57th G-View: High School of the Dead

Hello and welcome to G-Views, where SoL reigns supreme, moe is respected and Dokuro-chan sucks poopie. What do you get when you mix a zombie apocalypse storyline with a basic ecchi anime school setting, why HotD of course. Yeah, I’ve got nothing clever to say about this one, then again, cleverness can be found in this show, you just have to look carefully. anyway, on with the review.

Genres: action, drama, horror, romance, thriller
Themes: fanservice, Gore, zombies
Number of episodes: 13+1 OVA, for now.
G-Rating: 7/10

Objectionable content: Intense (graphic depictions of sex, drug use, or bloodshed) I can only imagine how intense the uncensored version will be.

Plot Summary: Takashi Komuro is a normal highschool boy, until an infection breaks out that turns people into zombie-like creatures. Along with his friends & the school nurse, they fight their way out and continue their journey to find out what exactly has happened to the world.
I haven’t read the manga so I can’t say much about it. As for the anime version, it’s exactly what I expected from the get go, zombies and breasts. The show didn’t disappoint because that’s exactly what we got.

Music: Great OP and multiple EDs. In short, awesome selection of rock and roll themes mixed with some J-Pop and soft music every once in a while.

Animation: to me it’s your typical hot chicks with big boobs craze. choose for yourself which one is your favorite. As for the zombies, very well drawn and scary enough in my book. As long as they behave like normal zombies, I’m happy. The males, they’re okay too.

The main reason why I stuck around instead of giving this show a pass is because of two characters: Kohta Hirano and Saya Takagi. If it weren’t for these two, this show would be less good than it is. Seriously, these two characters are the ones who entertain me the most.
Takashi and Rei are too generic for me to care about, while Saeko is a badass, except for the fact that she’s basically another member of Takashi’s harem. Other than that, she’s cool too.
Another cool aspect of this show is that it follows your basic Zombie Apocalypse setting very well. It has all your classic formulas to make it work:
-Basic slow moving zombies who are killed by mutilation or headshots.
-People losing their minds and all form of rational thought, leading to Armageddon.
-Crazy people who use the chaos to accomplish their own goals.
-The main hero team being the only people on the planet who are kind of in control of their sanity for the time being.

Sure, the fanservice level is high, but to me this is basically a pretty satisfying zombie flick. Nothing more, nothing less. I’m guessing the manga’s better than the anime. Then again, it’s been confirmed by the majority of animeniacs that manga are usually better than their anime counterparts…usually.

In conclusion: I highly recommend this one to all male fans of Zombie movies and ecchiness. As for girls….it all depends on how strong your training or skills in anti-ecchi jutsu are. This is really an anime made specifically for guys, but if I spot a girl or two who likes this show as well, I will give them a big huggy.

Oh, and this anime is obviously another “Manga Lure”.

If you like fan service type of anime this is definitely the anime to watch.
The anime was alright, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good as well. I guess it is average.
The best character for me would be the teacher with the big boobs. Damn, she is awesome!

She would have been more awesome if she got together with her commando hottie girlfriend, sadly that was never shown on screen. POOPIE! Other than that, it’s an okay show that’s for sure.

Would you say that this anime is worth watching if I’m not all that interested in the primary zombie aspect (ie watching it for the yuri / human character interaction)? And if so, could I trouble you to point me to the episodes where the yuri’s more prominently featured? Thank you for your time in advance.

If you’re ONLY looking for the yuri, then the bonus OVA is the only thing you need to watch. There are minor subtext moments thrown in the middle of the anime but they’re scarce.

You absolutely sure? I only ask because I’ve seen .gifs passing around of a steamy, touchy-feely, just-short-of-sex scene in what looks like a shower, which supposedly occurs in the sixth episode. I don’t know whether the source is mistaken on the origin or not.

Oh, that. Yeah, there’s an episode where everyone’s at an apartment and ecchi stuff happens. Again, too short of a scene for me to remember.
