250th G-View: Hibike! Euphonium

I’ll do my best to review this show as fairly as possible. This is Hibike! Euphonium, aka the anime that influenced animeniacs to tell secret band camp stories.

Sound! Euphonium

Genres: Comedy, Drama

Themes: Brass Band, Yuri (Maybe), Trumpeters, Band Club

Number of Episodes: 13 + 1 OVA

G-Rating: 8/10

Plot Summary: Kumiko Oumae is looking for a new beginning at Kitauji High School, distant from most of her middle school peers. She befriends Hazuki Katou and Saphire “Midori” Kawashima and joins the Music Club with them, a past-time from her junior high days. There she continues to play euphonium and encounters Reina Kousaka, a figure from her past she didn’t expect to meet again. As the club works tirelessly to achieve it’s goals, the two girls awkwardly dance around each other, each wanting to know the other more.

Dream-solister-hibike-euphonium-intro-theme-song-anime-edition-403783.2

Before covering the show’s main event let’s go over the basics. The anime at its core is about a club that actually wants to go pro after some needed motivation. This part alone is what piqued my interest as most non-sports anime about clubs have the cast doing leisure activities pertaining to the their club…or sometimes not at all (K-ON!). It was interesting to see a show about a band club wanting to go pro. There may have been others in the past but I haven’t seen them. Aside from the vintage Kyoto Animation quality humor that is present in most of their shows one of Euphonium’s other highlights is the believability of the show’s presentation. There is little to no sugarcoating in the show’s more serious/dramatic segments. Viewers see how difficult it can be for not only a band club to compete in tournaments but acknowledge that this can also be applied to ANY high school club/group who want to master their craft in a competitive environment. It showed that unless students are naturally gifted or skilled at multi-tasking they either have to give 120% to the band or if they have other goals stop trying altogether. This is not an “A for effort” world. You want to go pro, you better give it your all. That is one of the show’s main messages. No anime superpowers to help students here. They either have it or they do not. Simple as that. The segments that covered the seriousness of going pro were excellent. this also includes the characters’ own personal struggles…or at least the ones we got to see fully fleshed out. Many of them felt relatable, again complimenting the show’s believability despite some having said the character archetypes drew away from the realistic feel. Thing is that it does not matter which region of the world the animated feature comes from, there will always be cast members with archetypes, even in live-action media.

Kumiko running

As I mentioned in the above paragraph the show’s humor is vintage KyoAni. It is either hit or miss depending on viewers’ tastes. As far as I’m concerned it hit its mark and rarely felt forced. Good stuff all around but of course not everyone will agree. Such is life.

Asuka during an exhibitionSound! Euphonium band exhibition

The animation quality is what one would expect from a KyoAni show being done using this particular style. It is immediately identifiable and most of the time when viewers notice this style they can expect high quality. Euphonium is no different. As for the OST it is another one that blends into the background but has those insert songs and band performances based on real ones and originals for the show make the soundtrack stand out. Oh and the OP and ED are pretty good.

Almost there doods and peeps. The show’s cast is a mixed bag, more good than bad I’d say. Of course this is one of those shows with a very large cast that sadly does not get to flesh out all of its on-screen characters, thus some feel like throwaways yet are part of the band so might as well draw them in the background and occasionally have them say something. The main four ladies in the cover image all do a great job excelling at what they do. However, besides the main four there is one absolute breakout star from beginning to end for me.

The Great Asuka

The Great One, Asuka Tanaka. No matter what her mood, be it lighthearted or serious, every single time the great one was on screen my heart skipped a beat. A phenomenal performance by one Minako Kotobuki. Every single one of her actions had purpose behind them even when some felt she was being harsh. The great one worked in mysterious ways and was herself a mystery, a fascinating mystery I did not mind being solved at all.

As for the guys, one was awesome, the teacher used a tough love style approach that while it can have mixed results, when used properly it can work wonders. Whether his approach worked or not I will have viewers find out for themselves.

As for the lamest character, let’s just say this guy felt so “let’s include him because he’s in the source novel too!” that it was clear the writers had a hard time giving the bum a reason to exist. Fine by me as I did not care about Shuiichi at all. Even when he was finally given a struggle it was perfectly covered by Kumiko furthering his pointlessness to the series other than being a teased FRI (Forced romantic interest). There was another “because it’s in the novel” segment but thankfully it too was a tease to toy with the audience for the sake of getting online buzz. It is a dirty trick used by every director but it worked.

