OG’s Top 10 factors that influence which anime are keepers

What the title refers to is how I choose my anime. What factors determine how I pick which shows/movies I’m going to watch. I thought I’d share some of them with you all. So let’s not waste any more time, here we go!

#1: Yuri Potential. You all knew this one was the most important of all. I am and always will be a member of the Yuri Nation first and foremost. I’ll put any anime that has a high potential of subtext/canon yuri content as top priority. Everything else is reserved for either after they ended or when I feel like it. Whether a show will deliver in terms of quality isn’t the case. The fact that the show triggers the nation’s vibes is more than enough to intrigue me. Being rewarded with canon is what we always hope for but for the time being, we’ll take what we can get.

#2: SHAFT. If it’s an anime published/produced by SHAFT, I will most likely watch it. Hetero harem shows,,,I will intentionally delay.

#3: Titles

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

[C]: The Money and Soul of Possibility

Tiger & Bunny

Kill Me Baby, Baby, Please Kill Me!

Have you noticed a pattern yet? Basically the longer/weirder the name, the more I’m interested.

#4: Girls, girls, girls. The less men on the show with important roles or any at all, the better.

#5: Favorite Genres. Slice of Life, Mindless Comedy, yuri, Horror/Suspense/Thriller, Sci-Fi.

#6: PAIN! When I feel I’ve given far too many positive reviews, I’ll seek something so painful, so horrendous, so nail bitingly bad, it’ll make me hate humanity for an entire day.

So much hate, soooo….much…HAAAAAAAAAATE!

“Pant…pant…pant…pant.” Moving on. I need a Corn muffin.

#7: Omega-Kawaii…do I really need to say anything else?

#8: Backlash. Shows that are good and I’ll most like appreciate, that have been bashed for (usually) petty reasons.

#9: Male lead torture. Physical, mental, psychological, low blows to a male anime character’s masculine integrity: All of this must be implemented in a creative manner that won’t get old.

#10: Badass female protagonists. This may sound similar to #5 but the difference here is that it applies to shows where the female lead is mainly known for kicking ass above all else. Female leads in #5 are not always badass.

Well, there you go. Later doods.

Wow, it’s great to have a very precise awareness of one’s tastes. Saves the blogger the pain of watching crap, and the readers the pain of hearing him or her whine afterwards.

  2. hippiefreak says:

    Small list
    1. Badass main lead (preferably male. If harem, at least make him NOT a pussy)
    2. Decent plotline
    3. Decent female lead/sides (preferabley not tsundere+flatchest+rie kugimiya combo, but will be averted if series provides enough likeable alternatives)
    4. A balance between crazy/funny/serious

  3. Stevie Nix says:

That was a rather informative post on your anime choosing method. I guess I don’t have nearly a detailed method, mainly just does it sound good and/or is there Yuri in it?

    A couple side questions.

    1. Who are the two girls in the picture you posted just above #2? They look a lot like Mokou and Kaguya from Touhou project.

    2. So do you wish Murder Princess ran longer?

    • Overlord-G says:

1: The two girls Kaja Bergmann and Sayoko Arashiyama from Natsu no Arashi.
2: Alita and Falis should have made love at least once on the show. Does that answer your question?

      • Stevie Nix says:

So is Natsu no Arashi any good by the way?

As for Alita and Falis, yes that does. Related to that:

        Manga spoiler
In the second to last chapter of the manga Alita wanted to sleep with Falis due to her unease facing her possessed brother (the plot of the manga was rather different the anime).

Thanks for answering my questions and I’m looking forward to more interesting reviews.

    • Overlord-G says:

Expect a review of the show soon. I don’t know when but it’s on my schedule.

Spill the beans Sir Steven: Do they, or don’t they?

      • Stevie Nix says:

Unfortunately its left up to the reader’s imagination. But I have a feeling Alita wasn’t denied her wish for some reassuring love in Falis’s arms. Also I was wrong it was the second to last chapter, it was about three chapters before hand. Another thing I forgot, Alita’s request came after she and Falis basically decided they will be together forever since they share the same fate.

    • Overlord-G says:

Alrighty. It’s pretty much as acceptable of a yurirific ending as El Cazador de la Bruja’s. Yup, they made love. end of story. time to pick up the manga and listen to the epic OP of the anime. Seriously it rocked so hard. You can pretty much find most reviews of your fav yuri shows here. Just don’t expect many pictures. I’ll take care of those later.

  4. hoshiko says:

Lol, the longer/weirder the name, the more interested you are huh? That’s the first I heard but valid.

After reading your list, one thing’s for sure. We’ll get to see loads of interesting anime post coming from ya.

    • Overlord-G says:

That’s right. Japanese have the weirdest titles for their shows so I get intrigued by those that are very long or very weird.

I’m already finished with most of the posts for shows I’m following right now. I’m waiting for the 2nd episodes of Another and Macho Nichijou. I also have to write about Milky Holmes’ 2 episodes.

  5. feal87 says:

I’ll be honest here, girls and visual style at the first thing I look before watching a series…:P

    • Overlord-G says:

Visual style isn’t really important to me. As for girls, the amount, the entertainment quality (not the sexual kind) and their integrity are key. The more feal87’ey they are, the less I’m interested.

  6. Rei says:

I’m not really interested in the girl but yeah it is a good addition to the show.
For me as long as the storyline is good i’ll watch it. But yeah SHAFT anime production is a must watch. As long as the animation doesn’t suck i’m up for it. Omega kawaii like Yune is a must as well, i like everything being cute. The longer the title lol! I don’t know but yeah it is interesting when an anime has a very long one.

  7. Elizabeth says:

Do you mind if I ask why you wouldn’t watch Maria Holic?
