “KonoSuba” etc. “Hai Furi” was also the teaser name for the show. It was revealed in the first episode the real title (at that point the site/twitter/etc all switched from “Hai Furi”).Just a small note) every battle was literally life or death. There was no room for “lol we got shot” (not to say that banter in GuP was unwelcome, just, it was very different). Because getting shot could result in the death/injury of anyone. That’s why I always have a hard time comparing it to GuP.

But, I do like the term “Milimoe”. Has a nice ring to it~

My favorite character was definitely Mei, her reaction when they said she would get to shoot all the torpedoes at once was total ❤ The entire crew was great though! Not one unlikeable character by the end. Took time to make Kuro-chan likable again (She wasn’t too bad at first), but they did it.

The show also just kept on surprising me. I’m usually pretty good at predicting things that are going to happen in a show, but HSF just kept on thwarting me. It’s great to be able to say that about a show~

I’m going to sincerely miss the Harekaze and her crew. I would like another season (because these girls can continue to grow into something even more), but I’m also not sure how they’ll get a plot going for it. Still, I would really like it. I feel like there’s so much more that can be done with this stellar crew that pulled through everything against all odds~

I feel sorry to see Harekaze no longer with the girls. I want she back with them in the next season. (But it seem to be impossible due to the story is hard to extend more)

I agree. I couldn’t believe this was my anime of the season until I finished my review where I literally broke down the reasons why. This was an amazing show and I really hope we get more, even like a movie or something would work. Milmoe does have a nice ring to it.

So many likable ladies on the Harekaze there were, even Kuro eventually got her groove back.

Time to tag past Milimoe shows.

I only make predictions when I feel like it as “being too predictable” as a complaint against a show or movie bugs me.

Would be cool to see a sequel should it happen. We will have to wait and hope for the best. As you said there are plenty of potential other storylines for a sequel.

Comparing to KanColle this anime is in a whole far different level! Its level’s beyond than good.

I’m so glad that I have followed this series. It will be a shame for a battleship fan to miss this anime.

BTW, plz don’t compare Hai-Furi to KanColle. I actually don’t see anything from KanColle that could be compare to Hai-Furi. The attacking tactics in Hai-Furi, handling circumstances of captain, animation and computer graphic (CG) along with yuri-ish are all amazing. KanColle? I see nothing from anime, no strategy, no logical story (The prevert admiral choose she as a main character just because he has a masturbated dream with her. You call that ‘make sense’?) and ugly CG, unnatural animation. The more I watch Hai-Furi, the more I feel sorry for my watching KanColle time.

(It said that KanColle will have the 2nd season… So… If Hai-Furi won’t have at least 3 seasons. It would be the biggest nightmare I have ever have.)

Seeing Mike and Moka reunited was the highlight of the last episode. Moka’s poor crew were starting to look uncomfortable the longer those two embraced! ^_^

Coco and Wilhelmina were a surprise (yet welcomed) pairing. She pined for her. PINED!!!

Marin found her inner crazy and infused the ship with her FIGHTING SPIRIT!

And the boarding crew made my year.

I hope we get a Blu-ray release. It will sit proudly next to my Bodacious Space Pirates set.

Most likely envious of the love the two share.

She even used Mashiro’s tsundere-ness to cheer her up as she waited for her beloved Wunderkind’s return.

Maron’s energy was an often appreciated power boost for the rest of the crew, especially Kuro.

      They were badass.

Definitely the best spot for it, next to perfection.

A truly satisfying show. Nice character development, epic sea battles, and some touching interactions. I didn’t see any of the promotions for the show, but apparently the action was much more hard core than expected.
As an aside, Japanese ships in WW2 used dye in their shells so they recognize their shots in an intense battle. I think technicolor water columns would have made the battles even more epic.

Good thing you saw it and didn’t miss out on something special.

Nice suggestion. Would have been rad if it were implemented to the battles but what we did get was still awesome.

