What do you get when you combine Yuru Yuri, Lucky Star, Kill Me Baby!, The 3 Stooges and Seitokai Yakuindomo? You get Yuyushiki.

Plot Summary: Yui, Yukari and Yuzuko are three friends who chill out, doing stuff and coincidentally take over a previously abandoned Data Processing Club.

Basically it’s a show about cute, (initially) ambiguously gay lesbians doing cute things while occasionally Googling stuff at their club. There is not much of a plot besides that but since it’s a Girls Club show, it does not need one.

As I explained in the introduction, the show is a chimera of other Girls Club comedies and one dirty joke centered comedy. It does not excel at one subgenre but rather, combines parts of them into one show. It has the random conversations made famous by past GC shows like Lucky Star. It has Kill Me Baby/Three Stooges slapstick humor and character dynamic, where there is a somewhat levelheaded girl (Yui), a goofball (Yuzu) and an adorable third girl (Yukari). The goofball and adorable girl have fun while the levelheaded girl tries hard to keep up and keeps the other two in check, using force if necessary (especially on Yuzu). It has Seitokai Yakuindomo’s sex joke style of humor in the form of sexual yuri jokes (A personal favorite being “the bean”.). the jokes are mostly mild and harmless compared to those in SY. Lastly, it has Yuru Yuri’s…lesbian goodness. In fact, the show could very well be summed up as Yuru Yuri 2 1/2.

As usual with comedy shows, the jokes are hit and miss. However, if you are someone like myself who does not ask for much to be entertained, you will have a good time and no trouble laughing.

While the animation quality is nothing to write home about, the facial expressions are just too funny and too cute to ignore. The music, on the other hand, is pretty generic and the show’s weak point.

I already described the main trio but there’s also another trio led by girl in love with Yui #1, Aikawa (Ai-chan). Ai-chan’s posse, especially the short haired girl, are also a treat to see in action when they occasionally get screen time in due time. So yeah, no annoying characters on this show…unless you dislike Yuzuko…which would be a bit weird but not impossible.

Now for the important part and main reason for nation members who have not initially picked this up to do so. As the show progresses, the subtext is slowly thrown out the window. You would have to be an ignoramus to not notice the love being spread between these girls for Yui and towards each other. There are even hints of a bigamy, a relatioship status I previously thought only Madoka, Lan and Cherry (Muginami) held. Sadly, no kissing…but there’s definitely canon. Some said they tried too hard with the yuri but as far as I am concerned, the yuri content was just fine.

Overall, Yuyushiki’s a lighthearted and enjoyable Girls Club show that has a little bit of everything that makes lighthearted Slice of Life shows starring a group of girls fun. It is not one of the best but it is certainly an enjoyable one. Here’s hoping for a second season with a kiss or two in it.
