78th G-View: Tantei Opera Milky Holmes

Hello and welcome to G-Views, where SoL reigns supreme, moe is respected and Dokuro-chan sucks poopie. What do you get when you combine Sherlock Holmes, lolis, breasts used as flotation devices and Looney Tunes? Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, that’s what.

Genres: comedy
Themes: ecchi, superpowers
Number of episodes: 12
G-Rating: 7/10

Plot Summary: In the future world, people use ‘Toys’ that grant them superhuman abilities like ESP and telekinesis. This has led to a boom in both minor crimes and the need for Toy-using detectives to track down the offenders and bring them to justice. Opera Koyabashi runs the detective agency, Milky Holmes, staffed by four cheerful and energetic girls.

So basically this is an ecchi comedy about 4 top notch detectives who for some reason, lost their superpowers (toys) and became obsolete. In short, it’s a a story about the best of the best starting over and becoming the worst of the worst in their profession. No joke. All four become pretty much dumb and useless after losing their powers, which kind of saddens me because it makes them appear to ONLY have obtained their fame and glory because of their toys and not by their own human abilities.
I’m guessing that the moral of the show is that you have to remember is that success is not just about supernatural abilities and the dependence on them, but your own human talents. When the show isn’t busy being silly, it kind of focuses on the girls and their determination to get their powers back at any cost, even their humility and sense of intelligence. I found it weird that the minute the girls lost their powers they became bumbling idiots who are treated like crap by everyone. They are supposed to be detectives so shouldn’t they have some sort of intelligence? Also I found it annoying at times how they would constantly go on and on about getting their toys back rather than realizing that they relied on them too much and to be a great detective, you need cunning, intelligence and ingenuity. They always tried to get their toys back rather than work on their other traits.

Kokoro chan (Blond girl) I want to CASTRATE YOU! the other 3 are cool.

As a whole, this show is pretty stupid, in a good way. It’s cheesy, nonsensical, light hearted and good old fashioned fun with fanservice thrown in. It’s not meant to be taken seriously and just like the Looney Tunes, the episodes are simply meant to be seen without much thought and have a good time while watching them. That’s why I have a soft spot for this show, even though I know all too well that it’s far from being a work of art.

Since the girls are descendants of legendary detectives and crime solvers, you would think that there is actual mystery solving involved in the show right? Not really. There IS some investigating that takes place but nothing near the lines of Detective Conan or Ghost Hunt. Like I said, don’t take this show seriously.

As surprising as what I’m about to say is, there is actually some action that takes place on the show and for what little there is, it’s actually pretty neat to watch. Keep in mind that combat doesn’t happen quite often but it does once n  a while.
The animation is colorful and cute. It reminds me of Shuffle for some reason. Maybe it’s the green haired girl from the “police force” (I strongly put emphasis behind police force because I question that.)

The music’s okay, but nothing memorable as far as I’m concerned.
As for the comedy aspect of the show, it’s mostly slapstick and ecchi. The jokes are hit and miss and the characters are often physically hurt for laughs and because they act silly. Also, one of the male characters on the show scares me. He’s both funny and incredibly freaky. He pretty much epitomizes self adoration, to possibly downright romanticism toward oneself.
The main characters are all lovable in their own ways, even though their intelligence and common senses are often questioned.
The character, whom I especially enjoyed, aside from Cordelia, is the main “villain” of the show, Arsene. I don’t know what it is about her (No, it’s not her sexy body), it’s probably the main reason behind her actions. Once they become clear, I realized that she was my favorite character all along. You have to watch the show and see for yourself what I mean by this, because I can’t exactly convey in words why I like Arsene most of all. Okay, I admit she so FIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNE!

In conclusion, this show’s okay and mostly meant to relax and empty your mind of all worries in life and watch people acting silly and get beat up a lot or bumping into breasts that also function as flotation devices. Seriously, those jugs could probably save many lives. Check it out when you have nothing better to watch.

P.S.: Seriously, our heroines’ clothing makes them look more like they’re descendants of Elmer Fudd rather than legendary detectives. Also, the reason why they lost their powers all of a sudden? Never explained, but if you stop and think about it for a bit while watching the show, it doesn’t need to be explained because the answer is easy to figure out.
