As a rule, I usually wait until a manga’s main series of chapters comes to an end before I pick it up for a review. However, this next manga will be an exception. The main reason is because the manga’s flow can be picked up quickly and doesn’t need to be read all the way through to enjoy it. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the simple and effective Yuri Manga, Collectors.
Number of chapters: 8 (so far) + some extra chapters. Currently ongoing.
Genres: Non-Moe Art, Comedy, 4-Koma, Romance, Slice of Life, Yuri
Plot Summary: Shinobu (An avid book collector) and her girlfriend Takako (An avid clothes collector), are two 24 year old women who spend most of their time bickering with each other over the obsessiveness of the other woman’s hobby, all the while secretly and deeply loving each other.
Most of the chapters have an identical flow:
1: Takako and Shinobu are either bickering or about to bicker. The bickering usually revolves around one woman not understanding the other woman’s obsession and willingness to spend lots of money over their hobby and criticizing them for it.
2: They eventually make up and sometimes proceed to make love off screen, SOMETIMES.
3: Each chapter concludes with one or both women deep in thought, thinking about the ways they can ponder to maintain their relationship intact. These thoughts revolve around whether one woman really loves the other, how can they make the other woman happier, how can they improve themselves for each other etc. These are short and very empathetic reflections that any person in love surely went through.
4: Occasionally, our leading ladies join up with their two gal pals from college. When the topic of discussion is not about their friends, it’s usually about either Shinobu, Takako or both.
Other interesting tidbits about the manga include:
– A yuri comedy manga can be funny and fluffy without needing to be moe.
-This is a fluffy comedy manga starring 20+ year old young women rather than the usual below 17 age girls that dominate comedies.
-The second reason both girls are dedicated to their hobbies, besides their fascination with their material collections and the pros behind good books and clothes.
If everything that I explained above didn’t make any sense, here’s a shorter version. Imagine an entire manga dedicated to Himawari ( As a bookworm) and Sakurako (As a fashion maniac). For Nation Members who have seen Yuru Yuri, no further explanation is needed. For the few who have not, Collectors is a manga about a lesbian couple who spend a lot of their casual time critiquing each other while secretly loving each other a lot more deep down than what they show outside.
Overall, the above paragraph is more than enough to help people on the fence decide whether they wish to follow this manga to the end or not. It’s short, simple and fun.
