Here’s the season 1 review:

212th G-View: Selector Infected WIXOSS

Selector Spread WIXOSS Cover

Genres: Dark, Drama, psychological, thriller, tournament

Themes: Card Game, Supernatural

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: After the events of Selector Infected WIXOSS Ruko and the gang try to recover from said events but both a certain girl along with another ominous figure have no plans of sitting idly and let it go. The games had just begun and what was already a twisted game will become even more twisted as more will be revealed beyond the truth of Selector battles. Can Ruko and her friends overcome the approaching darkness?

Wixoss main cast

The same girls from last time return but as explained in the summary things have changed… and not for the better. The second half is like the “answers” part of a series. Everything, or as much as the show could explain in the span of twelve episodes, is revealed and explained. Whether said revelations and explanations are satisfactory to viewers depends on their mindsets and how much explanation one needs in order to be satisfied. I will put it this way, even if some of the explanations and revelations do not make sense to some, what viewers are given are not out of the realm of possibility as far as the show is concerned. Basically 99% of what is revealed can be explained but again it depends on whether the viewers like what they see and hear.

Familiar and new faces

One thing I can say without a doubt about Spread compared to Infected is that everything was ramped up. The drama, dark themes, intensity of BATORUS and of course…the yuri. More on that in a bit.

A certain climactic BATORU

The flow of the BATORUs remain unchanged aside from the aforementioned ramped up intensity. Viewers will still have little to no idea how to play WIXOSS after watching Spread but like last time it is more about what the LRIG and Selectors are going through during BATORUs. They are short but each one packs a wallop and has meaning behind it.

Akira being haunted

For everyone who thought Infected showed a disturbing side of humanity once they watch Spread…hooooooooooo. Y’all ain’t seen nuthin’ yet. Not just dark but Spread shows that some people are just plain evil by nature. Yeesh! When certain people are driven over the edge, THEY ARE DRIVEN OVER THE EDGE!

The animation and music remain as effective as they were in the previous season filling the show with several moments of dread and few chances to breathe sighs of relief. I personally find the Spread OP and ED better than Infected.

Chiyori and Eldora

Of course everyone who was in Infected returns in Spread and have their moments of development but to me the breakout stars of the show are Chiyori and her LRIG Eldora. Two people who only had less than 10 minutes of total screen time in Infected were fleshed out to the fullest in Spread and what I initially saw as a token loli/genki with her “straight man” partner became a duo I would love to spend time playing and hanging out. I love these two that much. Oh and it is not just because Eldora is voiced by the great Satomi Arai.

Oh dear me

Infected had its fair share of subtle (yeah, subtle) yuri moments but remember when I said Spread ramped things up? Yeah there’s a reason why this show’s Grade went up from 4 to 3. Might as well drop the subtle act. Basically the yuri had both steamy and poetically romantic moments…an yes the poet is the same character but she’s not the only source of yuri this time.

Overall Selector Spread WIXOSS was a (mostly) fitting followup to the impressive Selector Infected WIXOSS. The stakes were higher and everything was ramped up to the max. However for viewers who did not enjoy the first season much or at all I cannot guarantee the second one will change their minds even though I personally feel Spread was better than Infected.

  1. Yeah Spread was definitely better than Infected. In all honesty, this season was a MASTERPIECE. It literally did everything right IMHO. The characters, the relationships/yuri, the animation, the music, the pacing, the twists, the themes HOLY SHIT. I cannot find a single flaw in its execution (except maybe in how I was a little annoyed with Chiyori at first and THEN I WAS CRYING FOR HER AND ELDORA OMFG WOW MARI OKADA YOU FUCKING BITCH), although I will admit it had A LOT of exposition. That didn’t totally bother me though because the characters were fleshed out amazingly.

I can’t even tell you who my favorite is, but Iona/Yuki is very deserving of her title as Homura 2.0.

I’m kind of addicted to the OP tbh. And the ED is Cyua again…so I have to love it.

DAT ENDING THOUGH. I CANNOT EVEN. IT WAS LIKE WATCHING UTENA’S ENDING ALL OVER AGAIN. HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHITSURAKUEN. GODDAMMIT JC STAFF.

Ahem. I need to calm down. Yeah this show just made my Top 10. Seriously so underrated. I loved the HELL out of it. Definitely the best anime of 2014 for me, no question about it. And yeah I’ve yet to see all the others I started to their completion, LOL.

Sorry I gotta calm down. But Yuki is perfect. So is Ruko. Even Tama too. And seeing Mayu die like that while knowing that someone cared about her…gaaaahhhh its all so good. ❤

I can definitely agree that Spread was better than Infected. My only gripe is pretty minor, but I would have liked more explanation how the Selector battles/consequences could exist from the mind of a little girl. I mean, if they were all just mental things, then whatever, but reality was bent for this girl’s imagination.
The whole her being referred to as some sort of ‘object’ and never being allowed outside the room kinda makes me think there was something special about her.
    But, really
Chiyori got a happy end, which gives Eldora a happy end
    Yuzuki got a happy end
    Hitoe got a happy end
Akki (The character I found surprisingly likable) got a happy end
Many more happy ends that weren’t yet mentioned here
Ruu’s on the path to a true end with her Tama
And just…it was just so good. All the suffering and everything, but never once making it so there wasn’t some hope left, and finally building up to that amazing finale ~
Depending on how strong of a curveball Celestial pulls, I may dub this my AotS.
I don’t see Yuuki Yuuna ending in a way I can deal with. But, we’ll see.

