Here’s a fun little list I wanted to post this weekend. See, one of the undeniably powerful impact making moments in all of yuri, next to the “confession”, is the “first kiss”. At least I think so. then I thought about all the great girlXgirl kisses that actually mean something and weren’t added just for fanservice. Believe it or not, there are kiss scenes out there that are consensual and romantic rather than kinky. Having said that, let’s take a look at 12 yurirific kisses that made my heart “squee!” real loud.
As always, this list isn’t from least good to best, only my favorite kissing scenes. Also, spoilers ahead for both old school and modern shows.
Before we begin, I apologize for not finding better Youtube vids of these scenes, so some of them won’t show enough so viewers can see why some of these kisses rock.
#1: Hazuki and Hatsumi from Yamibou episode 13.
DAMN THE ENDING TO HELL! However, if the show were to have ended with this beautiful kiss instead, the controversy wouldn’t be as great as it is for this amusing train wreck of a show.
#2: Nagisa and Shizuma from Strawberry Panic 12. While there are several kisses on the show, there’s no denying this one is the most iconic and logic defying. Yup, a kiss that’s iconic for both its sweetness and ridiculousness. Go figure. Lastly, TAMAO WAS SCREWED!
#3: Utena and Anthy from Adolescence of Utena (Utena: The Movie): Yes, I have seen and enjoyed the movie immensely. No, I have no intention of reviewing it. How can I review something like this? Utena is to old school animeniacs as Paprika (and Inception) are to modern day animeniacs. Couldn’t find a good clip for this one and frankly, it’s for the best because this movie HAS to be seen to be believed. Wow. A legendary member of Shoujoai.com wrote an unbelievable research report on Utena: The Movie and even I can’t believe how much symbolism there is in this movie. No wonder almost nobody talks about Mawaru Penguindrum after it ended.
#4: Hazumu and Tomari from Kashimashi episode 13. I was looking for their first kiss scene because it’s superior to this one, but this will do just fine. Besides, Tomari’s way better than Yasuna anyway.
#5: Chikane and Himeko from Kannazuki no Miko episode 1. Heh. How could I leave these two out of this list. ChiMeko is to anime what Hulk Hogan is to professional wrestling: Immortal legends. There is a silent version of the kiss without the music or Souma screaming but DAMN IT, Souma is a REAL MAN’S MAN! The music and his manliness are what beat out the kiss during the greatest romantic confession in anime history (the finale) by just an itsy bitsy teenie tiny little bit…BARELY! Happy Birthday indeed.
#6: Ascoeur and Q-Feuille from Kiddy-Girl And. I haven’t seen Kiddy Grade yet, so all you fans who label this sequel as blasphemous should sit down. It’s not that bad as some of you make it out to be. It’s inferior to the prequel, but by no means crap. Besides, Dia trumps all your complaints in my book. Anyway, here’s the kiss between our protagonists.
#6: Malga and Margot from Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon episode 10. How else would two seraphic lesbian witches celebrate after a victory against a high class god of war?
#7: Sei and Yumi from Maria-sama ga Miteru. I honestly forgot which season and episode this one is from. It’s been a while since I finished this series. I’ll probably marathon it someday and review all 4 seasons in their entirety. Anyway, this one isn’t on the lips per se, but the message was clear.
#8: Natsuko and Honey from RE: Cutie Honey OVA 3. this may not look like much at first glance but believe me when I say that if you watched the OVA series from the beginning, you’ll agree that this kiss is consensual and not forced.
#9: Any Yume and Yuuki scene in Kanamemo. They’re practically the best characters on the show. As much as fans who have watched this one despise Haruka, you can’t deny the other girls, especially these two, kept you from looking away.
#10: Akane and Mikoto from Kampfer OVA 1. Yes, I know I said I would only show consensual kisses but…just watch the 8-9:30 mark. I rest my case. As much as I dislike Akane, I can;t deny her kiss scenes with Shizuku and Mikoto are her best moments.
#11: The main antagonists of Majikoi. While Majikoi is a mediocre harem show on its own, as soon as these two showed up, it became below average. They’re not exactly evil and are willing to die together for their beliefs.
“Spoiler Alert”, they survive.
#12: Jenny and Lynn from Mouretsu Pirates 17. Of course I’m concluding with a kiss scene from my #1 anime of 2012.
Hmm…should I add a scene from Kuttsukiboshi? Ummmm….nah.

I’ve only seen 4 of the 12 anime you posted on this list, Kannazuki no Miko, Horizon, Strawberry Panic, and Mouretsu Pirates. The kissing scenes that you posted for them are great. I’ve added a few more anime to my watch list now. I really liked Malga and Margot’s kiss because it was simply a sensual kiss after a heated battle, nothing more or less than an expression of love for each other.

what an excellent list of yuri-kiss scenes! I applaud your effort in gathering them all into this one place. As far as any not on this list that I like, I can only think of Simoun and Shoujo Sect off hand. Blue Drop also has an underwater kiss scene similar to Strawberry Panic except that it is completely obscured by bubbles (unfortunately) so it doesn’t quite qualify here.

