152nd G-View: BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER TV

Hey doods and peeps, welcome to another episode of The G-Views. It’s been a while since I’ve written an anime review and I am long overdue. Also as I stated last week, I’m not going to talk about the final episode but instead post my review. Without further ado, here’s BRS TV.

In case you missed it, here’s my review of the OVA.

37th G-View: Black Rock Shooter

I’ll be making many comparisons to the OVA in this review because the TV anime is basically a retelling. Don’t let that detract your interest in watching the anime if you haven’t seen it yet.

Objectionable content: Intense
Number of episodes: 8
G-Rating: 9/10
Plot Summary: In spring, two girls meet: Mato and Yomi. They each sense something in the other that they lack in themselves, and are drawn to each other in spite of their contrasting personalities. Though initially hesitant, they form a strong connection. But they both have secrets – and in an empty world, two girls fight: Black Rock Shooter and Deadmaster. A strange being, Black Gold Saw, watches their mysterious battle, laughing. This is the story of two girls, in two worlds, entangled by the threads of fate.
So BRS TV, the premise is similar to the OVA’s where there are two dimensions, the Real World and the Other World. Also like the OVA the RW and OW girls are somehow connected to each other. However, that’s where the similarities end. I did say it’s a retelling of the OVA’s plot but its contents have also increased in intensity. It’s ten times more violent, intense, dramatic, psychological and yurific. More on the yuri later.
There are many more fight sequences and the violence in all of them are pretty intense and gory. Just because the blood isn’t red, doesn’t make getting arm ripped off from your body any less disturbing. Suffice to say, they’re bloody and action packed to the max.
The School life segments have been replaced with even more drama. For those who thought the relationship between Mato and Yomi in the OVA was lame, you haven’t seen anything yet. The TV’s drama pretty much goes into melodramatic insanity territory. Simply put, these girls are incredibly unstable and their emotions can be easily manipulated. How intense is the insanity? Kagari nearly made me wet my pants, something that 11 episodes of “Another” failed to accomplish. More on Another next week. No matter how fans who liked the anime feel about the melodrama, like the rest of the show, they can’t deny the fact they (Myself included) have been glued to the PC monitors every Thursday Night for 8 weeks. It’s that thrilling of a roller coaster ride. This show will toy with your emotions throughout its entirety.
There are also symbolic imagery and connections of what happens in the RW affects what happens in the OW. I’m not going into full detail since it’ll be self explanatory when you see it.
The animation is similar to its OVA counterpart, though slightly inferior but not by much. The Other World is still a sight to behold as usual. A Post Apocalyptic-esque Wasteland where Combat is the only rule of survival. I’d also like to note the girls look much cuter here than in the OVA, especially Yomi with her “1000 expressions” ala Hanasaku Iroha’s Ohana. Good stuff all around. I also won’t say much about how the OW girls look because they all look badass, even the new Dead Master. I’ve heard some fans complain about her glasses and headdress… this newYomi wears glasses and the headdress is cute, just like Yomi. They didn’t detract from DM’s awesomeness when she fought. She’s still the fan favorite in spite of the cute additions. Yes, I’ll also admit Black Gold Saw is sexy, just like her real world counterpart.
The music however, felt slightly inferior this time. Sure the OP and ED are pretty good but the Soundtrack sometimes felt out of place. I dunno. I shouldn’t complain too much because it is an emotions centered anime.
I won’t go into full detail on the characters. The Real World girls each have their pros and cons and the viewers will choose for themselves which of the girls is their favorite. Same goes for the Other World warriors.
Excellent drawing by chizzachan. Follow the link for more cool stuff.
With the plug out of the way, let’s talk about what’s most important to The OGMan. This is another one of those shows that tries to hide the fact it’s a yuri anime behind the “friendship” cloak. I can tell you all from experience and visual confirmation that friends, not even best friends are this emotionally attached to one another. It’s impossible for the relationships of the girls on this show to be anything other than romantic. Yomi is clearly in love with Mato, Kagari is obsessed with Yomi and these are only the 1st 3 girls. I won’t spoil the other yuri lovers in this one but those who have seen the show know what I’m talking about.
Lastly let’s talk about hardcore fanboy rage. From my understanding, the fanboys’ main gripe with the show are that they want even more action and nullify the existence of the real world girls. Basically they want an action show centered entirely around the HUGE concept art characters. At least that’s what I understood. My answer to that? So you all want another post-apocalyptic anime. Don’t you have billions of shooting games with that concept already? Also, I’ve seen a PA anime recently and it was 100% serious…it’s mediocre at best. For a PA entertainment medium to work, you need humor. When I look at the HUGE illustrations, the last emotion that crosses my mind is laughter/humor. I can’t picture HUGE’s characters as being funny. I saw it in a manga somewhere and I wasn’t amused. BRS can only work in either an Action, Fighting or RPG. Some would say they would rather see an anime adaptation of the BRS PSP game. Frankly it should stay a game. Having it adapted into an anime series wouldn’t work. I just don’t see it. Besides, I personally think what we did get was pretty creative. It may not be anything new but I sure as heck haven’t anything like this in a while. The fact both the OVA and anime were conceived through Illustrations and a Hatsune Miku song is astounding because as far as I know, there’s no recorded text stating a story from HUGE so there’s no original material to bastardize.
In conclusion: If you’re a fan of the OVA, liked its premise but wanted to see even more of it but with the intensity level set to high, this show shouldn’t be skipped. If you don’t like melodrama or the OVA, check out the 1st two episodes before making up your mind. As for the fanboys…do whatever you want.