Damn it all

Alright. The nation has been waiting long enough for me to cover the show’s main attraction as far as they are concerned, the dynamics of the main protagonists Kumiko Oumae and Reina Kousaka. I thought long and hard about how I would approach this part of the review. Should I cover their relationship in a short paragraph or was a “Part 2” necessary? In the end I went with the short approach. There was no doubt about it. KumiRei/ReiMiko was the top yuri pairing of the Spring 2015 season no contest. There were other wonderful pairings but this was the one that got the most buzz, partly because it was from KyoAni, them being labeled anime gods amongst diehard fans being surpassed by a select few, and also because of how natural their relationship felt. It went so far as some viewers judging the show’s merits solely on this pair’s status by the finale. While I do like to admit this because the pair overshadowed other Spring yuri pairings that deserved more attention…the KumiRei hype was well deserved. There’s just something about how KyoAni presents its yuri characters. Thing is that while their approaches are nothing unique it is how they present their pairings that drive fans insane with OTP lust.

KonaKagaThe NibuDeko FeudRitsu_and_Mio_Ice-Pop

Past KyoAni yuri pairings, the top three ones pictured here have all been well executed despite none of them going beyond soft yuri. Despite my having mentioned KyoAni being infamous for screwing yuri fans the truth is that albeit one “middle finger” moment (coughTM/TLScoughMidoricough) the rest were done as longtime yuri viewers expect from a “business as usual” approach. I mentioned the “business as usual” route before but I will leave that to people who follow me on Twitter to get what it means. Perhaps I will address that in a Yuri Talk segment sometime in the future.

Anyway KumiRei/ReiMiko. DrAnimeniac commented on how their relationship’s appeal is how natural it felt. Their coming together did not feel forced at all. It was suffice to say a very well built up pairing. It might as well be romantic. It is that powerful of a duo dynamic. Heck, KyoAni even threw some curve balls to tease fans throughout but continued the course. Let me put it this way, if all goes well in the nation’s favor this could be one of the best. Whether that belief sticks remains to be seen as it is highly unlikely this is the last season. Basically for viewers who have yet to pick this show up the KumiRei/ReiMiko hype while feeling overshadowing is well deserved.

Overall Hibike! Euphonium is a surprise hit to yours truly. The band club and personal segments were well done, the show was vintage KyoAni goodness, the pacing was good, the hiccups were annoying but no gamebrakers (just be aware they are there) and of course the main attraction’s hype is worth it. Now I strongly believe the series’ momentum will heavily depend on how it will continue. KyoAni could have another pretty good series on their hands or they could pull the ultimate screwjob. Only time will tell…

PS: At least the nation was not screwed like in Pleiades.

Loved this show from the get go even before the KumiRei moments started, animation plus the characters made it work so well. Everything about it was just so real and beautiful that you could almost be there. Hoping for a S2.

About the FRI – best comment I read about him was on the last ep (not my comment):
steps on foot “What was that for?” “Nothing.” Translation = “Bruhhh, I belong to Reina.” “

KyoAni’s pretty good at immersing viewers into their adaptations. An S2 is more than likely. That or a movie.

That’s how it should be once the continuation’s announced.

Throughout the entire review I was thinking “CA/Pleiades reference, CA/Pleiades reference,” and you made it without referencing them! Oh wait, nevermind, but great effort. One of the tougher guys to review?

It’s really a unique spin to go pro instead of your aforementioned other leisure club activities: I think the only other real mention of the intricacies of getting cut/competitiveness – not even going pro per se, would be in Saki Achiga-hen (the minor school Shindouji has Kirame somewhat angsting over being in the team ahead of higher-ranked classmates because of her never-die ability).

Reina/Kumiko may be one of yuri’s minor demigoddesses, but yuri pantheon or not, Asuka’s the real goddess here. I mean, you might have to put another room in your HoF for the Seis, Chikarus and Asukas as “yuri pairings be damned, I’m a boss” category.

Couldn’t do it. Pleiades screwed us over too hard to ignore the blasphemy. Cross Trash is still Cross Trash.

It was a noteworthy show that’s for sure.

The great one certainly makes a strong case as a star that can stand alongside other yuri superstars and legends.

If you ask me about Hibike! having season two, I have’d seen enough. Curse me if you want. I’m just satisfied on what I have’d seen on the last episode. Good thing the KumiRei ship is still intact after grueling 13 episodes. If you want another season, I feared that it might be the vengeance season for Shouichi and Mr. T-sensei. Let be novel be novel and anime be anime (Period).