The con for Spread: It throws away a lot of rule established for the sake of drama, suspense, and thrill
The pro for Spread: It has so much yuri it makes me grinning all the time, even more than Infected was, and by this thing alone I would enjoy no matter what the con

What a ride Wixoss is and it is a good thing it ends with a smile…

P.S.: Predicted the happy end and now I can say farewell to this show with a joy…

I’d rather have a tale that tugs at my heartstrings every minute rather than ranting “No that is not how it goes!” every 10 minutes. But as I mentioned there are people who pay very close attention to the rules.

Besides it was more about the drama than the game anyway. The game was more of a setup.

Like I said before this was a nice series to watch. The story, the characters and the themes were decent enough for me. I also liked the development Chiyori and Eldora got. It defiinitely made up for their minimal appearance in Infected. As for the OP and ED, I liked Infected’s ED slightly more. Also, I liked the contrast between Infected and Spread’s endings, as Infected ended on a sour note, while Spread had a more upbeat and positive one.

Overall, I dare say that WIXOSS is one of the top anime of this year for me

Infected was the beginning with Spread being the end so it had to have either a bad or good ending, thankfully the latter.

Yup. It’s one of the year’s best for sure.

Ended up buying the physical game to find out the rules and names of cards (thus falling for the commercialism trap happily). The card names in anime and card names in physical game pretty much match up accurately, I could look at one of my cards irl and compare to a card name shouted in the anime and cheer yay. The gameplay is simpler than I expected, tho it took an hour or two for my slow brain to comprehend it all. I could probably play a WIXOSS game with someone else now, if that someone else could understand JPN enough. (still needa work on my kanji recognition memorization skills).
I want those mysteries wrapped up abit more.
Oh, and 3rd season of wixoss would be fantastic. tho i have no idea how they would do that without Ru. probably thru the power of friendship, love, hatred, and wishes. and money.

Haha, chiyori, you best loli, you. And Eldora combi irl. guess they had their happy genki resolution that has yet to be seen but will flesh out in our imaginations and their version of earth.
Where’s yuki ? and really, how was that world formed ?magic? hybrid matrix science?

      Chiyori X Eldora FTW!

Maybe she and Tama fused for good.
The reason Mayu was sealed away for life was the mysterious power she used to create Selector system. What that was we do not know and probably do not need to.

I think my only complaint this season was there was less Tama this season compared to the previous one. Other than that, it was amazing. Its impressive to see such dynamic character development in a second season where the characters are usually already mostly established. Aki’s character really impressed me, they made her bat-shit insane and actually likeable by putting her next to an evil (but not off putting) bitch.

I always say to people how most conflicts should be solved with a hug (haven’t done it much here.) This was definitely a case of some people not being hugged enough growing up, mostly Aki and Mayu. Wonder how well they would get along once they calm down.

    Hopes to OVA.

You always loved your dose of Tama goodness. Aki-Lucky sucked until Ulith showed up and showed how worse she was.

      Hugs can solve emotional problems.

      Yup.

When I first heard Tama say Battaru, I knew I had to watch this from start to finish and I have no regrets.
My one gripe with the show is the wanting to fuck the brother character, it makes me think about, what if the writer had a sister who watched/read his work, perhaps they’d be a bit concerned about their growing up together.
Besides that very entertaining two seasons, the ending though… Chiyori gets to meet Eldora (Though you don’t see it you do see her silhouette pop up in the back), why doesn’t Ruko get to meet Tama in person! it destroyed me, as the ending drew closer.
I knew it’d end with all the LRIGs getting their lives back and hoping we’d see Ruko and Tama get to be together in the real world, but it didn’t happen, as much as I enjoyed this show, I will remember the ending and feel sad knowing I never got to see them together.

The incest subplot didn’t bother me.
Probably the “catch” of the wish Ruko made was not to easily find “Taki”. Mean but it is how the show rolled from beginning to end.

It was just soul destroying for me though… watching as the final moments were unfolding as the music is playing, waiting for that moment Tama would run up to Ruko or something… I mean Chiyori got Eldora, so why not Ruko and Tama?
But no, they show her only as an imagination from Ruko for her to not actually be there, to give us what we wanted, but to then take it away instantly… It will always be looked back upon in despair for me.

  15. Alright finished. I really did not have very high expectations for this (The anime, not just this season) I rarely read much of the reviews because I’m scared to death of spoilers. Even after the first, like, 2 episodes, my expectations were still low. I was kinda bored but suddenly the show picked up the pace and then took off faster than an F-22A. Mainly because I thought the show was pretty simple and straightforward at first but then came all this extra-curricular bullshit. And good bullshit it was. And it only gained speed in this season. The initial impact of the real story and how it rapidly built on itself was overwhelming. Not like “too-much-information” overwhelming, it’s like “WHOOOAAAA” overwhelming. I like those special little songs they have in some battles throughout the whole series. I love all the characters. But not Aki or Ulith. So, with nice characters, 24 episodes, a badass story, I give this anime the title of Modern-Day Epic.

    Oh, and as for incest:
