260th G-View: Senki Zeshou Symphogear GX

Usually when it comes to a series of any kind, when the second entry is a surprising success that means the third entry could either disappoint or miraculously keep the goodness going strong. Was that the case for the third entry in the Symphogear series? Let’s find out as we take a look at Senki Zesshou Symphogear GX.

New to the series? Check out my reviews of the previous two seasons:

Symphogear GX CoverFull Title: Senki Zesshou Symphogear GX: Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist

Genres: Action, Magic, Science-Fiction

Themes: Ecchi, Fighting, Music

Number of episodes: 13

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: After the frontier incident, everyone who knew the circumstances believed the Noise were gone and the pain they caused was at an end. But a new conflict approached unseen. In the Yokohama Harbor Oosan-bashi Pier, a new pattern is detected that is similar to the Noise. A combat group wielding mysterious technology stands in the way of Hibiki and the others. When she hears of this enemy of unprecedented strength, Tsubasa hurries back home from England. But the Symphogear users see no opening to counterattack are forced into a difficult fight. In this situation of extreme disparity, the battle for the song that will end the world begins.

Symphogear GX heroines

Once again we have a story about cute and sexy girls wearing badass armor, beating up jelly monsters and the antagonists who control them all while singing awesome songs and occasionally snuggling with each other. In short, exactly what Symphogear fans look for in the series and to that point GX does not disappoint. In fact, I personally think that season 3 is tied with the first one as being the best in the series. I cannot decide which of the two is better though.

Maria kick

The fights are still some of the show’s highlights as they are still over the top and kick serious tooshie. It is debatable whether having more fights than usual is a good or bad thing. It depends on the viewer. Nevertheless they are all as good as one would expect from this series by now.

Hibiki's butt

The fanservice is still as glorious as ever though it somehow felt less forced this time. I could be wrong but aside from henshin sequences it did not feel as in your face this time around…but it is still delicious.

The animation is still as good as it has always been. Maybe a hiccup here and there but nothing that cannot be fixed on the Blu-Ray release. Same goes for the soundtrack in all its glory. How good the GX songs are compared to past seasons is debatable. I liked them myself.

Carol, the Autoscorers and Elfnein

Now for the villains. Personally I think Carol and the Autoscorers are the best antagonists the series has had. Not in regards to depth of character because the Autoscorers are all one-dimensional and Carol herself is quite simple. Come to think of it, fine has always been the most complex villain…for Symphogear baddies that is not saying much. However, what the villains of the series lack in depth and complexity they make up for in their presence actions: How they execute their plans, how they perform in combat, their mannerisms, character traits, attire, etc. Carol and her lackeys I feel excel at all of these. Again debatable but that is how I see it.

Having said all this, when we remove the layers of coolness GX throws to the table the overall product is more of the same. One who has seen a season of what the Symphogear has to offer one has seen it all. Other than what is expected of new seasons of action shows like this one, little is done to differentiate GX from its predecessors. The thing is, Symphogear does not need to do much different to be a good series. As they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Just add enough flavor to keep the dish as tasty as it already is. Hey, at least GX went a step beyond and pulled a surprise or two. This is of course for non-fans who are looking for a cool magical armored girl show. Fans of the series knew what to expect and rolled with it.

Team Symphogear

As far as Team Symphogear go as characters everyone is the same as always and that is a good thing. The girls do go through their personal development arcs which feel like filling holes left in past seasons. The former New Emo Order trio, Maria, Kirika and Shirabe, had a “redemption” type route while Hibiki, Tsubasa and Chris once again tackled past demons, which were thankfully a bit more fleshed out this time, especially Hibiki’s. This gave an acceptable reason for the initial recycled subplot feel GX initially had. Good stuff.

As for the yuri, ShiraKiri got major screen time, there is a friendly love triangle between Maria and Chris for Tsubasa’s love (with a possible winner) and HibiMiku is still as glorious as ever. Sadly, even though Miku shone brightly in past seasons she was relegated to the sidelines this season. On the bright side when she was on screen her presence was as strong as it has always been. She still holds the title of “ultimate yuri waifu” is what I am saying.