You know, I started this show without even thinking it was going to have yuri moments. I watched it because the animation caught my attention and because it was from KyoAni. I also expected something light like K-ON. I’m really glad it wasn’t like that (I love K-ON but it is really simple). It was a nice surprise and enjoyed H!E a lot. Like you said, KumiRei moments happened so naturally and with so much chemistry between them that it was impossible not to ship them haha and they are definitely what started many discussions about the show. They are definitely one of my fave ships.

I also really liked the characters, even Shuichi only if he stays as the friend lol. My fave side character is Natsuki.

I rate this show 9/10 tbh and if it gets a 2nd season, hopefully it will be as good as this season. I’m ok if KumiRei gets drama, I enjoy pain like Reina but only if it everything ends on a happy note for me.

    Can’t wait for the ova!

The reason why pairings like this one get more attention than others that are just as good is because mainstream fans of any kind of romantic pairing are masochists. I used to say that yuri fans are more so than others but any fan of drama filled romantic pairings go nuts for this stuff whether they want to admit it or not.
The only reason I didn’t as much was because we got other great pairings in the Spring season as well. Still I enjoyed the KumiRei drama I admit, just didn’t stress myself over it as much.

K-ON!’s appeal, as I explained in my G-View of it, was that it was a show about living and enjoying high school life to the fullest while cherishing the friendships made there if they are worth cherishing. The music was part of the experience.

The show’s good and KumiRei’s chemistry felt so natural that it was most enjoyable throughout the show’s fun.
Natsuki’s pretty cool but I bet the reason you like her is because the writers started shipping her with Fangirl.

Hopefully they won’t go the Pleiades route next time.

You’re so right I think we are all a little masochists inside haha. I liked Natsuki before that but I think shipping her with Fangirl is a plus. The truth is that I don’t hate Fangirl for that reason, because her interactions with Natsuki are cute.
I always see people saying that about Pleiades but I don’t know what is it… I’ll google it but I won’t watch it of course, after everything I read lol.
I really like K-ON, I finished the 2nd season when I was in my last year of high school so it fit perfect with my feelings at that moment 😀 and the music is great.

It seems I shall keep hoping and my fingers crossed until Season 2, since there’s most likely a second season a lot could definitely happen. Hopefully it wouldn’t be like Pleiades.

“Wishes don’t come true unless you wish out loud.” is what Kumiko said and I super double thumb’s up that 😉

The last episode was awesome because I really felt the band’s nervousness the whole time before they played. It was great that they showed the band’s awesomeness when they were on stage and all but I was hoping that they would show how awesome their competitors are, especially Rikka, as well.

This first season really made an impression and now, after being given for what seems to be a very clear sign that a season 2 might happen, I’m really looking forward to it. I feel like there will be more drama in season 2, more issues to deal with (Kumiko and her sister still seem awkward to each other) and probably more secrets that are yet to be revealed. Secrets like, what’s the mystery behind the Great Asuka? And darn it who was that kid in the photo that Taki was looking at o_O . And maybe more surprises, like more development between Kumiko and Reina or something 😛 (I noticed during the last episode that Reina was really asking for Kumiko’s attention; in the train, asking Kumiko, who was busy waving at her friend from Rikka, to tie her hair (which she can clearly do herself), poking her right before going to the stage…and that last scene that close up of them holding hands…) Well I guess I’m probably reading too much into it but I couldn’t help it 😛

Anyway, the insignificant character which is Shuiichi will probably be given more attention this time even if he’s just an FRI for Kumiko because Hazuki has a thing for him 😛 But as for Taki, he is and will probably be still a great threat to the KumiRei ship in the second season. I’m excited to see already what will happen to everyone 😛 As long as KumiRei stays strong I don’t mind whatever happens (that’s a bit selfish of me 😛 )
Oh and mini-Sapphire-chan! Please let there be more of her in the next season 😀

That image of the woman that Taki-sensei was looking at was his dead wife. Which is why he doesn’t wear a ring anymore (If we go by the novel). Then again they changed so much from the first volume of the novel that anything could happen lol. But she only looks small because of the camera angle the photo itself as it was a perspective shot. But notice that she does have a wedding ring on.
I would if they could cover the 2nd and 3rd novel but only loosely like they did with these 13 eps and the first volume.

