271st G-View: Hidan no Aria AA

Keep in mind while reading this review that it was written by someone who had not seen the main series it is from. This is Hidan no Aria AA.

To better explain my thoughts I will be comparing the show to Soul Eater NOT! as both have similarly structured.

Hidan-no-Aria-AA

Alternate title: Aria The Scarlet Ammo Double A

Genres: Action, Comedy, Girls With Guns, Yuri

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 8/10 (Favoritism), 7/10 Overall.

Plot Summary: Akari Mamiya is a freshman and E-rank student who looks up to her upperclassman, the S-ranked Aria H. Kanzaki. They both attend Tokyo Butei High School, which employs the “Amica” system, allowing an underclassman to train alongside an upperclassman. Akari is determined to be paired with Aria.

Akari's dream

Classic serious mentor and eager protege team.

The best way to describe Aria AA is that its concept is similar to that of Soul Eater NOT!: Both spin-offs star a group of girls who are part of a class that is lower than their main series counterparts. Both feature cameos from the main series whose roles range from co-protagonists, relevant side characters to “hey, I’m part of the main series” appearances. The female cast of the main series play more important roles compared to the guys. Both focus more on the girls having fun, occasionally engaging in action scenes of varying intensity, getting character developing segments while snippets of the main conflict are scattered throughout culminating with the antagonists executing their grand assault in the last quarter of the show. That is Aria AA in a nutshell.

Raika's escape

Raika’s character development is one of the more interesting next to Akari’s.

The fun segments are standard Girls Club fare with each girl being a classic anime archetype in both GC and Yuri shows.

Raika vs Kirin

Gunfights and hand to hand combat are what viewers can expect in Aria AA.

The action scenes range from fast and cool to slow and methodical. The former get the job done in pumping viewers up while the others have varying results. Some enjoy them while others do not as they prefer all action scenes to be fast and cool. This brings us to the main conflict of the show. While I personally enjoyed both shows and gave them an 8, after thinking about more they are still 7 shows when looking at them objectively. Having said that the conflict of SEN’s was more dire and had more intense moments than Aria AA’s. Both pale in comparison to their main series counterparts (or so I heard from Hidan no Aria fans. Soul Eater’s is obvious) but they get the job done of providing an entertaining season finale endgame. Do not expect anything heart wrenching in Aria AA, just take it for what it is worth.

Aria looking cool

I love Aria’s serious stare, especially the close-ups.

The animation quality differs in the televised broadcast. Most of the time it is good stuff but there are a few occasions where it felt like the writers did not put much effort. Thankfully those are few and far between and can be easily remedied in the blu-rays. The soundtrack is enjoyable and the OP and ED are catchy.

Team Akari

The main quartet from left to right: Shino, Akari, Kirin and Raika.

Before getting to the main event let us discuss the main six. Yes there are four pictured here but the main protagonists are Akari and Aria. As mentioned above each of the girls has an anime archetype: Shino is a caring ojou-sama with an initially hidden but quickly revealed “other side”, Akari is the “looked down upon newbie with a great hidden potential”, Kirin is an elegant fangirl and Raika is a cool tomboy with a feminine yearning. Aria is the badass senpai who is super serious but warms up to Akari and friends’ company. I assume she is the same in the main series but since there is also a male protagonist in that one and there are several other girls…Anyway the cast of Aria AA is pretty cool with some initial jerks quickly becoming likable in time. Akari however, can upset some, which I will explain in a bit. The girls from the main series, Aria, Riko and Hiina being the three most recurring of the ones who show up, all rock.

Shino making her Amica proud

Shino’s love deserves respect…and pity.

