Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R Episode 1: Komugirrection(?)

In recent years entertainment media worldwide have been on this “nostalgia boom”, bringing back old series and giving them reboots, sequels and even retcons. I can understand series like Sailor Moon, DBZ, Berserk and Digimon 1st Gen coming back…but has there been an outcry for a Nurse Witch Komugi-chan return? Not that I’m aware of. But here we are, talking about the premiere episode of a Komugi-chan anime reboot. Was it the “Komugirrection” fans hoped for or did it remind me of why I never got into the series the last time I watched it? Let’s find out.

Komugi 2016

I’ll give 2016 Komugi this much. She doesn’t as annoying as she did in her early OVA run. Oh and in case of newcomers to this blog, Japanese anime CGI doesn’t bother me as much as many other internet anibloggers I know. Basically the musical number was fine.

Komugi's mom

Sorry but I’m so used to anime protagonists being orphans that seeing one whose parents are both still among the living continues catching me by surprise. Hopefully the show won’t pull a “cerebus syndrome” later and axe them for no good reason.

Kokona Saionji

So we have Komugi, the girl who will rely on her MC powers to get ahead in life as she’s a typical “average person”. Her best friend Kokona is a typical “little miss perfect”.

Yo

Ah. I see this show has a resident T.K. Okay. I dig that…yo. Wonder how many animeniacs will get the T.K. reference?

Suddenly shooting stars in the daylight…

Reverse Trap

This must be the reverse trap I read about in the plot summary. She pulls off the pretty boy look far better than Goober-ner Double H at least. Her magical girl form’s nice but I need to see more of her in that form to decide whether she induces raging otaku boners or not. Maybe she’ll get shipped with Komugi based on the few tidbits I noticed? Too soon to tell.

tough teacher

I demand a beach episode featuring this teacher. I want to envy then drool over her glorious six pack.

I like Kokona’s manly chauffeur.

Usa-P

Usa-P, an amusing mascot character.

Local idol Komugi-chan

I was reminded of Wake-Up! Girls and Locodol watching this segment. That’s a good thing for me.

Filming

And this reminded me of Milky Holmes, though I’m sure to diehards’ dismay it was the third season.

I see blurring of roaches remains a gag in certain anime with female leads.

Camera monster

A camera monster is the first opponent. Right on.

Nurse Witch Komugi-chan henshin

I liked the narrator’s explanation that the Nurse Witch henshin took exactly 0.02 seconds in real time as if to give a reason for why villains never attack during one outside of parody…even though this show has kind of been a parody so far.

Yoru no Yatterman reference

Since the camera monster’s power is to turn stuff into “embarrassing stuff”, is this Yoru no Yatterman gag supposed to mean that anime was embarrassing? I guess I’ll wait till the Blu-Rays come out and see that version to find out.

Anyway the rest of the episode panned out as one would expect.

Overall the show’s premiere accomplished what I had hoped: Not remind me why I disliked the original series of OVAs. In short, it was an alright premiere and I’ll continue covering this show for now.

I’d say it was embarrassing. Had a good start, but squandered it all a little over halfway through.

As I said, mildly entertaining. It wasn’t “:DDDDD’ but I did have a smile through most of it. The mascot really reminded me of Kyubey xD Especially with that curse bit just casually thrown in after she had already become a magical girl

Hopes on it not going to what I’m pretty darn positive it’s going to, because that’s what always happens in these things! And I think it happened in previous Komugis too. The childhood friend, I’m speaking of. Kinda looked like Tsukino was mad at Komugi for talking to Yuuto (or whatever their names were). I really really hope we’re not in for a pointless love triangle like that…

My expectations were low to begin with so for it to have a decent start is a step in the right direction.

      An obvious “Kyubey’s contract” spoof.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they went that route but since this is a magical girl parody from the looks of it they may pull a swerve on us.

It’s interesting thta main characters are allowed to have not one, but two parents. It’s almost like they’re real people with ordinary lives. The fact Kogumi’s parents run a clinic causes me to think of Bleach. At least she isn’t woken up by her father trying to attack her every morning.

Why did you not like the original OVAs? Then again I never saw the series it was being a parody of SoulTaker. Still could be interesting how much more different that they will be compared to those old OVAs from over a decade ago.

This was interesting. the episode got better as it went on. I might continue it but I think my magic girl show for the winter will be precure which starts in February.

Did get the TK reference best guy especially if you watched the OVA.

I was satisfied with the first episode but I hope that brown haired guy doesn’t interfere much with the gals :3

oh that “outcry for a Nurse Witch Komugi-chan return” that you heard? Yep that’d be me yelling at the corner over here XD

Ha ha I’ve actually enjoyed the OVA series very much when I watched them (the dub version) a few years ago. I don’t know if that made a difference but I watched right after finishing The SoulTaker, and seeing some of those serious characters from that horror action series being parodied to a ridiculous degree was extremely amusing to me.

I did cringe slightly when I realized that this reboot seems to be an attempt at a “serious magical girl” show rather than another parody as before. I guess I’ll stick around for now and see how it turns out.
