Magical girls traveling through outer space in makeshift motored broomsticks gathering engine fragments that originally started as a commercial ONA promoting cars. This is Houkago no Pleiades.
Alternate title: Wish Upon the Pleiades.
Genres: Drama, Magic, Sci-fi
Themes: Magical Girl, Magical Boy, Aliens, School, Space
Number of episodes: 12
G-Rating: 6/10
Plot Summary: One day, a girl named Subaru comes across a group of magical girls, among which is her childhood friend Aoi, and becomes one herself. Their duty is to search for fragments of a spaceship belonging to an alien known as a Pleiadian. However, a mysterious boy is seeking the fragments for his own use.
For the longest time the show has a very by the books setup: Subaru and the gang do whatever it is they are doing that day, the Pleiadian Chief informs them of a located engine fragment, they try to retrieve it, horned redhead shows up to steal the fragment, dogfight ensues, reflection. Rinse and repeat. Aside from character subplots and occasionalhints to the big reveal the only difference in the show’s narrative until the last quarter was the win ratio between sides. The last quarter is when the big reveal happens as is usually the case in shows with a progressive main plot. Basically if the formulaic narrative does not sound bothersome to some readers know that it will eventually lead to an admittedly interesting climax.
As this awesome poster illustrates one of the show’s biggest highlights is its interstellar travel. It practically gives viewers a tour of the solar system and it is gorgeous. Every time the girls visited a new planet or flew through the stars was pure eye candy. The girls themselves range from adorable to potential future raging otaku boner inducing babes. The Pleiadian chiefcis okay but not cute enough, mainly because my favorite character Nanako was the one who had to translate. Yeah not a fan of translator Nanako. I prefer regular Nanako. The dogfights are okay but nothing spectacular. I enjoyed the show’s OP quite a bit and the ED’s cute. The OST blends in with the background but is far from memorable.
The characters for the most part are passable. Itsuki, Aoi and Nanako are the three that stand out the most despite my dislike of translator Nanako. As for Aoi and Subaru…eh. Not much to their characters really. Until the big climax there isn’t much to either girl. They fill their roles and stick to it. As for the horned redhead…he did his thing. It’s cool.
Overall Houkago no Pleiades is visually gorgeous but other than the interesting climax, decent cast and dogfights it’s an average magical girl show. Worth watching once but compared to other 2015 anime it’s nothing special despite its visual appeal.
I much preferred regular Nanako too. It really sucks that 90% of her “dialogue” was just translating for that alien.
They also did too little with the cast, outside the two main leads. But I guess that’s what you get with a romance story that has magical girl shenanigans as a subplot.

Yay! You agree with me on that one.
I dunno if more could have been done with the other three. If only that romance weren’t dull.

I rage a little in the end, but it was just me.
Since Mehnato is so bland to the point that even Subaru admit say ”that she don’t know anything about him” proof that how weak was this part. He depend of his ”evil’ formed to had some characterization, it was kinda cruel for Aoi because she was protecting Subaru even in the last episode and BANG in her face. Mehnato win even after been evil because he is a Boy.

I knew the ship was doomed after the “What’s he doing outside of the secret garden?” episode.

I knew that ship was done for really early on. I would have had a better opinion of the show if it had done more with the other characters, but it just ended up really shoving them to the side 😐

This show was going great in the beginning and then Minato kinda ruined it for me. The animation was good and the story was entertaining but I would have loved it if Minato was a girl. Reason one being since he’s a guy I’m not considering this anime as a Mahou Shoujo because the genre is Magical GIRL. I came to watch an anime about Magical GIRLS not Magical Girls and Boys. The second reason being I am a yuri fan and even though I came for the Magical Girl a little romance between the characters might be expected but since Minato is a guy, yuri ships are destroyed. Overall didn’t thoroughly enjoy this series, it has it’s ups and downs but this Magical boy thing was really really stupid and annoying. I’m glad about what happen to Minato in the end by the way and hope he stays in that “state” forever. No season 2, no wait for me, and Subaru just gets on with her life and forgets. That’s how it plays out in my head. I’m really sorry but I hate Minato.

Worst case of yuribait. Simple as that. Minato’s more dull than hateful really.

To avoid joining the Minato hate train, I like to go on record I have problem with him- as a supporting character and antagonist. His role as a love interest is so forced that it prevents me from finishing the final episode. If they wanted to make him “Subaru’s lover interest”, they should have established far sooner, rather than play up the subtext between Subaru and Aoi.
Otherwise, I feel the characters besides Subaru, Aoi and Minato are fairly underdeveloped, especially Nanako whose primary role could easily be replaced by subtitles. What started as an anime I had high hopes for became a major disappointment.

Well said dood. Minato’s biggest crime is being dull and the show should be ashamed of negative yuribaiting.

Finished it. And besides the side three chars (who had better development than aoi and subaru), the only real great part was the space technobabble. After that incident on the sun where they had subaru and aoi realize the same thing they had just finished realizing a while ago, I figured out the plot was now a dead mute point and was just watching for the animation and Itsuki.
I’d have to give this a 7/10
Itsuki’s hat brought it up an entire point.

A fair assessment. I found the character-focus episodes to be very good but I am a bit disappointed that they(meaning Itsuki, Nanako and Hikaru) weren’t fleshed out a bit more after them. Their interstellar travels really were feasts for the eyes. Translator Nanako was funny but IIiked the times when she spoke more.
As for Minato and Subaru, I… don’t really have much of a problem with that since Subaru’s feelings weren’t so out of left field. That and this relationship was just one potential that was fulfilled since, when Subaru went returned to her own universe, Minato was still in that coma (but possibly coming out of it soon?). Therefore, everything got reset to zero, in a sense.
Overall, though, I liked this anime.

Still doesn’t change the fact the show was underwhelming.

what I got out of this series: if you want a heart-warming yuri story stay away, but if you’re in need of a super-sonic engine bloom-stick that can take you to the end of the universe — buy SUBARU!! 😀

That’s one way of looking at the show in a positive light.