Last but not least the yuri, which Aria AA’s beats SEN’s by a mile. Let me put it this way, apart from Aria and Akari to an extent, every other girl who forms part of Team Akari is gay. I do not mean strong subtext gay…these girls crave female flesh and their sexual preferences are no secret…except to Akari (and Aria in a sense but that is mainly because she does not show an interest in romance in AA). This is why Akari is somewhat annoying to some yuri fans. While her character arc and development are good, as a yuri harem lead…she is not one of Iono-Sama’s best students. One of the more important lessons, besides being awesome, that the “Iono-Sama Institute of Chick Magnets” teaches is that a disciple must either be aware of their power or at least be aware that they have some kind of charm over girls and women around them. Basically if the disciple is oblivious to their lesbian charms then they are not true Iono-Sama disciples. Akari Mamiya is one such person. In short she is an oblivious ditz. I personally did not mind as I liked her. I just felt it was worth mentioning. On the bright side, as one of my peeps mentioned, Akari’s “I want Aria-sempai to notice me” dedication is yurirific enough. The other lesbians are awesome, there is another disciple who IS worthy and we even get a canon couple. Said couple are the best characters on the show, or at least steal it every time they are on screen.

Overall Hidan no Aria AA is average but quite enjoyable. As a Girls Club show with canon yuri content it is pretty good. It looks good, the girls are fun, range from cute and their developments are neat. However, the action scenes are mixed and the main conflict, while it had a decent setup was underwhelming. The best advice I can give to Hidan no Aria fans is that Aria AA is different but still has a bit of what makes the main series enjoyable. Take that for what it is worth. Viewers who want to see girls with guns occasionally kick ass and both attempt and successfully snuggle with one another, this show will please. As for everyone else, I dunno.

The best thing for a spin off is to be still accessible to people who haven’t watched the original which I feel this anime is I have not seen the original Aria and have no present interest in doing so. I don’t mind Akari’s obliviousness due to the fact she is so absorbed into making Aria-senpei notice her. That being said, I’d like to imagine Shino and Urara will eventually spend so much time together that they forget their original goal, having developed feelings for each other.

      Neither do I.

I don’t mind Akari being oblivious because she’s a neat character. Also my yuri harem protagonist bias.

I believe most nation members ship Shino and Urara together.

I know if I never watched the final episode of the orgiinal anime, iw ould have enjoyed this more. I want Aria and Akari to get together, but the anime made it seem really like Aria would end up with that one guy.

I wish I knew nothing about the original Aria…

Outside of that, it had a lot of great points (mostly in the yuri), but I just couldn’t get behind the action scenes. it’s not about being “slow”, just being “uneventful” or very low on tension. You can have an incredibly slow battle be more intense than a battle with swords blazing and magic getting flung all around the place. Heck, Log Horizon had A LOT of exposition during combat, but the exposition made things more tense. It’s how they presented things. The final battle with Aria was decent, but nearly every other “big” fight just felt so flat. Especially the mech girl. For all that talk of “wonton destruction”, she just sat there shooting at nothing almost the entire time -_-

I will say now, I wanted Aria and Akari to be together from pretty early on. But that knowledge I had of the original anime just would not let me believe in it as anything but a disappointment to be. I am all for Shino and Urara getting together. And maybe having foursome fun with the twins sometimes. I don’t think Shino would work out well with Akari. Definitely not Urara either.

But I can’t get away from that knowledge, and feeling that it will all amount to huge disappointment.

Would love for l/n readers to say “Aria and the MC aren’t really likely to get together at all”. Because then I could enjoy it like I enjoy DASTL. because it’s 100% obvious shidou will never end up with Origami. But that won’t fix the mediocre story/action scenes. Still, I would have been able to enjoy it a lot more.

You feel similarly to how I felt watching Rolling Girls. Also I can imagine others who disliked the show having similar gripes as your person, albeit with less Akari bashing.

Once again, you’ve hit the nail on the head and said exactly what I’m thinking. I’ll elaborate in my own review very soon, but I will just say here that I believe the yuri was this show’s saving grace. If it hadn’t had it, I’m not sure I would’ve enjoyed it as much especially since I was a fan of the original. However, putting the original aside, on its own this show was decent in terms of being understandable to those who didn’t see the original. As you’ve also said, Raika and Kirin were the best couple and I definitely ship Urara and Shino. I didn’t mind Akari too much, but can’t say I found her very interesting other than her mysterious abilities. I loved Aria of course, as I loved her in the original as well. Overall, this was decent for the type of show it was and definitely a nice addition to shows relevant to the nation.

