Yet another Girls Club show came to an end. Let’s take a look at how the second season of Non Non Biyori fared compared to the previous one in Non Non Biyori Repeat.
Here’s the review of the first season in case anyone missed it:
Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life
Number of episodes: 12
There is no need for a plot summary as the show is more of the same: Cute girls doing cute things in a town located in the countryside. The show’s content remains the same. The only changes are in the time intervals each episode takes place. Some of them take place before episodes in season 1, like 2.1 being before 1.1 and 2.2 being before 1.2. Those are the easiest examples as other episodes require more knowledge of the first season to know when they take place. For readers wondering if it is necessary to know when episodes take place to fully enjoy Repeat, no it is not. Viewers coming back for more can enjoy it the same way they enjoyed the first one.
The series’ highlights remain the same such as the beautiful country landscape and the show’s token emphasis on taking the time to show viewers how beautiful the country can be during sunrise, sunset and nightfall. The humor and music are both similar.
The one difference is that in Repeat all but one of the introduced side characters get more screen time than before such as Konomi and Candy Store which is cool for fans of them. Also while Hotaru was the clear cut main protagonist last time this time it is more so Renge. Natsumi also gets more time in the spotlight. Basically the two superstars from last season KIND OF take a backseat. Speaking of the two…
Regarding the expected yuri on the show, especially from a certain champion, this is my one nitpick with it. Similar to shows like Show By Rock and Hana no Uta, Hotaru’s crush on Komari is greatly shown at first but then just as greatly toned down later. Repeat does the same thing because other than the origin of this wonderful love story it becomes an afterthought for the remainder of the season only brought up occasionally. On the bright side as mentioned above other ships get more screen time depending on who viewers ship.
Overall Non Non Biyori Repeat is more of the same NNB goodness fans enjoyed in the first season. It does not add more spice but rather keeps the red hot flame lit longer which is good enough. Obviously fans of the previous season, Girls Club aficionados and animeniacs looking for a relaxing show will enjoy this one easily. This will not change the minds of viewers who did not enjoy NNB 1 though.