  1. One side is a school life while the other is a metaphorical exploration of the pain and drama felt in real life. They did a good job on the OVA and in my opinion even better in the TV series. They had more to work with in 8 episodes so I always expected it to be better.

Well said EC, well said. At least the ending gave the Nation PLENTY to work with. For a show that masquerades itself as not being yuri, it fulfilled our needs quite well.

I was actually about to ask what Yuri Grade you gave Black Rock Shooter TV, then I saw you already updated your list. I completely agree with your ranking and intensity level.

After the emotional roller coaster that is Black Rock Shooter, we have come to the end, and what and end!

A truly excellent series in my opinion! I actually always liked the idea of the Other World being a representation of the drama and emotions of real life. I really enjoyed the OVA, and honestly with the expanded form of the TV series, it was excellent.

While they might not said it is a Yuri series, I honestly feel that the Yuri really is cannon in this show. That is the only way in my mind to explain how everything turned out.

While the end of the series is excellent, I really want a continuation. Either more TV episodes, or maybe an OVA.

Also while at first I wondered why you didn’t do a recap of the last episode, I realized that really, people need to watch it for themselves.

By the way, thank you for recapping, it was entertaining.

By the way, thanks for sharing that excellent art by chizzachan! Heh, love Yomi’s expression. It reminds me of OVA Deadmaster.

I mainly review shows as a whole. I’m not sure whether I’ll continue doing so in the Spring season or not. I didn’t discuss the finale because it’s better left to the viewer to find out for themselves how the show ends, good or bad. I may give off hints on how it turned out but not often.

Anyway, for your viewing pleasure, here are the epilogues:
-Mato and Yomi are 100% at least
-Kagari may challenge Mato for Yomi
-Hopefully Saya read “Pure Water Adolescence” so she’ll know what to do with Yuu.
-Sadly Strength can’t be together with Saya…unless Saya merges with BGS and has a secret affair with Strength in the Other World.
-Kaho will probably apologize to the guy so whatever.

Our dream orgy did take place off screen but it looks like it didn’t happen between the Other World Techno Babes but the Real World Bloomers.

I dunno, that’s my fantasy at least.

Please pardon my language due to the joygasmic Rainbow Cannon: “TASTE THE RAINBOW MUTHERFUCKER!” That was pure awesomeness.