I won’t rehash everything I said in my review, but Milmoe is the perfect term for what I was trying to describe in my review, so thank you! I’m totally going to reblog it with that add on. So yea, what can I say that hasn’t been said already…? Well, that Coco and Mi-chan reunion was quite touching despite being short and not getting to officially hug or anything. Also, that Mike and Moka reunion was too sweet! No doubt they are canon as well. My headcanon for everyone else is that the partner they disembarked with is their ship match, but who knows. All I know is these two I just mentioned were the top. I was sad we didn’t get to see badass Mama Mutani action, but as she said, her students did it for her. The final battle was as epic as to be expected. I’m going to really miss this show and I do hope we get more seasons or at least a movie. It was fun discussing this show with you each week, so thank you for your weekly coverage!

As I told cirno9fan I better go tag other Milimoe shows.

      Off-screen Coco X Mi-chan snuggling.

Mike rescued her girlfriend and it was glorious.

Those are indeed the top two couples on the show.

It is the sight of Big Mama Munetani getting ready and looking fetching while doing so that counts.

      Give Hai-Furi the KanColle treatment!

I enjoy covering these shows and discussing them with most of my readers.

I admit, I’m a world war 2 war machine and anime girl fetish. I really enjoy this anime just as I enjoy other animes by the likes of Girls und Panzer, Strike Witches and Kancolle. Hai-furi is definitely included on the genre of the other animes I previously mentioned which are girl dominated no boring male protagonist harem anime with world war 2 era war machines. The truth is I am a Japanese warship enthusiast long before Kancolle. So Hai-furi is now over and for now I’m waiting on another highly anticipated anime, the Love Live Sunshine! I also enjoy idol genre anime like Love Live franchise and the Love Live Sunshine is also coming soon so I hope OG also review that anime too. Like it’s predecessor, the Love Live Sunshine! is not actually a yuri anime but because it’s girl dominated ambience it’s highly susceptible to what we called “yuri undertones”. Hai-furi is definitely have plenty of yuri undertones of it’s own that’s why I really enjoy this anime.

This was an interestingly awesome show. The characters were cute and funny. The action scenes in these one are not the kind that I’m used to watching and I like the fast moving person-to-person combat, however this one’s actually not that bad 🙂

It’s sad that Harekaze immediately retired after safely bringing the girls back home. I guess they should rethink about giving these high school girls a very powerful ship next time. And also…where was the other Munetani sister? 😦 the one with the black robe huhu 😦 I was really waiting for her.

Hai-furi and Anne Happy were the only shows I watched this season. Both of them were good, watching them totally made my days. But if I was to choose, I’d say Hai-furi was my anime of the season, mainly because it involved a personal favorite factor of mine – military hardware.

Now that both of them had ended though, once again I am filled with the mixture of both contentment and sadness. Contentment because through all the hardships, the challenges, the girls had triumphed and their futures are ever brighter. Sadness, because now I will have to say good bye to them all. ‘Good bye’, how I hate that word, I much prefer ‘See you again, someday’. This feeling, I acknowledge its existence, but I can never get used to it. But that is life, there is no party that never ends, no ‘happily ever after’. I will carry on with memories of them both in my heart.

P/s: Salute to Harekaze, despite all the wounds she suffered in battle, she only gave in when all of her crew – her family – were safe and sound on dry land. If she is to sail the sea again with her family, the work involved will be a great task. But I believe she deserves it, she is as much a hero as her family!

I’ve seen the term ‘Military Moe’ used before. Milimoe’s a nice fusion of the two.

Anyway, the finale was spectacular and very exciting. When the reinforcements arrived, I knew that the Spee would be there but I was a bit surprised that Inspector Furushou was there too. Too bad Mafuyu didn’t join the party. Akeno and Moeka’s long-awaited reunion was absolutely touching. It was sad seeing the Harekaze sink after all the trials it went through. It will be fondly remembered by all who called it home for the duration of its journey.

