Yuri Talk: A Tribute to Shoujoai.com

So recently some light had been shed on the ultimate fate of the site that helped mold me into the yuri ambassador/overlord I am today and so I figured I would pay tribute to the site I consider my yuri alma mater…or do my best to write one anyway. This has been long overdue but at long last I have what I need to write this.

A link to partial archives of the site has been shared. It will be posted below the tribute. Think of it as a walk down memory lane.

Shoujoai.com front page

Couldn’t find a better image of the front page so hopefully this will suffice.

I did not join shoujoai.com when it was first conceived but when I looked up the term shoujo ai after finishing Strawberry Panic on Wikipedia I discovered shoujoai.com in the search results (SA.com as I will abbreviate for the rest of the post). It did not take me long to get a feel for the site and get comfortable. I also discovered many other shows centered around yuri at the time like KnM, Kashimashi, Maria-sama, Yamibou etc.

SA.com was a great place for yuri fans of all tastes to gather and share their love of yuri in almost any way they wished. Of course there was a sub-area to talk about other topics but I rarely went there other than to talk about sexy pics. There was also the beyond helpful “lists” as it were. Before my Yuri list, which was inspired by Michirumagazine‘s with some tweaks, there was “The Master List” by Cryssoberyl, a manga recommendations list by Peppah and MouseE910 and the handy dandy “yuri scenes” list containing the locations of all the raunchier yuri moments in anime and hentai. Fanfiction writers and artists were also given a chance to shine sharing their stories of their favorite couples. Grimgrimoire got the spotlight there, which pleased me as Lillet X Amoretta needed more recognition…and still kinda does these days. Oh I cannot forget the Kannazuki no Miko discussions that went on there. Oh how fun those were.

Let us not forget the awesome people I met there. People like Elkat, yurimylove, ArcaJ, Randomredneck, Peppah, MouseE910, Zefiris and of course Cryssoberyl to name a few (who I remember). Some of these fine ladies and gentlemen joined me here continuing to show their support for the nation when able.

Unfortunately the fun times would not last as for some reason SA.com’s greatness slowly dwindled, possibly during a year that not that many quality shows with yuri content came out and there was not much to talk about. That or people had things to do. Who can say? Then one day…the site vanished without a trace sometime between 2013-14. For a while its disappearance was a mystery to most until recently light was shed by “Miss Cryss” as I will now call her (or if she prefer I won’t change the name even though silly nicknames is something I do). According to her the second owner in charge of the site, sec, passed away due to unknown circumstances. This was most unfortunate as the first president before him, Phillip Mak (PMak), also left this Earth. Possibly to respect their memories or some other reason I know not but feel best not to delve into, the site was wiped clean from the internet only with a few of its remnants scattered across the digital plane…

shoujoai.com mascots

I would have written this tribute sooner but I had no idea until now what had happened to SA.com. Now that I have some idea I felt fitting to finally write this to solidify the site’s place in history. Thank you SA.com. Thank you sec, thank you PMak for gifting yuri fans with a place to go and share their love for all things yuri and whatever else they felt like doing. Thank you to the people I mentioned and others I sadly do not remember for the fun times we had there and interesting moments. May we always have a spot for our alma mater in our hearts and never forget how it helped us spread the love.

Ah, so that’s what happened. Always wondered how that site went down. I also found it after watching “Strawberry Panic!” and used it as my main source for what to watch next, Before I found your site of course.

OG-Man, PMak, Philip aka Debbie, was one of my best friends. I know it’s a bit late, but if you have any questions or if there was anyone who reached out who wanted definitive closure about this, I can provide it privately. I attended PMak’s funeral. It was held in Vancouver, BC going close to 10 years ago now. I have photos with PMak as we spent time together while Pmak managed other things (business related). It was incredibly tragic… feel free to contact me.

I, and surely everyone else, send our deepest (better late than never) condolences for the passing of a great ally of the yuri nation. I am also humbled that you are willing to share information regarding PMak to the interested. I wish you all the best and hope all is going well on your side of the planet.

Dammit. That is news indeed. Pax Aeternum to PMak, and kudos to Crys wherever she/he is now. You probably guessed that I was one of the lurkers on the many Kannazuki discussions, and I know that those guys were the most dedicated fans around. They kept the deleted scripts when writers deleted themselves from fanfiction.net. They’re the only ones that soldiered on through Amnesian (ya think CA was “waiting for a good end that never came?) for 12 translated chapters. Those guys were the site.

I said it before, I say it now. Like it or not, you’re the man and you’re the site now. Good luck

…Somehow, the mass exodus of all the other yuri sites were in the 2013-2014. “The Third Age.” The New Day. The hell?

Sees a story link to some place called Shoujo-ai.com
Is introduced to the wonderful world of Yuri.

    …Damn, I miss that place.

  5. I was the moderator of Fun Chat back in the day. I loved that site. Sadly, like many others as the activity dropped off I too, dropped out. RIP Sec and Pmak.

It’s indeed sad with the turn of events, considering they did it around 2001, when there was practically no other place for yuri and us, so it shall be missed. I hope it’ll be salvaged though, since more visibility means more support etc. Anyway, I did post the link for the partial archives of the site on the other blog post, but here it is anyway, in case you missed it. Exploring the site gives me feels, actually. It’s a proof that many other people who love yuri exist, even around the time you’re still a baby, like me. Huuu. To all the future yuristas, though shall not forget this site!

now THAT, is nostalgia! Oh I have fond memories of that, I spent quite a bit of time there myself. I still remember posting my “introduction forum post” there around 2009, a year or so after my personal “second coming” (rediscovering anime after couple decades away). I’m glad to see some faces still around, now contributing to your blog here. I hope we can remain lifelong friends…

I remember this site!! I stumbled upon it when I fell in love with the Yuri Genre. That was circa 2006 when Strawberry Panic Aired. Those were the days!! I remember you OG -man, Cryssoberryl, ArcaJ, Random Redneck, the old crew! I miss those days! I was a high schooler then who was very secretive of his love for cute girls loving cute girls(now I am very open as a 24 year old adult). Now I’m happy to have found your blog. I teared up at this post from the sweet nostalgia. I’m really sorry to hear that the owners passed away :(. They are missed greatly. Anyway, I love your blog dude! Keep up the good work!

    Hello OG, it’s been a while, isn’t it. 🙂

I used to visit this SA site too and it’s sad to see the site go. And yeah I agree that there’s no quality yuri lately but oh well at least a few good ones still pop out every now and then.

More power to you and your blog.

Good to see you again dearest Snippy. Hope all is going well.
Oh no. When I said that I was talking about the years when there wasn’t much yuri or shows featuring yuri to talk about and site activity decreased exponentially. These days there’s PLENTY of yuri from small to large quantities. Just gotta look.

      Thank you.

It’s good to come across this website. In case anyone remembers, I used to be the yuri forum moderator at shoujoai.com. Been despairing since that old site suddenly disappeared.
