OG’s Spring 2016 Anime Picks

Last season I was premature in saying it wouldn’t be fulfilling, though for the most part that has somewhat been truthful all things considered. This season however, I’m sure I’ll have plenty of shows to check out. How many I’ll actually cover depends on the content per episode. I’ll explain as I mention my picks.

Since this post is a premature one and there’s still time for changes to be made in the Spring lineup I will update it as we get closer to said season.

Update: Rage of Bahamut: Manaria Girls delayed. That sucks.

Picks are based on these two charts though one is kinda dated because we know “SHOW By ROCK!! Shorts!!” will air during the Summer.

Chart 1

Chart 2

Pan de Peace

Pan de Peace: Cute girls baking cute things. This has “shipping gold mine” written all over it.

OG coverage? Yes.

Baku-On

Bakuon!!: Looks like we’ll be getting the motorcycle Girls Club anime before the bicycle one. No complaints here. Hopefully this one will actually be about motorcycle girls and not deviate from it. “Looks at Rolling Girls”.

OG Coverage? Yes.

Sailor Moon Crystal 3rd season poster

Sailor Moon Crystal: Death Busters Arc. The first two seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal got mixed results but I personally enjoyed them despite their flaws. I was told that the Death Busters Arc is one of the best in the series. Here’s hoping the writers won’t have the remote on fast forward this time around and take time developing everyone, ESPECIALLY the legendary tag team.

OG coverage? When the legendary tag team debuts, they get yurirific screen time and whenever Sailor Saturn hits on Chibi-Usa…if it happens in this version.

Hai-Furi

Hai-Furi. I want to go into this anime as blind as possible because the concept of “women working as guardians of the seas” has so much potential to be “made of win”.

OG Coverage? Most likely.

Sansha SanyouUnhappy

Sansha Sanyou and Unhappy!: Two Girls Club shows. Nuff said. The former has a guy roaming around but I won’t cry foul unless absolutely necessary

OG Coverage? Yes.

Kuma MikoFlying Witch Volume 3 Cover

Kuma-Miko: Girl Meets Bear. It’s anime starring a miko and a bear. I repeat. It’s an anime starring a miko and a bear. IT’S AN ANIME STARRING A MIKO AND A BEAR!

Flying Witch sounds like a lot of fun show to watch.

OG coverage? The shows look fun to watch but I don’t think fans will be interested in my covering them. Plus I don’t know if they’ll have enough material to discuss here, not yuri material per se but Girls Club material.

Onigiri Poster

Onigiri: Another show about sexy beasts in a fantasy/medieval setting based on a game with lots of them. Most of the ones I’ve seen ranged from decent to enjoyable so I think this one will be the same. That or it’ll be like Bikini Warriors which works too.

OG coverage? Depends.

Aikatsu Stars

Aikatsu Stars: Heard this was going to be a new series and it was not necessary to have seen the first series to enjoy. If that’s the case I’ll try a couple of episodes and see if I can fit it into my packed schedule.

Usakame is another Teekyuu! spin-off and will be more of the same so even though I’ll watch it there’s very little material to discuss here weekly.

I didn’t split the shows between MUST WATCH and Curiosities this time because as readers can see, I’m packed. Add to that the fact that I have some upcoming Yuri Visual/Kinetic novels besides FLOWERS to play and review and you can tell I have plenty of material to keep the blog active. Not to mention something historic will happen on February 27th, 2016.

    Must see:
    Hai Furi
    Pan de Peace!
    Unhappy
Kagewan – Shou (First season was amazing, definitely planning on watching this)
Usakame:- Have good hopes this will be much better than the other spinoff

    Interested:
Aikatsu Stars – Probably “Must See”. Should really be up there. I couldn’t get caught up with the original series (I tried hard though! Made it within ten episodes, but things just didn’t work out), but I absolutely loved the first season, and so I’m ready for another season!
Bakuon!! – There’s another bike manga that I would rather have, but that’s only because I know more about that manga than this one. But this will probably be a great watch overall.
Gekidol – I love the theatre. But hesitant how this will work out
Kuma Miko – Seems pretty interesting from the raws I looked at
Mayoiga – Seems like it should be a really great ride! But “must watch” is really only saved for stuff I am positive I’ll enjoy
Onigiri – Game had decent levels of yuritext, so decent hopes in this one
Manaria Friends – I have not seen the anime, I don’t play the game, but it seems like it might be fun
    Kiznaiver – Seems interesting

No go (barring if I hear favorable things from others):
12 Sai – not my thing
Battle Spirits – Not my thing
Beyblade – Not really into this
Sailor Moon – I’m not a very big fan of the series. I enjoyed the manga when I read it, but I wouldn’t go back and read it
Concrete Revolution – Didn’t see the first season, so no reason to watch this
    Duel Masters – Not interested
Buddyfight – Not Interested. Already loaded with Yugioh to cover the majority of the shows here
Asterisk 2 – Didn’t wathc the first, not watching the second
Gyakuten Saiban – Would rather play the games whenever I finally get to that
Jojo – Not my sort of show.
Kidou Senshi Gundam – Not a gundam fan, especially not the old style gundam
Kyoukai no Rinne 2 – Didn’t watch the first
Macross – Have only seen some of the very first Macross, no reason to start watching this now (barring favorable things of course)
Magi – Didn’t watch the previous one
Pripara 3rd Season – Unless I miraculously get all caught up, not happening
Sansha Sanyou – What I saw in the raws tells me I do not want to watch this. I coudl be wrong, but I’m not using my anime watching time for something that I”m 90% certain i won’t want to see)
Shounen Maid – Not my thing
Super Lovers – Not my thing
Ushio to Tora 2 – Another example of not seen the first season
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu – this one has more possibility of becoming an actuality than Pripara, as I’m not horribly behind. But If I don’t catch up, not happening
Nijiro Days – NOt my thing
Hakouki – Never saw the appeal in it. Unless someone says it’s at least as good as Yona of the Dawn, pass
Luluco – I just feel like it’s not going to be something I’ll care for. Trigger could surprise, but I don’t plan on watching it.

