So recently some light had been shed on the ultimate fate of the site that helped mold me into the yuri ambassador/overlord I am today and so I figured I would pay tribute to the site I consider my yuri alma mater…or do my best to write one anyway. This has been long overdue but at long last I have what I need to write this.
A link to partial archives of the site has been shared. It will be posted below the tribute. Think of it as a walk down memory lane.
Couldn’t find a better image of the front page so hopefully this will suffice.
I did not join shoujoai.com when it was first conceived but when I looked up the term shoujo ai after finishing Strawberry Panic on Wikipedia I discovered shoujoai.com in the search results (SA.com as I will abbreviate for the rest of the post). It did not take me long to get a feel for the site and get comfortable. I also discovered many other shows centered around yuri at the time like KnM, Kashimashi, Maria-sama, Yamibou etc.
SA.com was a great place for yuri fans of all tastes to gather and share their love of yuri in almost any way they wished. Of course there was a sub-area to talk about other topics but I rarely went there other than to talk about sexy pics. There was also the beyond helpful “lists” as it were. Before my Yuri list, which was inspired by Michirumagazine‘s with some tweaks, there was “The Master List” by Cryssoberyl, a manga recommendations list by Peppah and MouseE910 and the handy dandy “yuri scenes” list containing the locations of all the raunchier yuri moments in anime and hentai. Fanfiction writers and artists were also given a chance to shine sharing their stories of their favorite couples. Grimgrimoire got the spotlight there, which pleased me as Lillet X Amoretta needed more recognition…and still kinda does these days. Oh I cannot forget the Kannazuki no Miko discussions that went on there. Oh how fun those were.
Let us not forget the awesome people I met there. People like Elkat, yurimylove, ArcaJ, Randomredneck, Peppah, MouseE910, Zefiris and of course Cryssoberyl to name a few (who I remember). Some of these fine ladies and gentlemen joined me here continuing to show their support for the nation when able.
Unfortunately the fun times would not last as for some reason SA.com’s greatness slowly dwindled, possibly during a year that not that many quality shows with yuri content came out and there was not much to talk about. That or people had things to do. Who can say? Then one day…the site vanished without a trace sometime between 2013-14. For a while its disappearance was a mystery to most until recently light was shed by “Miss Cryss” as I will now call her (or if she prefer I won’t change the name even though silly nicknames is something I do). According to her the second owner in charge of the site, sec, passed away due to unknown circumstances. This was most unfortunate as the first president before him, Phillip Mak (PMak), also left this Earth. Possibly to respect their memories or some other reason I know not but feel best not to delve into, the site was wiped clean from the internet only with a few of its remnants scattered across the digital plane…
I would have written this tribute sooner but I had no idea until now what had happened to SA.com. Now that I have some idea I felt fitting to finally write this to solidify the site’s place in history. Thank you SA.com. Thank you sec, thank you PMak for gifting yuri fans with a place to go and share their love for all things yuri and whatever else they felt like doing. Thank you to the people I mentioned and others I sadly do not remember for the fun times we had there and interesting moments. May we always have a spot for our alma mater in our hearts and never forget how it helped us spread the love.