I liked Akeno’s growth throughout this show from a girl who was unsure of her role as a captain to one who’s very worthy of the title. Mashiro’s growth was also admirable, going from being a by-the-books kind of person who couldn’t tolerate the way her captain was running things to someone who understood her captain feelings by the end of the show. Her icy demeanor was defrosted quite a lot as well. Furthermore, she tended to curse her bad luck for anything that went wrong but by the end, she stopped doing that. The rest o the cast were generally likeable with some standouts like Rin, Kouko, Wilhelmina, Tama, Mei, Macchi, Kaede and Maron. I don’t even despise Kuro anymore(thanks to Maron).

To conclude, Hai Furi is one of the better anime I watched this season. Heck, I see it as a strong contender for No.1 of this year.

      Milimoe!

Great finale capped with a sad farewell to a great vessel.

Captain Mike and Mashiro went through some wonderful character development throughout the show along with the others, the ones who got enough screen time anyway. Kuro was likable again near the show’s end, yes.

It is definitely one of the best.

I am not going to say much since I am going to write a full review eventually, but I agree that the characters were enjoyable although the mind control thing is somewhat cheesy, but lead to interesting battles. It’s too bad that Moeka is basically a background character, but hopefully there is a movie or a second season so we can see Akeno achieve her dream of becoming a Blue Mermaid.

The show takes place in the future and is all “sciency” so mind control fits in just fine. If you want cheesy then a mad scientist main antagonist is what was needed but nope. Knowing how I feel about the overuse of mad scientists as antagonists I had no problem with there not being a big bad on the show, just an epidemic of sorts.

Thank you for the detailed review! Hai-Furi was a unique military girls anime as well as being exciting.

The other Milimoe animes I have seen are KanColle and Strike Witches, but in those 2 the girls are recruited soldiers who aim to fight against some mystery alien enemies.
Harekaze’s crew are mostly ordinary students who happen to come across unorganized mutated rats infecting fellow ships and thus they are forced to fight. The girls don’t have any more objectives besides returning safely and saving infected fellow ships.
While not having bigger militaristic goals, Hai-Furi successfully depicted how the girls live their lives and cope with problems on the same ship, with more details and more members.

I admit I am still unable to fully recognize which member does what on Harekaze, but as you mentioned each of those minor characters is necessary to the ship. This was good.
The ones especially amazed me were Captain Mike, Rin-chan, Marikouji-san (the sonar girl, and was awesome whenever she got to fight on board), Maron-chan the engine girl, Koko-chan and Mi-chan. I’m glad that Koko x Mi ship was shown again when Mi-chan directly addressed Koko-chan before everybody else.
I hope it gets a sequel someday.

When I started to watch this anime it was like: “great…another loli-ship serie” and that was because I looooove Kancolle, so I had my doubts. And, then, after the first episode, couldn’t stop watching. It became my favorite anime of spring season!. They are so adorable, I’m in love with munetani (and her sister, the supervisor one xD), Momo, Wilhemina and Moka-chan. The opening was good but I couldn’t stop thinking about kancolle’s opening, sorry is just too similar. However, it was great, made me laugh 🙂

I watched the series + OVA and really liked it.

Mike x Moka were your cute childhood friends, but I prefered Mike x Shiro.

Coco x Mi-chan/Wilhemina were the highlight.

Speaking of Wilhemina: This anime showed once again that German girls have lots of wood in front of the cottage aka big breasts.

Tama x Mei were the perfect torpedo couple.

Macchi – and her harem – were always funny to watch.

The bath, shower and swimsuit scenes were another highlights and not too much.

The two cats were kawaii, but the fat tomcat was greedy – with rats and food.

Speaking of OVA: It was funny and – thanks to Coco x Mi-chan – kawaii and the ending with a new ship could be expected after what happened to the old one.