    Maybe:
Anything not above. I end up checking out a lot of shows that I don’t end up watching, so whatever’s left is whatever I just don’t have an opinion on yet.

Looks more “packed” than Winter has been, at the least. Still seems a bit low on numbers for me. But, there are lots of shows that I never know and might really end up liking. And of course, shows that get announced out of nowhere.

Whenever I make seasonal picks I don’t pay much attention to other shows apart from the ones mentioned and a few others that get my attention.

This season for example has the Phoenix Wright anime. Everything else I’ll just have to wait and see what you and others I trust have to say.

So you said Aikatsu 3 is a new series and not a continuation. Come back tomorrow and we’ll discuss it.

  3. I’m not as optimistic as you about all those Girls Club shows since I don’t know anything about them barring what you said, but I’ll probably watch them anyway. It seems that we finally have a season without sequels so I can play catch up, that’s kind of nice. Well except Jojo but that’s a whole nother kettle of fish I’m gonna have to deal with on my own. XD

I am going to give Infinity arc a chance. With the new production crew I’m hoping they’ll do it justice (I haven’t read the original manga arc, but I’ve been told it was the best arc just like Ikuhara’s Super series is considered by most to be the best season of the 90s anime). Also the character designs finally look tolerable to me. But yes, development and smooth pacing is absolutely critical here, because the storyline of this arc/season centers around the Inners and Outers conflicting on their ideals. It’s a lot like Symphogear G/GX and Madoka (Oriko Magica spinoff especially) more than anything, honestly. So if they fuck this up, there’s gonna be Hell to pay. But by bothering to get a new director and writers/animators/character designer, I have reason to believe/hope that Toei won’t be so careless. I hope so anyway.

Oh trust me, the Chibiusa x Hotaru moments will be absolutely plentiful. Naoko shipped them even harder than Ikuhara did, given that she hated Helios’ character design. I would say they’ll probably get more in the next arc though.

Like last time when it comes to Sailor Moon Crystal I’ll be watching it blind without paying attention to comparisons to past iterations nor diehard fan impressions.

    Must see;
    – Pan de Peace: The manga run in the new Monthly Comic Cune magazine and some Japanese yuri blog giving a good rating, so get ready for the yuri bread.
    – Unhappy?: Maybe will be same level with GochiUsa and Japanese yuri blog giving the manga a good rating.
    – Hai-Furi: Atto (Non Non Biyori) is in charge of character designs and setting seems in the all-girls school.
    – Bakuon!!: About school girls motorcycle, this will probably be a great watch.
    – Shingeki no Bahamut – Manaria Friends: director and series composition is Takafumi Hoshikawa (Candy Boy) but the anime seems short because has been announced will be a part of Tokyo MX’s “Ultra Super Anime Time” programming block.
    – Sansha Sanyou: I know there are a lot male character, but anime adaptation maybe went a different direction and the anime only focus on relationship between girls.
    – Aikatsu Stars: This is a new series and I hope the yuri element will be increased like Precure this year (Mahou Tsukai Precure).
    – Gekidol: Seems interesting and this will probably be a great watch overall.

Hopefully despite its short length Manaria Friends will still be effective.
I guess I’ll take both yours and cirno9fan’s recommendation and try Aikatsu Stars.

It looks like this season is going to be pretty good. I’ll try to watch some of it, depending on the free time i’ll have on the upcoming months.

Why don’t you cover the non-yuri anime weekly on Anime Island? It would be a way of talking about some anime that dont involve yuri but are fun.

Also, what are the best shows from this past season? I think i’ll be on vacation in April, i want to marathon some of these.

      Do your best.

I’m packed with the Spring anime and yuri visual novels so I doubt I’ll do much on Anime Island other than occasional reviews. That site hardly gets any attention anyway. I don’t blame people. I hardly do anything there and I’m better at talking about yuri media and Girls Club shows anyway.

Aokana, Koukaku no Pandora, Oshiete! Galko-chan and “Mahou Shoujo Nante li Mou Desu Kara”

Non-yuri shows: ERASED, Divine Gate, Dagashi Kashi, HaruChika and maybe “Luck and Logic”

I haven’t watched any anime for almost a year now since my 1 TB and 750 HDDs are already full huuu. I just cannot part with my beloved yuri shows. Add to that my to-buy list of yuri games/visual novels (and tuition fees, yeah). So I’ll leave everything to you for my future to-watch list!

It seems that Spring looks to be a pretty good season as there is four shows that I plan on watching. As always, it seems that the backlog keeps getting neglected since I still haven’t finished Sailor Moon Crystal and there is already a sequel. Maybe someday…
