Atom GRRRL!! Review (NSFW)

My interest for the following kinetic novel came from it being an American themed gangster yuri story developed by a Japanese company, Cosmillica. This is the first of their titles to get localized. Was it worth anticipating? Let us find out as we take a look at Atom GRRRL!!

Note: A review copy of the game was provided by Sekai Project.

Update: The Steam Uncensored Patch has been released thanks to imouto works.

WARNING! The following game features raunchy content, foul language and sex scenes, not suitable for everyone. This review is also NSFW. Viewer discretion is advised.

Plot Summary: Returning to Las Vegas from studying abroad in the island nation of Yamato, Jessica L. Huster comes back to lead her gang “The 99th Floor”, only to find out her family is in trouble with the dominating mafia boss Big E.

Jessica and her friend Anna come together to face their troubles however Jessica’s cousin Very could turn out to be a “very” big problem for them.

Follow Jessica L. Huster as she returns home to the crime-ridden streets of America.

Very and her father Vince

An example of the kind of dialogue present in the game.

First of all let us talk about the initial controversy inducing content, the dialogue. Both the Steam and Denpasoft pages promoting the game contain plot summaries that clearly state its vulgar and raunchy content that is not suitable for “plreaders” (play-read) who find R-Rated media or Rated M games offensive. Basically dirty dialogue and humor regularly found in shows like South Park and Rick and Morty, movies like Ted or games like Grand theft Auto 5 or Bob Saget stand-ups. So yes the dialogue is offensive, however, it does not go over the edge as some would initially believe. The insults thrown are to be expected in a hostile environment filled with street gangs and the mafia. One of the main protagonists, Anna Smyth, is African-American. As one would expect from a dirty humor comedy she gets insulted with the “N” word. Not an insult directed toward her race, it is just because she is African-American. The does not cross extremely taboo borders like “rape” but there is little to no fluff despite there being some chibi CGs.

I mentioned several references because the game also contains several, specifically events that took place in the US, their relations to other countries, brands (McDonalds) and even religion. Surprisingly the religious usage in the story is legit not offensive at all, just twisted using mafia logic and some pro pre-marital sex arguments. There is even a joke directed at a certain president. Some of the US events play a minor part in the story but most of the references are used like Family Guy cutwaway gags minus the cutaways.

Long story short the dirty humor and references are nowhere near as bad as the Family Guy episode, “Screams of Silence” but “plreaders” with low tolerance are warned that the story holds very little back. The Cosmillica logo is drawn between a confederate flag and a “Mondo Burger” stack specifically to reiterate the crude content. The flag has no significance in the plot by the way.

Very threatening Dave.png

Very. Elegant yet lethal when pissed.

The story itself is an amusing romp involving money, guns, drugs, family lineage, catgirl sex slaves and our cast jumping from one crazy predicament to the next with each one getting crazier than the next. It is one of those stories where the characters are tied together and eventually bump into one another from beginning to end. This is not a deep and compelling story but it does contain character developing moments in either flashbacks or interesting conversations. None of the characters are saints but that does not mean they are without morals, values or codes of honor. They play dirty and act rude but have their moments of fairness. Oh and there are no American stereotypes to be found.

Apart from fades to black the entire game is fully voiced. There are no inner monologues. The story progresses naturally from beginning to end. The voice acting is good though there are some recording snafus with some voices sounding off-sync compared to others in certain scenes and some sounding softer. Thankfully the big players all sound fine but some of the minor ones need the music being turned down a bit to even hear them. Not game-breaking but worth mentioning.

Jessica and Anna, the leading ladies.

The character designs are fine. They cute girls are cute and the sexy ladies are sexy. Dave is a scrawny loser and Uncle Vince is a classic big buff mafia boss. The ladies look better in the CGs I would say. Speaking of the CGs, the backgrounds have an artsy style to them taking images found either online or “photoshopped” to look artsy, particularly of locations with a lot of decorations like those restaurants and fancy buildings with a lot of stuff hung around. It is an artistic choice that works I feel. It is, again, amusing. The soundtrack is a sweet mix of jazz, blues and rock. Pretty good stuff.

As for the main cast: It features the two leading ladies, the “shorty” Jessica L. Huster and her brah Anna Smyth. These two ladies are not afraid to get their hands dirty in the name of justice and protecting fighting for the poor but they do have a code of honor that is reflected from both girls’ family history. Anna comes off as the brains of the two being very well-informed and studios yet still easily irritated while Jessica is a brash but noble lass. The other two co-stars include the elegant yet jealous Cousin Very Huster and the sexy, very short tempered, kind to her allies but merciless to her enemies Big E.

Happy Birthday Big E

No. Not WWE’s Big E.

Big E's little friend

This Big E. Oh and worry not. Her “little friend” is not used in any h-scene.

The rest of the cast include Dave the shady yet desperate college student, Uncle Vince, cat girl sex slaves, some nameless assistants and civilians. A naughty, quirky yet amusing cast, just like the story.

Anna and Jessica getting it on.jpg

As for the sex scenes they range from “I want your body and your love” to “Give me more and harder!”. Most are standard yuri H fare but there is one in particular that is somewhat rough. Not in the “EWWWWWWW!” kind of way but one that leaves an “Uh huh…” impression. Basically they get the job done.

Last reason this game is amusing is because I think it is one of a kind. As far as I know there is no other game starring lesbians, in a gangster setting, in Los Angeles, California, made by a Japanese game company.

Overall Atom GRRRL!! is an interesting and amusing “plread” not suitable for everyone but for the interested who can take the heat it is worthwhile. The art style is neat, the characters are not upstanding citizens but not devoid of morals, the language is hardcore and some of the sex scenes range from soft to kind of rough. How the American setting is depicted is not as offensive as initial detractors made it out to be. It is a wacky and disgusting blend of craziness that makes for an amusing tale whose existence is welcome and there for “plreaders” with high tolerance and brave enough to take a look. The game is getting a sequel and I personally hope it sells well enough to warrant said sequel getting localized in the future.

Nice review, i enjoyed this game too, plenty of laughs and an unexpectedly sweet relationship arc with the two mains. I do find it kinda odd you never mentioned the VN’s relationship to Pulp fiction in that a large portion of the games events are lifted almost directly from the movie but over it’s own unique backdrop/characterization, i guess it was just too obvious to really mention?

The final sex scene was weird in yuri game for implying that jess and anna just had a class S relationship and that real love was with a man because japanese law does not consider homosexual sex to be sex. I do not want waifu in my yuri!