Oh yes. curse Pleiades for screwing us over and being underwhelming.

Nah. The writers clearly wanted the nation to mark out hard for the “Reina yearning for Kumiko’s attention” moments in the last episode.

There’s plenty more material for a second season.

Mini-Sapphire needs to come back. That’s for sure.
At least you have a more sensible response to the KumiRei progression than some other nation members out there. You understand how it works and that’s good.

Those brief “Reina yearning for Kumiko’s attention” moments in the last episode could either mean “enjoy these moments because this the last” or “this is already a sign for what’s to come in the next season” so I’m not sure what to feel 😛 I’m wishing out loud that it’s the last one 😀

I’m honestly tired of playing the “If a yuri pairing doesn’t end the way I want I’ll be mad” game, but that’s how some people are so what can ya do. I enjoyed the overall show too much to throw a hissy fit over that. The fact they didn’t go the wrong way was a major plus.

Whooo boy, there was a truckload of drama happening on tumblr after every episode, especially 10th, when many decided that KyoAni screwed them over again. And general wild excitement after every KumiRei scene.

KyoAni really did they homework well and squeezed as much drama from their audience as possible. But thankfully at least they ended 1st season with main ship intact, so let’s pat their backs for it. What might happen in 2nd, hard to say, but hopefully they won’t go too much into source material as they would lose a huge part of audience. The best one we can hope for KumiRei to be ambigious and passionate romantic-frienship. I’m fine by that as long as they won’t throw too much Taki/Shuuichi into mix.

I really love what the did with characters. Their personalities felt very natural, and the fact the animation was pretty awesome, didn’t hurt either.
Ofc Asuka is best girl, it’s hard to not worship her, but also in the latest episodes Natsuki was fleshed out a little more and she proved to be, as Reina put it, hella “Cool Senpai”. She really is.

Overall – it was better than I expected and a wild emotional ride to boot. Well, mainly thanks to tumblr for the drama, but yeah. Och. And music is really damn awesome, I love it.

And of couse, Asuka, the everyone’s favourite!!
In the end, It didn’t hit on me quite hard as K-ON! or Kiniro Mosaic in this season, but a good show after all.

I enjoyed this, I liked the characters, I liked the music, I like the theme, I most definitely liked Reina x Kumiko, as you said, easily springs top pairing.
I have to of course hate Taki and Tsukamoto, but any male character who poses even the tiniest threat to the Yuri has to go in my eyes and be replaced by another potential Yuri candidate, but alas the world isn’t perfect.
We got the business as usual ending, which is more than we could have hoped for, it could have been much worse, we could have sank at the last moment very easily.
We got plenty of great Yuri moments and two “love” confessions, a win in my books.

For me, it was an okay anime. I enjoyed the music and I liked the animation, but the characters I really wanted to know weren’t focused on and the teasing just got obnoxious because at the point they were doing it, it wouldn’t have felt weird for the girls to explore some of their sexuality, but whatever. Besides that, I didn’t hate Shuichi either, bland, sure, but his design reminded me of a little Makoto Tachibana and Makoto has a very soft spot in my heart haha. Thanks for the shout out, I really appreciate it. After this finale and reflecting on this first season as a whole, I still stand by my feeling that this is one of the most natural, not just yuri, but generally romantic relationship build ups I’ve seen yet. The chemistry between them was undeniable and obvious, but still managed not to overshadow what the core of the show was actually about…band club.

I really liked this show long before I even thought Reimiko was a possibility, but once the ship started to materialize, it was a really nice bonus treat. Throughout the entire episode I was on the edge of my seat and I felt as nervous as they were. Though I could’t tell if it was for their competition or the threats to our ship that made my heart race, maybe it was both. I was a bit nervous during that Shuiichi and Kumiko moment, but when it was over, I could see it was definitely “because it’s in the source material” moment. You’re exactly right when you say he’s a minor character that they were sort of forced to try and make relevant. He really has no significance otherwise as far as the anime is concerned. That being said though, I didn’t dislike him, I just didn’t want him ruining our ship. Same with Taki-sensei. Let’s hope they won’t become bigger threats next season, though I’m realistic to know it’s a possibility. Only time will tell.

As for everyone else, I generally liked most of the characters, but to avoid getting too lengthy, I’ll save my thorough discussion on the entire show for my own post. I will say though that I was very happy they got Gold and will be moving on to Nationals and so I’m looking forward to season 2, which I don’t even think there is a question about if we’ll have or not. I also agree that Reimiko is definitely the top pairing of this season and will probably be contenders for the year. All in all, Hibike! Euphonium was a win.