Another yuristatic anime. I love that Akari is being chased by two rich sexy girls. I am so envious of her. Apparently, this show that its own version of Hibikek’s Natsuki and Yuuko.

Kirin and Raika is the best couple this year 😀

I enjoyed this series, but I think it could have been a lot better (they didn’t show that Kyouchikuto is a yurifag).

I can’t see Blu-ray sales this show doing well enough to get another season (even though I really want it to happen, hopefully long-term sales is good) and they gave the anime an original ending where Aria-Akari start to work together, but we can still see Akari and her harem in the manga.

The manga sales is good, so this series will be long series like Saki 😀 and manga volume 11 will be released on January 25.

At least it got the job done of attracting more readers to the manga, which I most likely will do due to the odds of the anime selling well being slim.

I was not so happy with the ending sure they fight and in the end Aria wins( had no idea that this was a spinoff that time) and A little happy that the probability of shino and urara ship sailing existed and I felt RaiKiri had very little or wait almost no screen time in the last episode. When I got to know that this was a spin off and that the original anime had a lot of Harem(which is not my taste) I was a little disappointed but on the bright side I got to know this ne ws after the finale…. Thanks a lot OG-Man I started to watch this series because of your reviews.. Thumbs up to you.>
Plus can you give us a list of yuri animes(where soft yuri is not included) which would be coming up in 2016 ?
2014- Sakura Trick and Akuma no riddle (not sure if its 2015) 2015- we got yuri Kuma and Valkyrie drive
wonder what will we get in 2016…

The finale was underwhelming but the yuri more than made up for it.

No idea. An answer to your question is pending. You’ll have to drop by throughout 2016 to find out which shows are more yurirific than others.

Oh ok Is there any source which tells us how a particular anime has fared, financially or in popularity as that would indicate the possibility of getting more seasons ?? Like if Valkyrie Drive does very well it might get a season 2 another example is tokyo ghoul re, which is in lava now(due to its popularity and amazing arcs ) will give us another sequel.. I know it’s unlikely that those sources are available but I thought I might ask..

First of all, Happy Holidays to you.

About the final battles; Suimitsutou’s very nutty and her style of fighting reminded me of this very annoying monster.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EPWqkCperI. I understand Kyo’s embarrassment. The AA battle was good and it was nice of Aria to show a bit of trust in making that rookie her Amica. Hope she doesn’t regret it.

I liked this anime. Sure, some action scenes were underwhelming but it’s not like it was all about the action, just like SEN.

RaiKirin is a great pair, of course. Shino and Urara are a good pair too but for now their attention is on our oblivious protag, Akari. Speaking of, I was pegging Akari to be a Iono-sama candidate but I didn’t know that she had to be aware of their feelings, so farewell candidacy. Shame.

Aria’s still a cool cat. I think she’s a bit cooler here than in the main story (obviously due to zero harem hijinks). At the end of the show, I was thinking that, just like Shino and Urara, Shirayuki and Akari could get together and think of some schemes to keep Aria and Kinji separated but just like the former two, their plans will be all for naught.

It’ll most likely be a troublesome yet rewarding partnership.

      True that.

Out of pity I’ll nominate her anyway. Let it not be said that I am not generous.

Shirayuki taking Akari in and teaching her the art of “hunting your prey” would be quite interesting. Shino would be conflicted in that she’d have more time with Akari but Akari would also be learning how to win the heart of another girl.

    yuri-wise, Raika x Kirin is the best part of the show hands down. However, there’re also two characters i really like which greatly contributed to my enjoyment of it. First one is Urara, for some reason I really like her. Oh, her looking gorgeous in that dress certainly didn’t hurt either. The other is Kyouchikuto. I just think she’s a really cool villain… i wouldn’t want to take a sip of the tea she serves me though. ^_^;

Urara is hot. No doubt about it.
Kyo’s an interesting and seductive villain. Heard she too is gay in the manga but after what we saw from her here should we really be surprised?

In my opinion, I really liked this show overall. Though one issue I kept on finding with some of the Hidan No Aria fans is that they kept on thinking this show was a sequel instead of a spin-off, which I found kinda annoying in my opinion.