Oh hey I know Chizza Chan xD

Finally the BRS Anime is done~ With an awesome start, an Epic battle and a so very very sad ending ;A; (Curses i still want Mato and Yomi together.. But at least there was a fluff moment =w= )

I wonder if there would be any season 2?

The Strength portion of the ending was sad but everything worked out fine in the end so no harm done. Like I said in other comments here, everything worked out in our favor so it’s up to us to fill in the blanks and create wonderful memories for our heroines in love.

So I was not the only person who thought “TASTE THE RAINBOW!!” when Mato brought out the Wave Motion Rainbow Rock Cannon. ^_^

I think Yomi is going to end up with a harem actually and I don’t think Mato will mind one bit.

Strength X Black Gold Saw, definitely. Hell maybe even now Strength X Black Rock Shooter.

You could make the argument that now all the Other Selves are in love with each other due to their hearts now being connected.

I believe that Yuu is now officially living with Saya-chan. I wonder with what last name Yuu was introduced to the class with?

I have a theory, which I already posted on SA, that since we have seen both travel between worlds, and both people and their other selves coexist and touch in the same world, Strength is not cut off from the real world. If she wished too, I think she might just be able to return to the real world, actually maybe any of the other selves can.

Personally I enjoyed your experiment in recapping episodes and so I hope you can continue if there is a series you want to recap and you have time to do it.

All of those possibilities and more are now in the hands of the nation to cook up tons of Cracker Jack Stories in the future.

Nah, Kagari and Mato are the only ones who want Yomi. Saya already has Yuu and Strength so it’s a divided twin triangle if you ask me. But whatever, all’s well that ends well.

What can I say? Great series, awesome ending. The only thing… where’s the kiss between Yomi and Mato!! T_T
The mega-yuri-cannon in the end make me think… “MASTER SPARK” in the face!! Talk about overkill. Marisa would be proud!!

Now that this series is over, they can give us a continuation of the OVA!! Give me more BRS!!

Heh, well we all know what happened off screen. ^_^

Hmm, to me Mato’s Yuri Wave Motion Cannon finishing move makes me think of two words: “STARLIGHT BREAKER!”

Also when you are trying to get your feelings across, in this case Mato’s love for BRS, there is no kill like over kill! ^_^

We need more Black Rock Shooter Period. Though you are right, we need a continuation of the OVA series, I want to see what happens to OVA-verse Yuu. Will her depression over Mato becoming closer to Yomi cause her to switch places with Strength in that verse too?

The writers can go in one of 3 directions.
-Make the hardcore fanboys orgasm by making a generic action anime taking place in a post apocalyptic world like so many others this day and age.
        -Continue the OVA or anime.
-A spinoff starring other HUGE illustration girls.

Just finished watching this. WOW. It was amazing. All those tear-jerking moments and the amazing fight scenes. 8 episodes are NOT enough. Are there no sequels or anything? I need more of this.

There’s the prequel-ish OVA and a PSP video game that tells a different story than both the anime and OVA. There’s also a manga that tells a different story.

I can’t believe that I went so long without watching this anime… I even own a shirt with BRS in the front… I watched the OVA yesterday and now I’m watching first ep on the TV series… I did like Yomi before, I must confess the glasses on her don’t do it for me, I also liked her more stern..but oh well, the story seems to make up for it… Kagari…yes, I LOVED Another, but this girl… Gee…creepy as hell.

And i’m not even done with the episode haha, will be soon… Anyhow, thanks for the review, I am so gonna finish it quickly I looove it already, gonna go to my top ten anime. 🙂 Also the song is the first one I’ve heard by Miku. I have seen her before of course, but I’m not into vocaloid stuff.

You liking Yomi without glasses is subjective but whatever. More power to you.

Good to know you liked both the shows and part of the anime.

Yes there are times the show can get as creepy as Another.

      The OP’s really good.

Yes of course it’s subjective, I guess I just like characters who are more…expressionless, my bad for watching the OVA first, but nonetheless the story is awesome..it kind of reminds me of Sucker Punch, the whole thing…when I’m done I shall understand, I hope.

Thanks for writing such a good review, got me interested right away.