That it was Doc. A show whose premise was already enough to keep the interested yearning for more and then ReiMiko was the icing on the cake.
Shuiichi’s pointless but that does make us wary that his role along with Taki-sensei’s will be incremented next season. So yeah the ones who were in distress throughout the show because of those guys still have to keep their guards up.

The last episode isn’t as thrilling as i expected. I actually think that this show is too fast paced left some loopholes here and there, but not to the point that it’s confusing to watch. But that aside, I truly enjoy this anime regardless of its hardly noticeable flaws.

I can’t say I’m not bugged by the fact that the main ship will sink if KyoAni decide to make the 2nd season and strictly follow the original source. It’s kinda sad to accept, but i know i can deal with it if it’s happen (we’re going back to accept-what-we-can yuri fans). I mean there’s also yuri pairing, yet all of my attention sucked for KumiRei/ReiMiko ship.

But it’s good thing that the show isn’t all about relationship/romance. The music and the band drama is surely great distraction for the inevitable disappointment over the upcoming sinking ship. All in all, this one is a good anime. I can see myself re-watching this show in near future.

The finale was terrific. It may have just been events leading up to and after their performance but I liked how it was done, from the band’s preparations to the speeches made before their attempt, the performance and, of course, when they won. So overall, this was a very nice experience. The interactions were great and I liked the gradual progression of the band’s unity, which cumulated in their performance, showing off the fruits of their hard work.

Of the people that got focus, Kumiko and Reina’s relationship was great and I liked how it gradually developed. Midori, Hazuki, Haruka, Aoi, Goto, Rika and Kaori were alright. Asuka has her secrets but she was very entertaining indeed. Natsuki was quite cool, even more so after the auditions, especially since there were some remarks about how she was from the other characters, including Reina! I did not like Yuko that much because of the whole debacle that happened during the auditions but after that she was okay in my book. I’m just glad she doesn’t have any sort of grudge over it. Sir Taki was a good teacher who got the job done. I liked his earnestness and how dedicated he was in bringing out the best in the band, even if he was mean in the eyes in some. Shuuichi was a nice guy but…I don’t really have much to say about him.

By the way, near the end, was that the first time the four main girls were in the same frame together? I don’t think they ever were together until then.

While this anime made me dread a very minor character (Mr. I’m-a-Love-Interest), I must give it a passing grade. Said walking prop didn’t damage my faith in the ship compared to another anime (I will not forget the S.S.Aoi/Subaru) so I can’t say it’s a total loss. At that, though, I felt there was members in the band that weren’t developed at all (in particular the girl whose eyes are hidden by her bangs comes to mind) that I hope are given a little development in the next season, but I’m not going to make any expectations.

A perfect combination of everything I love: high quality animation, classical music, and sprinkles of yuri. Season 2, please.

Something about Hibike! Euphonium that did not sit right with me and actually made me a little mad, why did it seem like Reina liked the music teacher. Actually not seem she showed her feelings towards the teacher as well as for Kumiko.

  23. Yeah this show is on my list. It’ll be the fourth KyoAni show I end up starting, and probably the one I’ll finish first. It may or may not be the one I enjoy the most, but only time will tell.

Though I’m primarily watching it because I have begun craving music anime and Asuka is so so soooooooooooooooooo HOT. I’m sure the queerbaiting won’t bug me, and I actually am really interested in seeing how KumiRei is handled. A lot of my friends love this show, while I don’t know if I’ll be as engaged in it as they were, I’ll certainly give it a shot. There’s a compilation film coming soon too, right? And then a second season? Dammit PonyCanyon, I have so much catching up to do.

But it looks absolutely beautiful and for once the character designs don’t make me cringe. So we’ll see how it goes.

Coming in years after this originally aired, I had been on the fence about the series because I’d heard vague complaints about it, but then I saw Liz and the Blue Bird, and loved the yuri in that, so I had to check out the series that spawned it all.

Early on in the season, I had major concerns about season 2 since the undisputed best character was a third year, and I worried it would be a year later. Fortunately that wasn’t the case, but if it was I can understand that being a show ruiner for many.

There was a cute relationship growing throughout season 1, and a bonus couple that showed up in the OVA.

I can’t wait to watch more.
