253rd G-View: Non Non Biyori Repeat

Yet another Girls Club show came to an end. Let’s take a look at how the second season of Non Non Biyori fared compared to the previous one in Non Non Biyori Repeat.

Here’s the review of the first season in case anyone missed it:

202nd G-View: Non Non Biyori

Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life

Themes: Countryside

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 11/10

Non Non Biyori Repeat swing

There is no need for a plot summary as the show is more of the same: Cute girls doing cute things in a town located in the countryside. The show’s content remains the same. The only changes are in the time intervals each episode takes place. Some of them take place before episodes in season 1, like 2.1 being before 1.1 and 2.2 being before 1.2. Those are the easiest examples as other episodes require more knowledge of the first season to know when they take place. For readers wondering if it is necessary to know when episodes take place to fully enjoy Repeat, no it is not. Viewers coming back for more can enjoy it the same way they enjoyed the first one.

The series’ highlights remain the same such as the beautiful country landscape and the show’s token emphasis on taking the time to show viewers how beautiful the country can be during sunrise, sunset and nightfall. The humor and music are both similar.

The one difference is that in Repeat all but one of the introduced side characters get more screen time than before such as Konomi and Candy Store which is cool for fans of them. Also while Hotaru was the clear cut main protagonist last time this time it is more so Renge. Natsumi also gets more time in the spotlight. Basically the two superstars from last season KIND OF take a backseat. Speaking of the two…

Hotaru and Komari going out

Regarding the expected yuri on the show, especially from a certain champion, this is my one nitpick with it. Similar to shows like Show By Rock and Hana no Uta, Hotaru’s crush on Komari is greatly shown at first but then just as greatly toned down later. Repeat does the same thing because other than the origin of this wonderful love story it becomes an afterthought for the remainder of the season only brought up occasionally. On the bright side as mentioned above other ships get more screen time depending on who viewers ship.

Overall Non Non Biyori Repeat is more of the same NNB goodness fans enjoyed in the first season. It does not add more spice but rather keeps the red hot flame lit longer which is good enough. Obviously fans of the previous season, Girls Club aficionados and animeniacs looking for a relaxing show will enjoy this one easily. This will not change the minds of viewers who did not enjoy NNB 1 though.

Ayyyeee, during first few episodes I wondered why exactly should I watch more of almost exactly the same…
… but I realized, it’s just a great relaxing and uncomplicated show, in places extremely funny, but also so so warm it makes you just happy to see it.
And I was very pleasantly surprised that show kinda triggered in me memories from when I was a little kid and going to rural village to my grandma’s home during summers. These were great, active, fun filled times, and I felt similar warmth when watching these kids play.

I also stopped shipping in NNB. I don’t even need it here. For me it have now very different value, and my shipping senses I will leave for something with much older and mature characters.
(Like Symphogear, which ends soon. Too soon. weeps)

Overall, aye, great show that was.

Even with the toned down Yuri (the girls are a bit young after all), I loved, loved, LOVED Non Non Biyori Repeat. ‘ll just leave this head-canon here: Renge is actually Nozomi’s daughter from out of wed-lock and her parents claimed her to avoid a scandal. (Small towns can be vicious in the gossip department)

Who knew the seemingly sweet Konomi was a MASSIVE TROLL? I like this development. Poor Hikage is going to have her hands full. ^_^

Natsumi can be pretty smart and resourceful when something interests her.

I’m not sure why Hotaru feels the need to act so responsible. Does it have to do with her family moving from Tokyo? Is she running from a “Dark Past?” Also, I WANT A NEKOMA-CHAN PLUSHIE!!!!!

Finally, Candy Store and Nee-Nee are dating. You can’t tell me any different. ^_^

Toned down compared to last season to be exact. We did get material to create new ships at least.
The show didn’t falter so it easily succeeded in greatly entertaining us.
Just to make sure, which Nozomi are we talking about? I have a feeling I know who you mean but I want to make sure.

Konomi’s awesome. We knew that since her debut but didn’t know just how awesome until now.

      Pretty much.

Nekoma-chan plushies are extremely rare I heard. A pity.

It’s either Nee-Nee or Renge. I have a “CS imprinted Renge” ship in my mind but if CS actually marries Nee-Nee in the end I wouldn’t be upset.

As I thought. I knew something was off when you mentioned Nozomi.

It’s really sad to see great shows end as much as I want to see more of Hotarun 😥

Even if the my ship took the backseat this season I’m still satisfied with seeing them together almost all of the time and with those few times they’re alone :3

And yes it’s really fun to see more of the side characters this season also Renge’s genius mind 😛

I really love this show so much that when they said they’ll do it again next year I really wish that they will o.O

The Champ will be missed. Hopefully she and her beloved along with their friends will return once more in the future.

Their scenes together were few but wonderful as you said.

Renge’s an adventurous youth and we love her for that.

      Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Mondays wont be the same without Non Non Biyori…
Did lack the much needed Hotaru and Koma-Chan moments, they even had plenty of times in which they could’ve made moments for them but didn’t… so much lost potential… but still good overall, though you can’t really go wrong with any Non Non Biyori moments.

First off, welcome back! I hope you had a nice relaxing vacation.

So ends another stroll through the countryside. It was the same old goodness that it’s greatly known for and seeing everyone again was just swell. Repeat was one of the better shows this season in my eyes.