Overall Symphogear GX is more of the same in context but still manages to be as entertaining, and to some extent, more than its predecessors. Basically it is better than Symphogear G, not to say G (far from it) but GX is more enjoyable. The action is ramped up to 9000, the soundtrack is still awesome, the heroines are still lovable, the villains brought a lot more to the table than past baddies and the yuri goodness is noticeable even to those without sight. A must watch for Symphogear fans who like the series for what it is and fans of armored magical heroine series like Nanoha, Yuki Yuna and Vividred Operation to name a few.

I’d say that there was a clear end to the love triangle by the end xD
I really don’t think there was anything left to question.

Now Chris is playing 7th wheel xD She really needs someone. Give her schoolmates some development next season already studio!

I’m not telling people there was a winner. They have to see for themselves.
The three are adorable stooges and little else sadly like Nanoha’s posse in the first two seasons though they got more to do.

Soundtrack was as awesome as the first 3, I already have all the tracks into my playlist.
Maria won in the end… and to be honest, I actually prefer it that way, as much as I like Chris, Maria fits in better with Tsubasa…

I was really pro-Carol till the end (Is that weird?) Not that I hate the protagonists, I just find the baddies in this season great in a way that, imo, they’re more focused and serious in their goal…no room for doubts or dilemmas whatsoever (maybe because most of them are just dolls) unlike in the first two seasons where the “ex” villains have moments of confusion on whether they should fight for the good side or the bad side. Sure, Carol has her own drama but she didn’t dwell much on it (she did have 200+ years to do that 😛 ) knowing that it’ll be a hindrance. Getting rid of everything that stands in their way, and for Carol, conscience included. Conveniently storing it and most of her memories in another “Carol” that is Elfnein. Plus, Carol-chan is so cute ❤ 😛

That’s probably why this season is so action packed…and I mean really packed because less drama and more fighting 😀 How Carol planned everything was really smart and amazing, much like how Ryoko planned her evil deed in season 1. Okay I’ve been Carol-ing this whole time so I’ll move on to the others 😛

The yuri in this season was more evident than the previous seasons actually so YAY! for that 🙂 I never really saw the possibility of a MariaxTsubasa ship in the last season until now, Maria’s really going for it didn’t she? Wooing Tsubasa by being her knight in shining armor, protecting her even if she’s gearless ❤ Even fighting Tsubasa’s dad and stuff :3 Though there’s my ChrisxTsubasa ship before but it’s not that strong compared to MariaxTsubasa 😛

And of course HibikixMiku still the best and staying strong 🙂 I totally agree with what you said regarding Miku, she may have less screen time this season but when it’s her time she really owned it that’s the “ultimate yuri waifu” 😀

Shirabe and Kirika, really glad they got to show off more of their yuri.ness this time and they’re really cute :3

And everything else…still awesome; the songs, fanservice, upgraded gears…thumbs up
A tiny hint of another season? Very much welcomed 🙂

    PS
I thought you’re going to put up a gif of Carol and Elfnein’s last scene together before they merged into one lol 😛

Carol’s a great villain so I don’t blame you for gushing over her so much.

The competition for Tsubasa’s love was fierce but a clear winner was decided.

      Miku loves Hibiki very much.

ShiraKiri getting more spotlight was much appreciated.

I do not cover finales unless absolutely necessary, such as Yuri Kuma Arashi’s.

Now they’re just teasing us. All Miku gets is another hug, but Eflnein gets a full on kiss? What a cheat.

    Damn great anime that was.
Imho, the best out of all 3 seasons.
Everything was greater, shinier, better made – be it visuals or music(Carol’s CD is AMAZING holy shit, her voice and everything), more over the top, brought more feels(like “Sora e…” song, holy damn that song) and just tops previous seasons in just about anything, be it action or villains.

Also, I’m terribly pumped for 4 OVA’s, and maybe, just maybe we will get 4th season next year? Pretty please? I’m almost sure something will happen in future as in epilogue there was some obvious teasing on material for next installment, be it new season or movie. Not to mention, GX sells pretty damn well from what I heard. So, yay. Also, CR has all of the seasons now, so it should get more popularity now that it’s easily accessible legally.