Oniisama e , which, like Rose of Versailles was written by Riyoko Ikeda and directed by Osamu Dezaki , has also been noted as an inspirational source for several thematic elements and visuals. It appears to be the source for several plot facets, characters and themes such as esoteric elitism within a school setting (the Sorority in Oniisama and the Student Council in Utena), bullying through verbal harassment and slapping, a controlling and deceiving authority, motifs such as that of a tree under which characters sometime meet, problems between friends when one of them is recruited into an elite and exclusive circle (Misonoo and Tomoko’s friendship compared to Utena and Wakaba’s), use of a piece of jewelry to symbolize and control obsessive lesbian feelings (Saint-Just’s gold bracelet represents her passionate feelings for Fukikio while Juri’s gold rose-embossed locket holds her picture/feelings for Shirori), ambiguous incestuous relations, musical pieces having intensely private and sentimental value, and existential themes such as the meaning of life if all people eventually die. Among others, the visual inspirations from Oniisama include architecture, hairstyles, and scenes involving roses such as a scene where petals overflow along with sheets of water from Fukiko’s bathtub in Oniisama e and a scene in the Utena movie where roses and water overflow from an outcropping while Utena and Anthy dance.

You mean Kanamemo, not Kamimemo. Yes, Yamibou’s kiss was special, ending aside. Marimite has many special moments in the first two seasons that involve kisses. the 3rd and 4th, not so much. I hope the last kiss motivated you to check out Mouretsu Pirates.

Yes, sorry. I mispelled. To tell the truth, I haven’t watched most of the anime here, since usually I have trouble finding a yuri/yaoi anime that catters to my tastes and has a plot. Marimite from what I’ve heard is a real slowburner and I’m not sure, if I have the patience to sit down and watch it. About Yamibou and Kannazuki I have heard mixed things (like the rape scene in Kannazuki). Mouretsu Pirates must be good yet I’m not a space opera/action fan, so I can’t promise. Perhaps Neko will like it; I’ll tell him about it.
P.S.: Kanamemo’s yuri couple is cuter than cute dammit! It’s a same that the overall show didn’t get good reviews; otherwise I’d watch for sure.

Let’s see, the Kannazuki anime’s main appeal is the romance between Chikane and Himeko. The rape scene is an important one as it created division within the fanbase as some supported why it was done and others thought there could have been other ways to get the message across. Yamibou…is an acquired taste.
Hmm, I could have sworn you were the patient type and could handle Marimite’s pacing. I guess not.
You’re the second girl I met (online) who ignored Mouretsu Pirates due to it being a sci-fi. I guess girls don’t dig Star Trek.
I don’t know what the fools wanted from Kanamemo. It was a simple slice of life comedy with diverse girls and a lolic- ah, that must be it. They wanted the lolicon to be a guy, or something. I don’t have a positive opinion on the otaku mainstream’s hive mind, you see.

Well, I don’t like a show hitting around the bush for too long (4 seasons are way too long =.=) and I’m not sure if just pure romantic affairs-friendships can keep my interest. Then I still remember Onii-sama e (manga) and uhm… the drama was too much. Generally S-yuri have this secluded environment that takes lesbianism as an experimentation phase; and that ticks me off.
I’ve watched Kaiba, which is sci-fi, too. It’s the battle/mecha aspect that keeps me away. I tried once ep 1 of Macross Frontier and I was @_@ wtf is happening?

Mouretsu Pirates is more about space exploration and ship battles. There are hardly (are there any?) mecha to be seen. Check out my review of it to make sure.

Trust me, I dislike mecha anime as much as you do. While it’s not as deep as shows like Simoun or Haibane Renmei, it’s definitely enjoyable.
Tell you what. When you have free time, give it go. If by the end of the show, you come back to me and tell me MP was not fun in the least, I will not bother you with it.
Ah, Maria-Sama actually gets to the yuri in season 1 in no time, or rather, it gives hints that lead to the big moment. Season 2 also has touching scenes. Seasons 3 and 4 rely on heavy subtext but the yuri is definitely there as well. Here’s another challenge. If by the end of season 1, you do not end up liking Sei or are not interested in the relationship of the other seours, then you do not need to go any further than season 1.

Of course, I’ve already checked the review. You mention some technology/navigation jargon, if I remember correctly. That kinda troubles me, but since you insist so much, I might as well try it when I’m in the mood.
The same goes with Marimite. When I want sth to relax, it could be a good solution. It’s a classic after all and it’s kinda a must watch (yet I always try to find reasons to lessen that huge backlog TT_TT). One question: when you say they get to the yuri, what do you mean exactly? A confession? Implied sex scene?

Well, like I said in the post and review itself, MP’s the anime I enjoyed the most in 2012. However, it’s just an opinion. The sci-fi jargon is for sci-fi nerds but it hardly gets in the way of everything else. It’s there because the show takes place in space and to help Marika with her space pirate captain training.
Ah. Let me rephrase that. The yuri in Marimite is lighthearted in every sense of the word. A kiss (a lip lock or two) here and there, some very touching moments like the clip you saw, but nothing beyond that. Heck, Strawberry Panic level of yuri contact Marimite is not. It is soft, but thankfully not S, despite the show having some content influenced by S media.
I really should review this series…but I just need to pick the right moment to sit down and marathon the whole thing.
