270th G-View: Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!

Here we are once again looking over another season of what is considered one of the most successful yuri series to date in terms of televised episodes. How did the third season fare compare to the previous two and the Nachuyachumi specials? Let’s find out as we take a look at Yuru Yuri San☆Hai!

Here are the reviews of the previous seasons and coverage of the Nachuyachumi specials.

YuruYuri 3 signs

Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Yuri

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Yuru Yuri 3 does not need a plot summary because like its predecessors it is more of the same: Cute girls doing cute things while fawning over each other. Having said that this season somehow managed to do what I thought could not be done, be funnier and more yurirific than all previous seasons and OVAs. For a show whose mainstream popularity is how it successfully balanced good comedy with reasonable amount of yurirific content it is an impressive feat. I dare say that time they almost crossed the line…readers who also saw the show will understand why I said “almost”. So yes, the comedy and yuri are stronger than ever this season and it is the best of both worlds for mainstream and yuri audiences.

Rise X Nana

While the main quartet (Amusement Club) and the super seconds (Student council 4) are all at the top of their games this season and the developments each of them got individually and with their strongest potential soul mates were wonderful, the show’s best segments were the ones centered around the tertiary characters (relatives and acquaintances), at least the ones that got relevant screen time. Sorry Nadeshiko. Oh yeah and as a treat for the hardcore shippers, there were also some “experimental” ships.

I initially thought this was not worth mentioning as the season’s humor is pretty good but some fans felt the season was good but not as great as the previous two because the segments were not as zany or crazy. This is true. YY3 segments are more grounded and focus on the slice of life aspect of the series whereas previous seasons switched it up with different settings like anime conventions and fantasy lands. YY3 occasionally goes to fantasy lands but nowhere near as often as 1 and 2.

yuru-yuri

Despite changing animation studios the show’s quality remains top notch though personally I enjoyed the first and second seasons’ OPs more than this one’s. Frankly the only part of the song that gets me pumped is the first 12 seconds and near the end when it repeats the OP’s beat.

Crimson Paradise

Chitose’s Crimson Paradise/Vision was at full power this season. The beauty of it though was that it was used sparingly to make the few times Chitose felt bliss all the more blissful.

As mentioned above the yuri this season was the strongest it has ever been in the series’ televised run. Saying more than that would spoil the magic for the few fans who have yet to pick it up.

Overall Yuru Yuri 3 is arguably the best the series has to offer by far. Some would say 2 is better or even 1 but I am sticking with 3 as the creme de la creme. This review was short because there is little I can add that I have not already mentioned in previous seasons. A must watch for YY fans, casual yuri fans and animeniacs who enjoy Girls Club shows with lots of humor. For viewers who are not fans of the series but have seen the previous ones, maybe this will be the season that will click…maybe.

This season’s “shipping episodes” really hit their mark. Whether it was Ayano’s date with TOUSHINO KYOUKO, Tomoko finally getting some Akane cuddle time, or even Akari using her stealth flirting powers on the rest of the Amusement Club, it was all good.

Another highlight was the Matsumoto “Cute Mute” Rise cold open, where she managed to satisfy every main character in the show in mere minutes! (that looks a lot dirtier when you write it out…) And don’t think I missed that little nod in the last episode! There’s no way Nana-sensei would spend the night at the school, exploding without Rise.

I think I finally know why Namori-sensei doesn’t let the girls get any older. A high school aged Akari with her Stealth-Yuri powers fully under her control could take out a chunk of Japan’s female population!

The shipping was very strong this season.

That remains the best segment of all three seasons. I loved it THAT MUCH! To me Dr Boom-Boom’s appearance was like when Akane and Tomoko popped up. In any case much love for the Doc getting one last appearance.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

    Superb in every aspect. Every episode was amazing. My only issue is that they didn’t do chapter 94 ;_;

Still, it was amazing. Easily aoty for me.

Aside from episode 11, that was pretty much a perfect season.

Personally I gave this a 8/10, which is a very good score, but this season was not as insane or frantic as the first two seasons, which was why I loved those so much. It felt like the comedy was less focused on and more towards the slice of life stuff. Doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, but I did miss the older zaniness the show had.

I actually liked the more laid back atmosphere of this season. It’s more Slice-of-Life than slap-stick. It gives us more time to relax with the characters being sweet to each other. Akari and Yui’s scenes come to mind. ^__^

I get where he’s coming from. He enjoyed the more insane and out there stuff like Super Saiyan Akari and the Snow White play.
Maybe more Sakurako-Man would have made him extra giddy.

Fair enough. I can see you being disappointed by the lack of a convention segment, Super Saiyan Akari and stuff like that.

During this episode when they were working on the manga, I was thinking ‘oh yeah, they didn’t go to Comiket this time around.’ Those were some of the best parts of the previous seasons.

Although, we did get a deredere side of Kyoko, and considering how rare that it, I’d say it was very close to making up for it.

Another good season of one of the best yuri shows.
Personally, I didn’t feel that they upped the yuri content, but I did enjoy the fact that they did more mix and matching this season than the others. We got to see girls like Yui and Ayano together which was interesting to see! That’s kind of why I enjoyed this season more than the others. Also, that president episode was way too cute for it’s own good.

Honestly enjoyed this season much more than the previous 2. Would give it a 10/10 but I’m always a high rater so maybe a 9 or 8?

My favourite part is how much Sakurako stepped up her game this season and also how much Ayano has advanced in her chase for kyouko. Really have to say how much they stepped up and I will be waiting ever so patiently for the next season.

Same here. I enjoy a lot of the stuff I watch and sometimes it comes off like I am too nice with shows for my own good. Oh well. I can’t help it. I don’t get as upset with television as I do with other geeks and nerds.

      Exactly.

Funny how you mentioned this, because I think this is exactly the same reason why I like S3 more than the previous season.

I watch the show to laugh my hairy tooshie off and see cute girls craving each other and snuggling. The setting does not matter to me. This season just so happened to please me more than previous ones.
