Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru Episode 5: The Great Vertex Offensive

I really would like to go into detail with highlights and stuff like that but really this episode was one mega epic battle of the ages. I’ll do my best to cover what I can. Also it was my birthday yesterday but unlike previous years I do not have any Birthday Special post planned this year so this episodic will have to do.

Karin in the OP 1Karin in the OP 2

Some viewers wondered why Karin had yet to get a spot in the show’s OP up till this week. I told those people it was because she had yet to get her own henshin sequence. She got one this week, thus finally getting her spot in the OP. Rejoice Karin fans!

So the remaining Vertex were like “You know how the old school tradition of superhero shows is that one or two monsters attack once a week? SCREW THAT! We’re hitting those girls with everything we’ve got in one final assault!” Basically the remaining 7 of the 12  Vertex attack our heroines at once.

Mega Vertex

Our heroines fight well until the Vertex merge together and things get rough quick. What are our heroines to do?

Mankai TogoMankai ItsukiMankai Fu

Why transform into “Super Megatacular Priestess Mode” of course. Yeah it’s called Mankai but my codename for their super mode is better.

Meteor Soul

You know…tch…there are internet fans out there who say that it does not matter how good a game/book/cartoon/whatever else is, if the graphics/art/animation is subpar then it is not worth buying on DVD/Blu-Ray/Paperback. I think these people either work in a company that specializes in one of these media forms or they are geeks to the core. Whichever. I dunno. To those people my response to not placing graphics/art/animation as a high priority or “make or break” when purchasing a product is the following example:

My heartSuper Mega Spider Wheelchair

Mankai Yuna

Of course Yuna does not get left out of the Super Megatcular Priestess transformation loop.

Lesbian heroines of justice

Seriously the entire YunaTogo vs giant alien soul segment is full of win…so much win.

Icing on the cake

You know what’s funny? It’s not Karin tearing up and worrying about her friends’ well-being. That was icing on the cake of a super megatcular episode. What’s funny is that she alone did not get to transform into a Super Megatcular Priestess. That is yet another hint besides several others (Like there obviously being a mother ship/Vertex leader and this only being episode 5) that the invasion is far from over.

So yeah. What more can I say?

NO ONE DIE. THANK YOU. I watched the previous episode before this and was like, this is so in your face, it has to be a red harrying. I was right (for now, can’t jinx it).

Also Togo finally got her bad ass giant robot wheelchair, I knew it was coming and was far greater than I could have ever hoped. Will you never cease to amaze me?

I was so happy they didn’t go the typical one or two monster per episode route, that gets boring quick for me. Not only that, but these ones have analyzed these girls and actually thought up strategies using team work it seems. Also we have seen “12” vertex but have only seen 10 souls due to the merging. Depending on the exact nature of the prediction, there may be 2 more. That and Karin has yet to enter Super Megatacular Priestess Mode leads me to believe there is more to come.

Also I expect a lot of stuff from tsundere Karin next episode about not entering Super Megatacular Priestess Mode. Her familiar’s little battle cry and horn at the beginning made me crack up though.

I did not predict any deaths but certainly rough times ahead. I was right.

      Togo is law.

Being a tsundere Karin will mostly likely make a big deal of not having “leveled up” yet.

Yeah the YunaTogo was STRONG in this episode, also you know your magical girl anime takes a turn for badass when one of the girls “levelling up” involves getting a huge-ass spider tank XD.

As for the vertexes, considering they all seemed to be based on the Zodiac, it’s possible the show will have Ophiuchus (the 13th Zodiac) show up as the last boss or something.

P.s. i dunno if anyone noticed but i had a funny thought about Togo, in that her last name is Togo, and that she alsoi happens to be the teams sharpshooter…….hmm, i wonder if she’s any good with a M16 Custom lol.

It was a most glorious sight.

There are more episodes to go so one super Vertex or a mastermind showing up is bound to happen.

She is a sniper so most likely.

  3. elkat4 says:

Well considering we know all but nothing about the Vertex, I have a feeling this is just end of the beginning (that and we only five episodes in). We’re probably going to get 1-2 breather episodes to lull us into dropping our and guard before the plot takes off its kid gloves and socking us in the gut with some boss Vertex or an enemy even more dangerous than the Vertex.

On the other hand, Yuki may be the titular character, but Togo is the true main character (she just let’s her waifu take the spotlight).

On an unrelated note: We really need an anime where the heroines’ powers runs on yuri, either kissing or confessing their unending love for one another.

Well that was one really amazing finale….what’s that? There’s more? Some sort of strange side-effect of Mankai? Could our heroes be getting some strange alteration from using that power?

Really excited for the next episode!

This episode reminded me of the best episode in Strike Witches (6th ep in 2nd season), where Eila and Sanya also flew to the space to destroy enemy.

I was really expecting someone (Itsuki/Fu) to bite it this week. What with all the work they did to flesh out their background, last week. I was pleasantly surprised. (but, there’s still plentyof time to put my heart in a blender and hit “puree.”)

The Mankai were nice, but I really enjoyed that the girls (as well as the Vertex) employed strategy in this fight. They’re growing a fighters.

Last, but not least: Yuna x Togo is officially a “thing.” You can’t change my mind. If magical girl shows of the past have taught us anything; space snuggling (naked, or clothed) after an epic battle means Yuri. That’s just science!

Oh yes. Who knows what could happen in the coming weeks?

Rushdowns no longer work as both the good girls and the baddies are getting smarter.

The majestic glory of space snuggling, especially with pre takeoff longing stares was unleashed at full force in this episode.

    Oh, happy birthday!
Kinda late, but then again I have things that need to be done first before I can connect to internet…
Maybe the YuukixTogo this episode is prepared for your birthday present, who knows?

While a bit rushed, this is a wonderful episode and makes me wonder where they’ll go next…
Based on OP (or part where I feel strange about the OP) I expect there will be one more member in the future and we can have someone to ship with Karin…

    • Overlord-G says:

      Thanks for the birthday greeting.

The term rushed is mainly reserved for climaxes and conclusions of a series. This is episode 5.

      • MarkS00N says:

I guess because I expect it to be a two-three episodes of action piece due to the number of enemies they fight here (and the rushed feeling maybe have something to do with the sudden mankai)…
But I guess they did this for a reason because they did a better pacing in the past four episodes…

      • Overlord-G says:

Yeah I get it. Used to the formulaic norm of how these sentai inspired shows work when something different happens you are thrown off course and use the “rushed” card. I get it.

  9. HyperactiveSkill says:

a~~~re~~ee~~? Episode 5 already and 7 enemies down? wow that’s awesome. maybe we will get some time for happy carefree schoolday without megatacular fighting scene lol. can’t wait for next ep.

What can I say? That battle was spectacular and it definitely was an endgame scenario…except the show just reached the halfway point. Karin worrying about the others was sweet and it looks like she’s finally proud to call herself a member of the Hero Club. They absolutely deserve the happy times that are coming.

But I have to wonder; what side effects will manifest from attaining Mankai?

I finally got around to watching this episode just now and I have to say it’s pretty nicely executed. It’s hard to really get engaged in the battles when the enemies are faceless goons, but I also get the feeling the real battle is yet to come for these girls.

Also, Karin BEST GIRL. I actually thought her VA was Kugimiya Rie, but it turned out to be someone different. Nagatsuma Juri’s a great actress for sure.

It’s one of those “consequences behind the battles”
stuff and the aliens want to destroy the Earth like the millions of other alien invaders. I’m cool with that. Besides the main story revolves around our heroines.

      Karin is cool.
