281st G-View: Koukaku no Pandora: Ghost Urn

The Winter 2016 season did not have much in the way of yuri goodness when the schedule was revealed…and then this show popped up. Was it one worth the Nation’s time? Let us find out as we take a look at Koukaku no Pandora: Ghost Urn.

Pandora of the Crimson Shell

Alternate Title: Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn

Genres: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Yuri

Themes: Cyborg, Ecchi

Objectionable Content: High. Show contains lewd cyborg girl on cyborg girl yuri, cyborg nudity (Occasional and uncensored due to the cyborgs not having private parts) and busty babes.

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: In an age when large-scale natural disasters frequently happen all over the world, when cyborgs and autonomous robots are beginning to appear on the market in technologically advanced nations, and major world powers compete for technology and resources, the divide between rich and poor grows and the future for the poor looks bleak. In this transitional stage, everyone wanders around in a self-indulgent daze and the way out isn’t clear… This is the story of how two cybernetically enhanced girls meet.

Nene and Clarion, full cyborg pals

Despite the concept being an idea Masamune Shirow, the Ghost in the Shell guy, cooked up, which was then turned into a series, the connections to the aforementioned franchise are all superficial, meaning “Oh that looks like something I saw in GitS”. The actual story, as the show made clear very quickly, is one of “girl meets girl”…which also happens to contain a lot of futuristic technology and science-fiction babble, moments of philosophical jargon here and there and a terrorist plot.

The best way I can describe Ghost Urn’s narrative and pacing is that it is similar to the likes of Soul Eater NOT! and Hidan no Aria AA: The story does contain pretty cool action sequences but they are not the show’s primary focus. Like the aforementioned shows Ghost Urn is more about the daily lives of cute female protagonists interacting with zany people and eventually getting roped into a bigger life threatening plot by the show’s fourth quarter. Throughout the show’s run small portions of the main plot are slowly revealed until the big showdown is ready to roll. When not battling vandals and ruffians our leading ladies, Nene and Clarion (aka Cla-Ring) spend their time mingling and befriending the residents of the island locale and snuggling when alone. Also like the two aforementioned shows this one too has a terrorist plot. Lastly like the aforementioned shows Ghost Urn is a “manga lure”.

Since Nene’s ultimate goal is world peace there are several moments on the show where she and Clarion discuss topics that are important to possibly reaching the nigh impossible goal, such as difference between social classes, human rights, race and cyborg laws, etc. Interesting topics worth discussing outside of the show though they all play their roles well. They are not the main focus but are not pointless either.

Clarion kicking butt

The action sequences, when they do happen, are all pretty good. This is a message for yuri viewers who had watched Hidan no Aria AA before this one: The fights in this show are much better.

Takumi's cheapness

The show’s animation quality is an interesting one. When it flows naturally it looks pretty good. On the other hand as the above image shows the characters often make manga-like facial expressions during non-serious segments. Okay even during serious segments they have manga-faces and only when the situation is extremely dire do they stick to the default animation style. It is a choice that may chase away “animation nuts”, which would be a shame if that were the reason some would scoff the show but not unbelievable.

Nene gets the Pandora power

What is believable that would chase some viewers away is the ecchi content. Particularly the henshin sequences which is initiated the way the above image shows. Viewers will have to deal with the fact that Nene and Clarion power up by having Nene touch a compartment located near Clarion’s crotch. Not a problem for yuri fans who can handle moderate ecchi content but a likely nuisance for those who are bothered by loli fanservice or breast physics, though the girls do not look THAT young. Anyway keep on the lookout. Besides that the show also features beautiful women of different body shapes, sizes and races. Yup. That means dark-skinned women. Much appreciated.

Uzal swimsuit-bikini full image

My second favorite character after Nene just so happens to be a beautiful dark-skinned woman, codename Uzal. Why codename? That is something viewers will have to see for themselves. Some of the men and women do have darker skin so do not think they are all “tanned”.

As for the soundtrack, it is decent. The OP and ED are fine. nothing amazing but not bad either.

Besides my favorite sexy scientist the rest of the cast show off what kind of anime this is, a very quirky and zany show that is packed with strangeness around every corner. I am not joking. This show is weird, deliciously weird and hilarious. From beginning to end it is best not to question what happens because it all makes sense in a show like this. Bizarro world sci-fi at its finest. So yes, the cast are all delightfully quirky. Even the cliche big bad belongs despite being uber serious. It all makes sense in a head scratching way.

Nene and Clarion

Last but not least let us talk about the yuri duo of Nene and Clarion, two mechanically enhanced lesbian cyborgs (Lezborgs). Nene does a HORRIBLE job hiding her “more than friends” interest in Clarion. In fact it becomes romantic very quickly. Clarion takes a bit more time to develop similar feelings but they are there.

What makes both ladies lovable both separately and together is that alone they each have their talents to face the world with their heads held high, Nene’s cheerfulness, optimism and incredible perception hidden behind a wall false naivete and Clarion’s badassery. However, when the two are together…OP TO THE MAX! That is the power of lezborg marriage. Oh yes, they get married…sort of.

Overall, Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn is a wonderfully wacky sci-fi show starring lesbian cyborgs with a lot of futuristic technology and science-fiction babble, moments of philosophical jargon here and there and a terrorist plot. The world is interesting, the zaniness is dialed up quite a bit, the cast is racially diverse and delightfully quirky and our leading ladies get married. It has GitS references but is in no way related to it storyline-wise. Yuri fans who can handle ecchi content and enjoy wacky sci-fi that is not meant to be taken too seriously will find a lot to enjoy in this show. Casual viewers though…as usual it depends on how open-minded they are and their tastes.

This was definitely my show of the season (not that i ever hid it in my other posts), it pretty much hit on all my favourite contents: cute, yuri, comedy, sci-fi and that certain part in the final episode (my booty folder!) made me laugh much harder than i have in a long time. This is one of the few anime’s where i legit want another season.

P.S.Nene and Clarion definitely get a spot in my top yuri couples.

When this season started, I really only had this to watch, so I was disheartened, and didn’t really start watching it until a few episodes in… After that, this became the highlight of my week, it was so damn good… Its sad to see it end, Clarion and Nene are just so good together.
They left a few things unanswered, which in its own way is good because then it has a reason to go to a second season.
Most importantly though… I think everyone can agree, Nene X Clarion is close enough to canon that it can be described as such.

I belive this anime still have a long long long long long (OMGhost! it’s so long) way to go. I think it could have at least 3 or 5 seasons. (But I expect it more than number 3)

I see that Koukaku no Pandora has lighted your life, it does me too.
Thanks to this series, I have a full dying in happiness season. I had waited for every single tiny (whatever, don’t care) minute for an episode of this series. Now, it’s all done so I have nothing to regret; finally, I can rest in peace.
(Ah, please wake me up when the second season comes, ok?)

You won’t know if you don’t check it out. And if you did I dunno how much more blatant it has to be for it to convince you.

Ok, how about the term ‘yuri crush’? It is yuri, but, in order to attract more viewers, more buyers, more fans it has to pretend it is not yuri. The studio and author will announce this is not yuri or they avoid it. But viewers can easily find out the real relationship between characters.

(Sometime, money and fans are not the only reason. Maybe author just want to let fan find it by themself. It likes a emotion puzzle for fans from author. Who’s known? :)) )

Yeah, but that doesn’t happen, I’m pretty sure everything about it screams yuri, it is even announced by everyone of the staff.

    The show’s really good 🙂
And like you said, the action is much better than Hidan no Aria AA. I really like Uzal out of all the characters in the show. I’ve been waiting for her return every week 😛 Though she does appear as a hologram message from time to time, I wanted to see her in person, to be with the rest and not transparent. Too bad that only happened a few seconds in the last episode 😦
She’s a mysteriously distant hot genius 😀 (Probably the reason why I really like her.)

As for the MCs, they’re really sweet 🙂 that’s all I can say. Oh! And Nene’s really cluelessly fast in her advances LOL 😛

Disappointing yet awesome at the same time was Uzal’s last appearance in the season. Hopefully the show will SOMEHOW get a second season and she’ll grace our screens once more.

Nene and Clarion are awesome. Nuff said.

My favorite character is Nene. Seriously, I rarely like protagonist due to prefect everything. First she brings a fresh wind of making-love, watch ep 10. Second, she is not a stupid fake tsundere or pretending shy, in fact she is a light yandere. Even though I don’t like yandere pretty much, but slight yandere is quite cute. Last but not least, she has too many idea, personality clash in herself which helps the story has a lots of material to develop. For instance, she believe that money could buy peace, but in fact money did cause the chaos. I believe this factor will exploit for drama. Her personalities also are interesting too. We all see Nene as a pure angel? But we are also known what happen when Clarion is in danger. What if Claring dies? Ops, a fallen angel is coming. Run for your life dude!

(Nene also is a god of yuri, so just a bit further and we will have a second Madoka in comedy version. Even the cyborg has to fall in love with her.)

But yours choice also cool too. Ms.U is the third after the crazy T.

‘NeneClaring is the best couple in this season!’ that what I was, and, am going to say. Yep, totally awesome. And the last episode really a big comedy, love it dude :3 (Sorry, the last ep give me a big shock and laughing so I was a bit excited. I don’t know what to say yet… Ok, I need to be cool or I will die before the season 2 on air)

Have to admit that this show surprised me a bit, but I do find Nene and Clarion as a cute couple along with its lighthearted feeling. I guess the science fiction elements also make it interesting to watch as well.

I think you summed up my thoughts pretty well on this one, so all I have to add is that is that I’m looking forward to the movie whenever it’s released and subbed and maybe even a season 2. Ultimately though it I was content with it’s ending and it’s a great contender for Yuri of the year and Nene x Clarion def deserve a spot in the yuri hall of fame.

The struggle is real for me. I dropped it after a few episodes since I was getting too busy with Kindred Spirits, though right now, I just can’t get myself to pick it up again. Uzal was so sexy though… damn!

Thigh shots. Kurtz’s (and Takumi’s) ambitions were stopped by thigh shots. All that hard work just to open an encrypted folder. Epic fail to the max! Kurtz’s reaction was priceless.

This show was quite zany. Very enjoyable regardless. Nene and Clarion were great leads. A great couple.

  19. How many flipping years into the future and Jihadis are still blowing themselves up for Allah.

I really like some parts of the soundtrack. That one little song that plays where the commercials would start and played once in full so far (I’m on ep. 3) is quite calming and well composed. I find the ED oddly catchy. Wanna see more guns plz.

  20. Alright I’m finally finished.

Well after Dagashi Kashi and Erased ended up being disappointments for me, this is now contender for my favorite anime of last season (out of what I’ve actually finished so far, of course).

So how was it, in the end?

I think that when Shirow Masamune said in the afterword of the first volume of the manga that he was a bit out of touch, he was right. Now whether Rikudou Koushi is, that’s another story. I haven’t finished Excel Saga nor have I read the manga, so I don’t really know his style of humor. I would like to revisit this show after reading/watching their older works to completion and see what kind of comparisons and contrasts I can make then. This overall seems a lot lighter than their other works.

That being said, I think you nailed it. While I would give this show personally an 8/10, that’s only because some of the comedy really wasn’t that funny (it was amusing, but it didn’t elicit a lot of chuckles or actual laughs from me…then again most anime don’t do that and comedies are overall subjective). I did love the energy and zanyness of the show all the way through.

The plot took some time to pick up but when it did it was really good (though not super complex or anything), and I want to go buy and read more of the manga now that the show’s over.

I really do hope for a season 2 because Nene’s backstory clearly needs to be touched upon more.

But God, for the yuri…everything was worth it. Nene and Clarion are so so cute together and I can’t get enough of them. I squeed so many times when they were together, I just loved it so much. And Clarion is truly best Cat Prince. ❤

Overall, it wasn’t anything remarkable, but it was a lot of fun and I’m glad I watched this show. I’m also happy to have seen something in a cyberpunk setting that didn’t depress me.