Also, what makes me incredibly happy is growing fandom. Great people, great fanart, brilliant ideas.

I loved it. I believe it’s actually my favourite anime series.

And wow, TsubaMaria FTW. Hell yeah.

ps. If only CR had better subs… but, I guess I’ll wait for Commie ones are they are superb in every way. They just take more time, but right now I have all the time in world for that.

It definitely felt like the stakes were ramped up 1000 fold this season.
Carol’s full song is one of the season’s best, if not the best.

Happy to hear the series is doing well. It deserves all the praise it gets. A continuation or at the very least a movie is the logical next step…a movie where we FINALLY GET WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR!

Your fav ship is just about confirmed at this point.

Eh. As long as it’s legible.

I want to know if all seasons are connected. All seasons have the same characters? Do I need to watch the past seasons to understand this one? Im really interested in this season but if i have to watch the others first Im ok with that

My only problem with this season is the episodic nature of the second half, but even that is miniscule compared to the awesomeness and gayness that this season bring…
This and Non Non Biyori makes this summer for me…

Now time to wait for season 4…

Your review summed up really nicely my thoughts about this season. It’s Symphogear, it doesnt need to be more than cute and sexy girls wearing song-powered armor beating monsters and villains, with a cheesy spice added in. Symphogear is awesome because of that (and the yuri of course!).

While the service was toned down a bit, the henshin booty shots undermined the serious moments. Oh well. Hibiki still has mastered the “Gentle Fist” School of Kung-Fu. I’m glad she finally when Full Nanoha on Carol-chan.

Shirabe and Kirika’s (MULTIPLE) confessions left me warm and fuzzy. The Tsubasa/Maria/Chris triangle didn’t have nearly enough fireworks for my liking, but, Maria and Tsubasa’s Fusion Dance kind of sealed the deal.

I hope we see more of Elfnein as their story arc was pretty darn good. Elfnein went from Carol’s construct to a full person with dreams and aspirations for the future. Was not expecting the twincest (SELF-cest?) at the end. At least Carol managed to do something right by giving Elfnein a new shot at life.

I was disappointed that Miku seemed to disappear in the final episodes. While she did show up for Hibiki to cry on, I’d rather they show more of their happy times together.

On a final note I’m not sure if Hibiki’s parents will stay together. There’s a lot of hurt that needs to be mended before that family is whole.

The fanservice on the show is traditional at this point. Heck, most magical armored girl shows have fanservice in them, especially during henshin sequences. But yes I am aware of your dislike for close-up shots and gravity defying hoots.
Both she and Carol were neat characters. It could be either in or self, most likely the latter.
      ShiraKiri’s love is undeniable.
Chris didn’t exactly put up much of a fight so Maria’s victory was only a matter of time considering how much effort she put in to wooing Tsubasa.
Yeah. It was sad she wasn’t there during the final battle but her greatness remains strong.
Probably not but that won’t stop Hibiki from trying to help them patch things up.

Another glorious and yuritastic season of Symphogear. Tsubasa and Maria are pretty much a canon couple. Carol is a great and sexy villain. We need S4 and hopefully we will see Hibiki and Miku finally become a couple.

      They technically already are one.
S4 is a must with the tease they left us in the end, or at least a movie.

) finished this season today and I can definitely say that I’m happy I gave this anime a try. Like I said before, it has it’s flaws but it’s so fun and the yuri was more obvious this time, still subtext though. I’m so on the Tsubasa x Maria ship, Chris didn’t even care haha, she needs someone know because everyone has someone to be shipped with. It was so adasdfas to see Maria going tsundere over Tsubasa at the end lol cute.

I think the first half wasn’t as good as past seasons, I don’t know why but I didn’t enjoy it that much. Second half was definitely better and I liked the fact that Carol’s plan wasn’t as obvious as the plans of the ‘villians’ in season 2. As villians, Carol and her team were definitely better. Elfnein is so sweet.
The songs are cool but I feel like some of the past songs are better, but still a good soundtrack in this season. I also liked the family plot.

I feel like they were setting something for season 4 and I hope I’m right. I want more of this, of my ships and more actions 😀 Do you know if the studio is planning a next season or ovas?
