Hey doods and peeps, welcome to another episode of the G-Views. This time we’re taking a look at a classic comedy from the mid 2000’s that follows basic formulas, yet manages to pull it off pretty well. This is Ninja Nonsense, better known as 2×2=Shinobuden.
Number of episodes: 12
Plot Summary: Shinobu is a naive ninja-in-training. In order to test her ninja abilites, she must steal the panties of all the high school girls. The first house she stops at is the abode of one Kaede Shiranui, who happens to catch Shinobu in the act. Kaeda is the voice of reason and the two girls become quick friends, despite a round yellow ball-thing who claims to be a ninja master and tries to get in the way of their friendship.
That pretty much sums up the gist of the show’s premise. After the 1st episode, Shinobu often invites Kaede to the ninja temple where Onsokumaru and the many ninja look-a-likes with different names but only one, Sasuke, is actually relevant, mess around with both Shinobu and Kaede in often perverse ways. Sometimes even the ninjas disagree with how far Onsokumaru’s schemes get. Sometimes other characters appear like Shinobu’s younger sister Miyabi who is more than capable of holding her own against Onsokumaru schemes to humiliate her because she refuses to succumb to him. Beyond that, there isn’t much else to the show. the opening is one of a few examples of anime that use “false openings”, meaning that certain events that occur during the intro never actually take place in the show, particularly Shinobu’s duel with her dark double. In fact there are no action scenes to speak of.
Although it sounds like I’m making the show seem worse than it actually is, believe me it isn’t. It’s a harmless comedy with decent fanservice for both males and females (If you like seeing ripped dudes with identical ninja masks pose while wearing briefs, and Onsokumaru’s buff transformation). There are also parodies from other shows. See how many you can recognize? On a personal note: Why do shows like to mock Maria-sama ga Miteru? What harm did that show do to anybody? Seriously. Oh well, I did laugh out loud when Onsokumaru’s seiyuu voiced over the Yumi and Sachiko ripoffs.
Animation: Aside from the girls looking cute, bubbly and some girls except Miyabi being decently attractive, the show’s setting, scenery and everything else is forgettable. It gets the job done is all I’m saying. Not impressive but it doesn’t need to be.
Music: While the animation isn’t anything to write home about, the music more than makes up for it. the OP rocks, the ending’s catchy and the OST is also memorable imo.
Shinobu (Black hair): She is kind, hardworking, and dedicated, but naive and somewhat clumsy with complex tasks. She is usually charged with taking care of her dojo
, because everyone else is too lazy. She usually wears a purple and pink ninja outfit, but sometimes wears other costumes. Her ambiguous relationship with Kaede, ranges from admiration and idolization to romantic interest. Despite the influence of Onsokumaru, she remains fairly innocent.
Kaede (Blonde Girl): Better known as Shinobu’s “More than a friend but less than a lover”, is a schoolgirl about Shinobu’s age. She is the most sensible character of the series and thus usually the most put-upon. However, she does not allow herself to be tormented and usually puts annoying people in their place. She is often shown making remarks about how Onsokumaru and the male ninja are annoying.
Pretty much sums up her character. She kind of realizes how Shinobu feels about her eventually and slowly seems to slowly reciprocate her feelings.
Miyabi (Green haired girl): Miyabi is Shinobu’s younger sister who has chosen the field of “magical summoning” rather than ninjutsu
. She dislikes Onsokumaru (a mutual feeling) and believes that her elder sister should switch fields and become a magical summoner like herself. Though just ten-years-old, she is something of a prodigy and is skilled enough to consistently defeat Onsokumaru when he gets on her nerves.
For some reason I find her even more adorable than Shinobu. I think it’s because of her seiyuu…”checks who it is”…oh, it’s Rie Kugimiya. that explains it.
Onsokumaru, or as I like to call him, Pac-Man’s distant cousin he doesn’t like to talk about: Is a shape-changing creature; his name roughly translates to “sonic speed ball”. He is usually depicted as a round, yellow sphere with a face, variably with wings or arms, deep voice, and a loud temperament. Often, when getting emotional, he will transform into an extremely muscular full human body. In spite of being such a bizarre creature, he is the leader of Shinobu’s ninja clan. Onsokumaru is perverted
, lecherous, messy, loud, a cheat, and greedy. He imagines softcore-pornographic fantasies about Shinobu and Kaede, either for his own personal pleasure or to enthrall or persuade the male ninja into helping him. On the other hand, he is often friendly, and has a silly, playful side.
What I like most about this blob of goo is not only his excellent seiyuu, Norio Wakamoto, but also the fact that whenever he transforms into buff mode, he reminds me of the protagonists of the epic fail, seizure inducing, head scratching Sonic the Hedgehog ripoff “Mohawk and Headphone Jack”.
Sasuke: Sasuke is the class president of the Ninja Academy. Sasuke is sometimes easy to spot, but he is one of the dozens of faceless male ninja in the series. These male ninja are seen in different outfits, but never without their masks. Onsokumaru and Shinobu seem able to tell them apart. They share many of Onsokumaru’s traits, although they are more kindhearted and conscientious, attempting to act noble and wise. They often join in on Onsokumaru’s perverted schemes, but have shown a distaste for certain levels he will go to. The ninja have even more than once joined together to punish Onsokumaru when he goes too far. They have a tendency to act with a hive mind
, but are easily distracted and get little done.
In conclusion: Extremely hilarious fluff. Plain and simple. It doesn’t hurt to give this a go and it’s even approved by one of my most respected “Nation members”. If it isn’t your thing, it’s alright.
