Yukkuri Panic: Escalation

Greetings gamers young and old (Mostly old for this review) welcome to the 2nd episode of the GGE. Sorry for the lack of updates in this section of the blog but even though I am an avid gamer, reviewing them isn’t exactly one of my strong points. However, I will do my best to review the following eroge’s ADV version. Why only the ADV and not Panic Mode? Because I can’t get Panic mode on my PC at the moment. My apologies, but I will try to get it to work on my other laptop in October. For now, check this Youtube vid for a preview of what Panic Mode is like.

Anyway, it looks fun and hopefully I’ll eventually get it to work. Now on to the ADV.

Rating: Meh

Plot Summary: Rie Komatsuzaki has just transferred to the prestigious St. Yale Academy, a Catholic school for girls, and she’s sad and confused. She had fallen in love with her home tutor then discovered that her stepmother was involved in an illicit relationship with him. Now at her new school, she finds herself alone and confused. On a whim, she enters the school chapel, where she encounters Naomi and Midori making love. She’s immediately taken aback — “What are they doing? Girls aren’t supposed to touch each other like that!” And yet, a strange warmth fills Rie, and her panties grow wet. Which piece of pie do you want to take a bite out of? Will it be either the classic and mysterious onee-sama whose body is unnaturally shaped like an hourglass, or the spiteful chick whose voice actress is trying to do her best imitation of an English Dubbed H voice actress?

There are 4 endings in total, 1 bad, 2 vintage H endings and one true ending that tries to be too melodramatic for its own good but it’s not so bad. To be honest, the true route was supposed to be the most interesting where you could somewhat feel empathy for the girls involved but the way it’s told and the actions the girls take or have taken, end up making the whole thing an unnecessary mess. As for the vintage H endings…well you can tell just by looking at the main pic as to what kind of route players can expect those endings will take. Having said that, they still act weird weird despite how predictable the 2 endings are, even in the true ending.

Animation: In the dialogue boxes, the best drawn character is Rie. Naomi, Midori and Sister have issues with their appearance, especially Naomi. However, the CG pics are very well done and the scenery isn’t that bad either, especially a certain dark place.

Music: Classical music all around. It’s pretty much a tradition by now to associate yuri with classical music and since I like both, let it remain so. I don’t think you’ll need to turn the music off for this one.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward VN or Dating Sim fare:During the course of the game, Rie will be given two possible answers that affect the story’s progression. That’s pretty much it. From my personal experience, the game feels much shorter than a Sono Hanabira game. Either that or I enjoy SH games so much that I take my time with them, thus giving a feeling that said games are longer than they actually are.

Rie Komatsuzaki

Newly transferred to St. Yale Academy, Rie is a girl who is sad and confused after learning the truth about her stepmother’s affair with her first love. Broken hearted, she transferred to the prestigious Catholic girls’ school to forget herself. Age 18. (She somewhat reminds me of an aloof and sadder Nagisa from Strawberry Panic. Oh and she also makes me think about eating cherries.)

Midori Omamori

A girl in Rie’s class who is mischivious, Midori is the lover of Naomi. When Rie accidentally spies Midori and Naormi making love in the school chapel, she gets back at her by turning the girl into her personal plaything. Age 18. (I don’t like this kid that much but there IS one thing she does that makes me respect her…somewhat.)

Naomi Hayakawa

Known as the “Madonna of the School,” Naomi is beloved by all the other girls in the school. When Rie spies her playing with Midori in the chapel, her attentions turn to the new arrival at the school. She carries a deep secret inside her. Age 19. (As far as Onee-samas go, you cannot be any more stereotypical than Naomi)

The head nun at the school, Sister is also the teacher of Rie and Midori. A woman with a pure heart on the surface, she also bears a secret she can never tell to another. Age 39. (I think were trying way too hard with this woman.)

In conclusion: It’s okay at best but nothing special. It isn’t one of the best yuri VNs or eroge I’ve played but I’ve seen worse…believe me.

Eh, this is a very mediocre visual novel I thought. Not especially engaging, and I didn’t come out feeling good or anything. Art is pretty nice though, which is always a plus.

I thought the story for the Panic mode is actually better than some of the endings in ADV, but still not as good.
